Half-Life is not a good example of well done hard difficulty. As the link above shows, enemies have anywhere between 50% and 100% more health compared to normal. The funniest is the Bullsquid whose health triples. The HP can be quite easily modded though, so that you get hard damage and AI but with normal enemy HP.

Here is a Half-Life mod that is a work of pure imagination and spirit. I really loved the visuals. This mod is very underrated, and I highly recommend it. 12 minutes well spent. One of the comments on moddb says that the creator later went on to develop TF2, but I can't find anything corroborating this.

edit: Yup, it's legit. Made by Cayle George, who would later go on to develop Team Fortress 2 and Portal 2.

I don't think I've ever encountered a bigger bullet sponge in all of video gaming than the final boss of They Hunger (on hard mode, anyway). I was good at conserving my ammo, and was very careful to aim squarely for his head. Eventually, I completely exhausted my ammo supply, so it was either cheat or go back a fair bit. After everything I pumped into his skull before cheating, he still wasn't anywhere close to being dead. I think this is probably the first first-person shooter I've ever beaten by resorting to cheats. The guy who wrote the gamefaqs guide couldn't beat him, either.

The devs also felt he was bullet-spongy and had released a patch to reduce his health, attached to the end of this FAQ. Sadly, it was a Fileplanet link and is now gone to the ether.

I watched a playthrough of the Sven Coop version of They Hunger and it looked pretty neat. Some of the weapons were changed to fit a 50s era, like a 1911 instead of the HL Glock with Beretta textures smeared over it.

Man, now I'm reminded of another HL zombie mod that came out a little while after They Hunger. Heart of Evil was a parody of Apocalypse Now with you fighting off zombies and Viet Cong and Kurtz' men. You also had to escort a Barney around the levels to have him do stuff that apparently you can't. The mod leans a bit onto Resident Evil with reading letters and notes for exposition and clues, and picking up key objects to unlock passageways (though you don't have to manage an inventory). I got to a part where I was tasked to help clean out a firebase that had a lot of friendly forces, but I died instantly from full health and armor during an ambush at a hangar.

There was a redux of Heart of Evil called Napalm, and while it did look nicer I didn't like the fact that zombies revived themselves after taking a shitton of bullets. Only explosives killed them outright a la Quake and there wasn't much at the beginning other than those damn tripmines from HL.

Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy and ZULA.

Seriously, more people should try out Keen because it's relatively unknown but is among the best classic PC platformers!

ZULA is a pretty good online FPS game, similar to Team Fortress 2 but without the classes, and sadly the weapons only stay in your inventory for as long as you pay for them (in game money though), but otherwise it's very solid.

I was playing through the Saints Row series on my Xbox One late last year but i've recently stalled on SR 3 due to my current neck issues (disc degeneration/nerve issues). I used to sit on my bed & lean back against my wall & watch TV/game every night so i guess that gave me bad posture as well as hurt my neck. Now i sit straight up in a chair at a desk & use my computer.

You'd think that sitting at a desk all day would actually be bad for you as well (which it is over time) but what i was doing was worse for me, especially at my age. But the good news is that i get to play Doom more as well as use my PC that i built some years ago.

Alright, back to Saints Row: I played 1 & 2 on my XB1 & i really liked them. I had already played the first one years ago & i had started #2 but never actually finished it before. So i just decided to restart them all. I blew through the first one & took my time with the second. I really liked the story and the "hood"/gang aspect. Number 3 is quite different though & so far i don't like it as much The driving is vastly improved as well as the shooting but the missions & interactivity (you can't pickup objects on the ground anymore & use them as weapons) are lacking. So in a way its a move forward as well as backwards.

I still plan on finishing it at some point & then playing SR4 as well as "Gat Out Of Hell". I heard those ones have an even less serious story but even more insane game-play. If i don't finish SR3 on XB1, maybe i'll catch it on sale on Steam/GOG & play it on PC instead as i hear that one actually runs decent (unlike SR2).

I beat Ecco: The Tides of Time in three sittings, with the help of a walkthrough as various parts of the game are very unintuitive. Overall feelings are mixed, as the sense of increasing strangeness and splendour that the original had has already been spent, so even with newer, stranger environments and new mechanics, it felt less impressive. I felt like my timing was being tested a bit more often this time around, whilst the last game my overriding memory is of having to master the jump mechanics instead. There's still bits where you've got to get the angles right to leap across clear space between tunnels and whatnot, particularly in the "Lunar Bay" levels, but there's more scrolling sections, and bits where you have to chase another dolphin or whale through a level to get to something they'll unlock, plus the Space Harrier style faux-3D teleport sections. The addition of sections where you transform into another species were pretty cool, even though they often made navigation harder and frequently showcased how well animated the dolphins are compared to literally everything else. Being so used to a character that has at least 8 rotations with plenty of frames of animation for various actions and then playing something that either faces left or right and does less whilst moving and attacking was a touch underwhelming.

I've now moved on to Turok, on the Xbox 360. The graphics are showing their 10 years of age now, and the control scheme seems off after do long playing with CoD style controls, but I like the dual-wielding mechanic. I feel like the generic sci-fi military plot and setting is a bit weak compared to the previous games I've seen and played, but it's serviceable so far.

I do think the HP increments serve more purpose than to prolong fights: Particularly in the way of incentivising head shots.

I've always felt half life was unfairly judged for its enemy time to kill, if you are good at hitting them in teh right plave you can blow through encounters as quickly as you can in any other fast-paced shooter. I'd even go as two say that HL monsters on hard are less "spongey" than Doom's are, the time to kill the strongest non-bosses in that game (alien grunt, controller) with low level wepaons (pistol, shotgun) is comparable or even faster than the time it takes to kill a moderate Doom enemy (ex: caco, revenant) with similar basically weaponeds (pump shotgun, chaingun).

in HL is even a hitscan weapon that can 1-hit kill kill anything in the game, who isn't a boss, with its secondary fire (the guass cannon)

if you want to see some real damage sponges, play unreal on max difficulty. the skaarj warriors are insayne (**** the spelling lol) x_x

that besides,, i do think that the combat in HLs beginning sections are really slow, but i lay the blame more on the level layout than the enemy/weapon design

To be honest I hardly noticed these monster health changes. didn't take so long to kill any of them assuming you use the proper weapon and hit the right spot.

I never had a problem with Unreal's higher difficulties, I think because of how the combat flows. Instead of fighting against an entire squad of hitscanners, you're dealing with no more than one or two skaarj, enemies that pretty much always carry projectile-based weaponry. The fact that they can also dodge your attacks and lead their shots makes them feel like a legitimate threat, as you can't just circle-strafe around them in eternal safety.

To me, Unreal's high difficulties pose the question of "Are you good enough to fight for longer without making a mistake?" as opposed to "KILL THE HITSCANNERS! KILL THEM NOW!". And yeah, I'm complaining about the HECU specifically, I don't have a problem with the rest of HL's roster.

A complete disgrace to the series, and I thought Evolution was bad.

Morrowind has been taking almost all of my time lately. The amount of stuff you can do on it is... ridiculous. I want to explore all of Vivec (which I fucking hate BTW, goddamn copy-pasted fatigue-killer maze) and I specially want to find the Propylon Index in St. Olms so I can give it to a character that wants to build a teleporter. After that I need to go to Ebonheart and give a letter to some guy (a letter I've been keeping for like 3 months lol), after that I need to visit Mournhold and kill a goblin army (I left the place because I found a Daedric Wakizashi and my short blade skill sucked. Funny thing is, I found a Daedric Katana later, and since I'm very good with long blades it made the diversion kinda pointless), a quest I got after getting the Dark Brotherhood off my back (they tried to kill me on my sleep, what kind of asshole does that? Jeez). After I'm done in Mournhold, I need to go back to Seyda Neen to do three quest that I overlooked at the start of the game, then I need to recover some gold from a girl by orders of the Fighters Guild, but the girl was actually a relative of the guy who had the gold, and now the guy is dead so I need to go find him. Also, I once came across a woman that had fallen in love with a rogue that had robbed her and she wanted to contact him, so I helped her because I'm a good person. She later told me to find her friend because I might get along with her. Oh yeah, some guy also wanted me to find his downed plane and some ancient amulet. Did I mention that a statue talked to me and told me to go find a mad hermit that holds some super poweful artifact? There's also a museum that want some super rare items. And I came across a collector. The worst part of all of this is that I'm currently carrying 7 raw ebony pieces that weight 10... 10... units? each, which is really annoying, but I need it so I can get some ebony armor, but the guy who makes the armor is in Mournhold and I'm in Vivec.

I've been playing for 20 hours and haven't done even the first mission of the main quest.

In the last week, since playing an hour or so of Turok, I decided I needed a PC game on the go as well. I've since become addicted to, and nearly gotten all of the achievements on, Plants Vs Zombies, which I got for free a year or two ago on EA Origin. Remarkable depth for what is a relatively simple concept, and the wealth of mini games, puzzle modes and little extras really add to the game. The prices in the in-game shop looked ridiculous and put me off trying to complete the game until I did the survival missions and then sold off all of the fully-grown plants in my Zen garden. Suddenly rich to the tune of six figures, it all came together.

So, just the achievement for beating a normal roof mission without using catapults and five more feet of growth on the wisdom tree and I'll have beaten the game entirely. Probably all done today, then it'll be back to Turok and finding some other, hopefully less addictive PC game.

Batman Arkham Origins.

I've waited for a long time to start it, but only now got to it because the DLC is still (and always will be) a cash-grab. All the other games have either a GOTY edition (Asylum, City), or a Deluxe (Knight), but after all those years Origins has none, and the damn DLC is never going on sale, so I gave up on waiting for it and started the base game. One day I'll get the DLC, but that's not anytime soon.

Criminally underrated, it's every bit as good as the other titles in the series. My only problem is Batman's voice actor. They didn't get Kevin Conroy (or Mark Hamill for Joker, as a matter of fact) in Origins, and the replacement didn't do that good of a job. Sure, he does indeed make a very good imitation, but it's very forced at the same time. Does it fit the "younger, less experienced Batman"? I dunno, I have mixed feelings about this. Kevin's voice sounds much, much more natural.

Deathstroke's battle was a bit frustrating since, well, what you're supposed to do is not as clear as I would have liked, compared to Killer Croc (didn't get far in the game).

I'm glad the controls are identical to City, aside from extra tricks for boss battles. Oh, and speaking of it, I've known for long they had used the skeleton of City and basically set it during winter, but that becomes really apparent if you know where to look :D. I don't mind it however.

Say wut, the true ending is locked behind Riddler Trophies? Wow, now that's a bad design decision.

It probably wouldn't make much difference for me, because, well, I'm a completionist and I AM going to complete the game 100% anyway, it's just that I would have likely prefered to get them after finishing the main story, like I did with Asylum, City, and will do with Origins now too, not before.

@seed Yes, I was initially willing to give it a chance and go hunt for them but then a lot of the puzzles didn't make sense for me so I had to resort to google to look for them, then after a while I decided that I wasn't having fun hunting them anyway and said fuck it and watched the true ending on Youtube lol. the rest of the game is very good and...

Spoiler

the way they introduced joker as an Imaginary sidekick to Bruce is very clever.

No need to put spoilers for me, I've watched walkthroughs of Arkham Knight back when it first released ;).

As about trophies, I never bothered with them myself. I always play a video and follow it step by step to get the trophies.

Obsessed with Pokemon Gold. Wasn't sure if I'd be into this kind of game, or Pokemon in general, even though I watched the anime literal ages ago. Now I can say I'm a fan, and not just because I named a Spinarak 'Muffet'.

I did indeed finish Plants vs. Zombies yesterday, getting all achievements. It's good stuff. I've also done the latest week of Forza Horizon 4 seasonal content. I've also given my drivatar a sex change, as you get loads of skirts, leggings and girly shoes (OMG, gender!) and I figured the guy who bears a passing resemblance to me would look silly in them, whereas a girl who fits a very loose description of me would do just fine in them. Sadly, in this driving game, I actually change the driver's clothes every time I start the game up, and dress appropriate to the current in-game season (which changes every week). Sad, but true.

As for Turok - it's not exactly a travesty, but it is incredibly generic. I've beaten the giant T-Rex and the weird sea monster bosses. The dual-wielding system kind of makes up for the 2-weapon-plus-bow-and-knife limit, especially with the alt-fires and grenades adding the versatility and mayhem of the firepower, but I've got an overriding memory of the weapons in the two previous Turok games I've played (Evolution, on the Gamecube and Rage Wars, on the N64), which were way more interesting and didn't abandon the uniquely strange setting of The Lost World in favour of an cookie-cutter Aliens rip-off. I mean, I'll keep waiting for a fusion launcher, cerebral bore or whatever, but so far the (surprisingly good) flamethrower and sticky-explosive pistol are the only interesting weapons... Although the shotgun having alt-fire flares which make dinosaurs attack whatever they're stuck to is at least a nice touch.

@Phobus It was a terrible and unnecessary reboot that fit all the cliches of modern military style FPS. If it wasn't for the protag being called John Turok (hilarious name) I wouldn't of known it was a Turok game. If you haven't played the first two games I'd highly recommend them.

@Lila Feuer - I do intend to grab the Nightdive ports of those one day, as I've read a lot of good things. I beat the game yesterday and, I have to admit, I did start to warm to it when the volcano had gone off, I'd started making use of chaingun turrets and there was a chaotic sequence escaping an exploding base as raptors got in and the scorpion things also breached, turning it into some hectic four-way battle. The boss fight against Kane was just an underwhelming set of QTEs and the introduction of Halo 2 style swarms of bug enemies was very irritating, but it capped off with the return of the T Rex amongst lava flows.

Yes, the generic Space Marines set up and abandoning of the actual franchise plot was a shame, but the game functioned and had it's moments. It's a shame the more interesting weapons never get a chance to shine, really, as you end up using the pulse rifle so much because it's effective against the soldiers. I'll stick with my general sentiment of "mediocre" rather than an l anything more dramatic.

I've gone back to the Sega Megadrive Ultimate Collection now, trying Streets of Rage on Easy with Adam. I got to the door of the last level, but the return of the twin female bosses wore me down. I used the Specials to beat them the first time, so have no idea how to actually land hits reliably. I'll try again with Blaze and then finally go through with Axel using save states, as I actually do want to beat the game, but the collection wants me to beat Round 1 with all three characters to unlock another game.

I played the first two Turok's but I found them to be very underwhelming FPS games, nothing about them makes me want to play them a second time. The final boss of the second game glitches out and it turns out it's a problem the original version of the game had which nightdive didn't even fix for some reason. I have also played the 2009 Reboot but it's far worse than the first two games.

Streets of Rage went down reasonably easy with saves to mean I could actually learn the tougher bosses rather than fail against them and have to start the game again. I unlocked Tip Top as well (also known as Congo Bongo, apparently), by beating Round 1 of Streets of Rage with all three characters, but haven't played it yet. The final boss was very rough going, but once you know what's what he's very doable on Easy.

So, with that done, I let RNGsus take the wheel once again and ended up on Kingpin: Life of Crime. I remember it from back when it came out, but it was far too complicated for 9/10 year old me. In fact, even today it was surprisingly not intuitive and remarkably difficult. I had a false start on Normal, then dropped to Easy. Got about a third of the way into the game and then found a safe I needed to get into but couldn't. So I looked at a walk through and learned that you can loot bodies for cash if you crouch and press use on them. I started the game again on Easy and looted my way through back to where I was before, but better equipped and with hired muscle to crack the safe. Much better! From then on the game was pretty straight forward. I enjoyed the Cypress Hill soundtrack, although it was basically just 3 songs for the 6-7 hour playthrough (which, for me, was more like 10 with my various false starts). I also enjoyed the various 90s references that must have felt so current back then, like the Kingpin being Marsellus Wallace and an early boss being a massive reference to The Big Lebowski. The weird, ripply 3D models and ridiculous builds on all of the characters felt very Quake/Quake II, so I wasn't surprised to see id software credited. It's an interesting game and pretty good, I think, although very much a product of it's time.

Next up, I've decided that my collection of unbeaten Battlefield games can be taken now that I've received Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox 360 in the post for £2.50. I'll work through 3, 4, Hardline and One single player campaigns in order afterwards. Should be down to under 200 games pretty quickly, this way!

I'm playing SiN. Bloody hell, this game's humor has aged horribly (Monica Lewinski jokes in the year 2037). I know people like to rag on Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D for having antiquated humor, but at least those games didn't take themselves half as seriously as SiN does. SiN feels like it was written by an edgy fourteen-year-old whose personal hero is Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit. Furthermore, the protagonist is an obnoxious psychopath that isn't any better than the goons that he gleefully mows down.

Gameplay is fine. The environments do some neat things with the Quake 2 engine, and the guns are generally well-designed. Seeing as how this game came out the same time as Half-Life did, it's no mystery why nobody bought the thing. This isn't the underrated gem that some people make it out to be, but it is fun.
