What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

I did finish Hexen, for the first time. The last hub was rather thankfully straightforward. And I had a blast, I really appreciate the game's qualities, and appreciate how much more advanced its environment design is compared to Doom vanilla (before the community started regularly making stuff like that), and also unlike Heretic it doesn't really feel like a Doom clone as such, it has its own feel.

Makes me sad we didn't see Hecatomb.

I would've been fine even with a Hexen 3 honestly. I hated some of Hexen 2's maps due to their obtuse nature though, the Egyptian hub had some stinkers and the castle maps... don't get me started...

I definitely like Hexen as a game more than Heretic too, it's much more unique and while sure not without issues, it's a really underappreciated game. I wish more people would map for it.

Finally got myself to seriously play Mental Omega mod for C&C Yuri's Revenge. I think any fan of Command & Conquer series should definitely give it a try.

I have a lot of bad games I want to play just to experience them.

I just finished Deus Ex Invisible War, I will be forever baffled on who thought that drek was acceptable, genuinely awful story, shoddy gameplay and horrendous stealth, ghoulish.

Now I play Daikatana.

Everyone who said this isn't as bad as everyone says it is has lied to me, I was assassinated by 2 elevators, had an army of enemies stuck on at doors at least 4 separate times and had my save corrupted because I saved on a lift (because I didn't trust it).

Ghost Recon Breakpoint, got it for $10 on console... I was a huge fan of Wildlands, so I decided to finally get Breakpoint during a sale.

What to say about it... well, it's got fun action and gameplay elements. A lot of potential for character customization, a lot of tactical choices, and survival elements throughout. It plays like a hybrid of The Division 2 and Wildlands. Basically, it involves a crapload of RPG elements mixed with an arcadey open world shooter like Red Dead Redemption.

It's not for everyone, especially if you're looking for a straightforward, simple shooter... but it's pretty fun, I'll say that.

Saw Quake Champions was giving you every single champion free if you played one match. Realised I never played it. Installed. Played the practice match.

Noped right the fuck out when it was done.

It happens, lol... it's not Quake 3, I'll tell ya that much.

It's not a bad game, but it's still a pretty tedious deathmatch experience. I'm sure if you played the mode that disables all the goof-troop hero shooter elements it'd be fun, but I hate being outclassed by inherently OP characters. Especially in free for all.

finished corpse party blood drive.  not exactly thrilled with it's performance.  it's a unity engine game, which should mean good performance on the vita, right?  no, not when it was released for ios/android first then ported off that for the console, rather than being properly reworked.  such bullshit when opening inventory screen and having to sit through 10 second load times, then even LONGER load times when saving a game.

now that it's out of the way, i can focus on grandia.

Took a break from Doom and was playing Resident Evil remake (Gamecube version on Dolphin Emulator).  Still looks great even after 18 years.

Now I'm back to good ol' Doom and currently playing Czechbox, great WAD so far!

Id' rpgs for cellphone!

Asdivine Hearts

and Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2

Good Rpgs, enganging and entertaining, but i hate how obtrusive the new games become with all that tutorial material they have.

I bought Dying Light a few weeks ago to check out Hellraid. After playing through Hexen, Dark Citadel, and the two Cyrgoth episodes with all classes multiple times, I've been craving a modern melee combat game with that dark fantasy setting. The Vermintide games are cool, but I'm limited to hotspot internet right now which isn't the most reliable, so online games aren't really an option. Amid Evil didn't scratch the itch for whatever reason either. I've been looking forward to Hellraid for years and was both excited and disappointed to see it as dlc for Dying Light. I'm having way more fun than I thought, and not with Hellraid, but the actual Dying Light campaign. I'm still hopeful that someone will eventually do a modern take on Hexen, with melee combat and cryptic puzzles in a setting other than underground dungeons.

Grinding through The Hell mod for Diablo Hellfire, my poor Scout (rogue) can't clear the game even once on Horror (normal) difficulty but my recently created Mage (sorcerer) has once again proven that the sorcerer from Diablo 1 is the best (most OP) class in any ARPG.

I've almost gathered all the hidden diamonds in FC2, almost unlocked all the weapons and I only have a few more missions left before I finish the game. So I've moved to different (FPS) projects. Replaying Half Life 2, and while it's common knowledge that HL2 has been incredibly important in terms of modern game design, it's still jarring to get these vague half-remembered daydream images in my head of other games when I play through HL2.

Also, I will probably have to drudge through Crysis 2 soon. Haven't played that piece of shit in almost a year, fucking shit sucks but I've started it and I will finish it. Sometimes you gotta play a bad game to remember what makes games good.

Violent Storm - One of Konami's best beat 'em up games. The soundtrack is great and there's always something humorous happening in the background. The gameplay completely copies Final Fight, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Incredibly underrated game.

Ikari Warriors 3 - It's an improvement over the first two games, but that isn't saying much. Hit detection is wonky, enemy variety is lacking, the environments are dull, and unless you count the same tank showing up four times, there aren't even any boss fights. Well below average.

I stopped playing Tales of Maj'Eyal. I was tired of all the bullshit. It's not a bad game at all, just frustrating at times. If you have played any roguelikes, maybe you know a bit about that.

I started up playing the Avernum series again. I've played the first three two times before, but 4 -6 was only played once. Even on the third playthrough in two years, they are great games. Currently at the start of Avernum 2.

Minecraft is a game I'll probably phase in and out of for the rest of time. Lately I've been getting into the history of the game's development and have been trying to recreate the alpha/beta aesthetic in a semi-modern version (1.11) with double-resolution textures.

I started playing Starcraft again for the first time in about 20 years. The remastered update looks fantastic. It hasn't aged a bit and remains one of the best PC games ever made.

thinking about stopping Grandia.  i'm really not enjoying the battle system, it's the only thing i'm disliking.  the music is comical as is the writing, and the overall atmosphere is very lighthearted.  guess i'll stare down my vita/psp backlog once again.

Whoever designed the roof fight in the "Follow Freeman!" level should be slowly and methodically tortured to death because FUCK LEVELS THAT ENDLESSLY SPAWN ENEMIES AND DON'T FUCKING EXPLAIN THAT FUCKING SHIT. I've been sniping these motherfuckers off the roof for HALF AN HOUR grabbing ammo with the gravity gun slowly getting my health whittled down FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Goddamn gravity gun is great, but sometimes it just breaks typical videogame level design logic and you end up in situations like this.

Been playing Ultima 7 recently through Exult, pretty great game but the combat is definitely a step down from the previous games. Also I kind of ruined the game for myself since I figured how to consistently win the rat race casino game. Going to force myself to not exploit it again so there's that.

Well, I have started a run as a fighter-mage in Baldur's Gate 2 and I'd really like to finish this run for once. I've started a whole bunch of times but only made it to the end truly once, with a couple of runs being ruined by something breaking. (that was pre-Enhanced Edition though so hoping that won't be an issue anymore) I'm going to run with Minsc, Aerie, Yoshimo (at least until that point*), Jaheira and Mazzy, but I recruited Nalia first to get the fighter stronghold, will swap her out when I do get to Mazzy. And I also hope to take it to the end of Throne of Bhaal as well, I have never played that much. I've never even entered Watchers Keep, honestly I think if any game genuinely qualifies as having too much quality** content it does.

However, I've also been working my way on the Doom Wad, No End in Sight. And I made it, all the way to Wartorn Precinct before my soul broke. I beat it, I had to idfa at the end because otherwise it was a no-win scenario. Level after that was actually pretty standard, but, Sanctuary of Filth is basically asking the question "is it worth it?" You know, when a level has 429 enemies and two of the first 10 are cyberdemons...

* - where Imoen will of course take his spot

** - so the Elder Scrolls games are disqualified, because there's a lot of reliance on filler content with those, whereas I wouldn't describe anything in BG2 as filler.

You're like the second person I see not enjoying NEIS. The other is myself, but for different reasons.

I never understood its popularity, it's overappreciated in my book, and has some of the most confusing maps I've seen in wads, more so than the much reviled Eternal Doom which I've actually had a blast playing through, but good grief... NEIS got especially frustrating when even fake exists showed up, as a middle finger to the player.

I appreciate the attention to detail and design of some maps, but everything else is just plain average and boring imo, and the combat is aggressively underwhelming... I never finished it properly, I cheated at the very end after tormenting myself with the wad and called it a day, then nuked it, never to resurface again.

Well, I made it all the way to the 4th episode, before I felt the difficulty got a bit too much. Honestly I appreciate that whilst they wanted clearly to make a pretty hard, pretty epic map set, they showed a lot more restraint with the difficulty than many. Because I'm not someone who has been playing Doom religiously for decades, my perspective is one of someone who's really just got into it in the last 2-3 years, and some mapsets I've tried are clearly not intended for anyone but people who fall in that former camp. Ancient Aliens, Sunlust among others seem to expect master level gameplay from level 1. With NEIS there's a ramp up and it doesn't start really hard, and there's some great levels in there. The first episode was probably the best one and Quarantine Silos was still pretty fair in difficulty even with the huge monster count. Its possible if I drop from Hurt Me Plenty to one of the lower difficulty levels on the 4th episode it might help, but I'd say my general criticism is the repetition in those levels with 350+ monsters, and... again because of that repetition, it would have been better if it was based on Doom 2. So often did I feel "if only I had the super shotty".

But yeah, I guess I'm glad to see others in the community who's skill levels are not completely out of my league. I did all of Plutonia on Hurt Me Plenty, and I only cheated on the final level of TNT Revilution also on Hurt Me Plenty because the designer cheated (invincible gun turrets have no place in Doom). That's pretty much my ceiling. NEIS doesn't really get much until the 4th episode.

nb - so I tried playing Sanctuary of Filth on I'm Too Young to Die. It's not much easier, and fighting cyberdemons one after another in enclosed spaces is not fun. I think after all that I'm rather burnt out on the id FPS style and I maybe need a major break from it. Maybe play the CRPGs instead for a bit.
