dybbuk81 Posted July 2, 2017 (edited) I need input on this forum system for a third-party doom fansite that I'm going to try to make rather large http://www.delehrious.net/personal/doom here is the forum: http://doomed.activeboard.com/ let me know if anything is missing, but know that I am already aware I need to branch things out further with more subforums, esp. MS-DOS Would you visit regularly if this became populated? 1 Share this post Link to post
BadLuckBurt Posted July 2, 2017 I recommend changing the forum colours to something other than red or if you really like red, at least change the background colour on the body. It's hard to say if I'd visit when there's no content but I usually stick around on forums that have: In-depth discussion A fun crowd Information I need Have you considered rebuilding the site? I noticed it's all tables and iframes. The iframes break navigation on the site since you're always stuck on the same URL. I would replace the animated background with a static one, it will be easier on the eyes. 1 Share this post Link to post
dybbuk81 Posted July 2, 2017 I love actual constructive criticism. Good job! I always wondered how to populate a blank forum 0 Share this post Link to post
BadLuckBurt Posted July 2, 2017 You're welcome. If you don't mind, I might play around with the site a bit (not the forum) to make it more modern. I don't know much about populating a forum, especially one with many sub forums, they can be quite intimidating. Getting some people on board to post some initial content probably helps, empty sections aren't very inviting to post in. Don't expect it to take off overnight either, it can take quite some time before it becomes 'popular'. Unique content, as far as that's possible on the internet, goes a long way, so does having up-to-date news. 1 Share this post Link to post
dybbuk81 Posted July 2, 2017 Well if you go to http://www.delehrious.net/personal and click 'Classic DOOM Megasite' under 'Fansites' it loads within the bigger page. I have removed all sub-forums from the community page and altered its size. It has been moved to being the DOOMTALK button on the megasite. Soon I will replace the double iframe to have a frameset within an iframe? Feel free to play around with the site, I can zip it up for you minus any large wad files. Do as you like. 0 Share this post Link to post
VGA Posted July 4, 2017 To be honest I don't think there is much of a need for a new Doom forum, there are already so many. And Doomworld is awesome, especially with the new forum software that helps you track the threads you want and when you are quoted or mentioned. The big ports also have their own forums, too, and there's DRDTeam and some language-specific Doom forums etc etc 0 Share this post Link to post
The Nate Posted July 4, 2017 In the "Play Doom" section, please remove the part where it says you can get the IWADs on torrent, because I'm afraid it might encourage pirates or cause others to become pirates. 1 Share this post Link to post

It feels like a throwback to 90s websites to be honest. You don't need iFrames or framesets anymore to load content dynamically, you can do that with AJAX. The forum itself feels very squished now: http://doomed.activeboard.com/. I assume you did that to 'fit' the forum into the iFrame that displays it within your site but that doesn't make it very inviting to read. This post is still do-able: http://doomed.activeboard.com/t63709175/my-snapmaps/ but if someone posts something larger, I don't think it'll work very well. The majority of modern websites adapt to screensizes. If you don't mind zipping it up, I'll have a go at it later this week and hopefully have something to show before the end of the weekend. 0 Share this post Link to post
dybbuk81 Posted July 4, 2017 You guys are all right by the way The reason I made it was to share 90s cd-roms but wad-archive does this now I can't think of a "new" purpose other than a fanmade megasite but I dont even have the time 0 Share this post Link to post
dybbuk81 Posted July 6, 2017 If there were a new something we could do I would completely contribute all needed web parts. I would do the monotonous shit I did want to start one though. always have, or contribute graphics to another. make flashy buttons, etc. Right now I have a soundtrack to make for $$ though so I'm totally sucked into that as of the past 3 days 0 Share this post Link to post
