Why do wads stop at 32 Maps?

Recommended Posts

Doom II had 32 maps. Lots of ports can only play 32 maps normally -- 1->15->31->32->16->30, with 31 and 32 being the secret maps -- and maps after 32, if playable, have to be warped to directly. Presumably you have played Doom only in (G)ZDoom or a similar port, which gets rid of these limitations.

If you are curious about wads that go past 32 maps, check this page out and sort with the maps column.

Vanilla Doom 2 engine was coded specifically for Doom 2's map count and progression. Classic ports generally didn't do anything to let map authors control progression beyond what was possible in the original engine. As a result, wads that aim to be vanilla, limit removing, Boom, or MBF compatible, have no way to change map progression. This also means that higher map slots can't be accessed through exits of regular maps. And if you try to access maps in higher slots via cheats or command line parameters, their functionality may vary from port to port. So generally, this is what creates the limitation.

Gonna hijack this thread for a second to ask how the heck did this guy make this many maps alone. And how the heck is anyone supposed to finish playing either of these wads?

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/30,000_Levels

30,000 Levels is a joke WAD by Doomguy 2000. Weighing in at 9.83 MB, This WAD contains 30,000 levels each consisting of a square room with an exit switch directly in front of the player. The primary concept is to test the player's patience in repeatedly hitting the use key. This WAD includes custom sounds and music, menu graphics, and a modified text ending, with music changing each level until level 100. Afterward, the music only changes every 100 levels.

[...]

Originally, 30,000 Levels was planned to contain, and be named, 100,000 Levels, but this was eventually abandoned, owing to all resources being duplicated up to 46,000 times before the author began to experience crashes.
