Is armor pointless?

Armor makes gameplay simply by adding an additional wrinkle to Doom's resource management mechanics. When armor and health are tracked and replenished independently it gives the player another thing to think about and the level designer many more opportunities for dynamic enemy encounters, item-based gameplay (i.e. armor or health denial), and tension/release loops to provide a more powerful experience for the player.

Personally I can't wait to be able to use armor in ECWolf mods, the lack of it is a serious limitation for level design in the Wolfenstein engine (and perhaps even moreso than a lack of armor would be for Doom, considering how heavily Wolfenstein tilts towards hitscan threats).

Weird that with all that ECWolf is capable of, there still hasn't been an implementation of amour.

I think when it comes to amour, even Doom is a pretty outdated engine.

Armor isn't pointless, as it can be useful when it comes to reducing damage of more powerful attacks.

That's right.

Play multiplayer and ask this question again.

He'll just follow it up with 'Doom's multiplayer was a mistake.'

I think he's looking for an ultimate question that no one is going to agree with and he doesn't need to reply at all. He's getting close though XD

If armor was pointless it wouldn't be in the game.

in other games there are essentially things that are pointless that are still in the game.

FWIW the person who convinced me that blue armour was better than a soulsphere (in reference to my post on page 1 -- I didn't actually come to the conclusion myself) was a multiplayer specialist. I forget exactly who, maybe Hex or Ladna or Infurnus, credit to you whoever you were. It was from a discussion about what items other than PINV/PINS should not respawn in deathmatch. He said blue armour and I said why, isn't that the same as a soulsphere, they both give you 200 health effectively. No, he said, because you can keep your health topped up with the armour, so it's strictly better.

He said blue armour and I said why, isn't that the same as a soulsphere, they both give you 200 health effectively. No, he said, because you can keep your health topped up with the armour, so it's strictly better.

In other words:

you start with 100 health.

If you get a soul sphere: you get 200 health and take 100% of all damage dealt.

and a blue armor gets you 100 health but you take only 50% of all damage dealt until the armor runs out (or you pick up a green armor with less than 100 armor units).

Both cases will require you to take 200 points of damage until you die - twice of 100 is 200.

So let's say you get hit by a Revenant's missile for 50 damage.

With soul sphere: you take the full 50 damage and have 150 health left. You cannot heal this without health bonuses, soulspheres, or megaspheres. An armor bonus counts as a green armor, which means 1/3 damage reductions. Because you have no armor, it takes 150 damage to kill you.

With blue armor: the armor absorbs half so you take 25 and have 75 health left plus 175 armor left. You can heal this using stimpacks and medikits. Also, an armor bonus counts towards 1/2 damage reduction. Because you have enough blue armor, it takes 75 / 0.5 = 150 damage to kill you.

So yes, in both Single Player and Multiplayer, a blue armor does more than a soul sphere. A megasphere equals 4 medikits + a soul sphere + a blue armor.

health is pointless, really. Just give the player invulnerability spheres.
