Doom III Frequently Asked Questions - NEWCOMERS READ THIS FIRST

Recommended Posts

Hello. We've been having a little too many topics around here asking the same old questions about Doom 3, so here's a little FAQ for all you newcomers who are eager to talk about the game but aren't up to scratch yet with some of the basics. Read this before posting, and welcome to the Doom 3 forum !

What is Doom 3?

Doom 3 is the latest installment of the Doom series. It is being made by id Software, the team that made Doom, Wolfenstein and the Quake games.

Doom 3 alpha + magazine scans?

We all know there is a leaked alpha of Doom3 floating around the internet. Linking to the Doom3 alpha, screenshots of the Doom3 alpha and the likes is an instant ban. It is not a bannable offense to talk about the Doom3 Alpha, as we can't and won't force people to NOT discuss the subject. We urge you to report any 'illegal' posts to the Doom3 moderator(s), the supermoderators or the admins the second you see them. (You could also simply use the 'Report to mod' button)

It has only just come to our attention that linking to scans from PCGamer or any other magazine is illegal, so the same rules apply to those. The forum has been cleaned of scan links, but if we have missed some and you see any, report it to the mod.

So what's the big fuss all about?

Pretty much everything. The engine is a huge advance in technology and aside from that it is a new Doom game, damnit.

Q) Where can I find some great info on Doom 3?

A) Many places, such as http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/info/ , http://www.doomworld.com/links/?category=2 and the Doomworld Doom 3 forums.

Q) This all sounds so cool, is there any videos or screenies?

A) Yep. They can be found here at http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/movies/ and screenies at http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/screenshots/ .

Q) What about bootleg videos?

A) There are illegal videos of Doom 3 floating around the Internet, but we can't tell you where to get them since id Software doesn't want them to spread.

Q) What about leaked betas or something?

A) An early tech demo of the game got leaked at E3 2002. Asking for it or linking to it on these forums is an insta-ban. That goes for screenshots from the Alpha too. Discussion of it is fine however.

Q) Who is working on Doom 3?

A) *shamelessly ripped from the old Doom 3 FAQ*

Programmers:

  • John Carmack
  • Jim Dose
  • Jan Paul van Waveren
  • Robert Duffy
  • Graeme Devine - sadly, he left
Level designers:
  • Paul Jaquays - he left too
  • Tim Willits
  • Christian Antkow
  • Malvern Blackwell
Artists:
  • Adrian Carmack
  • Kevin Cloud
  • Kenneth Scott
  • Seneca Menard
  • Fred Nilsson
Music:
  • Trent Reznor - looks like he also dropped his work on the game
Misc:
  • Marty Stratton (biz guy)
  • Eric Webb (intern / tech support)
  • Todd Hollenshead (CEO)
  • Donna Jackson (id mom)
Q) So, what's the story? How are they gonna make the transition from Doom 2 to Doom 3?

A) Doom 3 is (despite its confusing name) a retelling of Doom 1 - imagine that Doom 1 and Doom 2 never happened.

Q) Man, this stuff is so cool but I want inside information, not just from some Doom news site. Where can I get the skinny on Doom 3 from id themselves?

A) Right here sparky http://www.webdog.org/cgi-bin/showc...y=id%20Software

Q) Ok, Doom 3 looks sweet but will we have to wait for the final product before playing it?

A) Unfortunately, yes. There will be a demo released a little while after the full game though.

Q) The one question on everyone's mind. WHEN!?

A) August 5th 2004 in the US, a week or two later for the rest of the world, depending where you live.

Q) What are the system requirements of Doom 3?

A) These requirements are more or less official.
  • Absolute minimum: 1.5Ghz CPU, 384MB RAM, 64MB GeForce3/Radeon8500 class video card
  • Recommended: 2Ghz+ CPU, 512MB RAM, 128 MB video card (GeForceFX, Radeon 9700 or higher)
  • Excellent: 3.0Ghz+ CPU, even more RAM, 256MB+ video card (GeForce6800, ATI's newest cards). If you really want constant 60+ fps gameplay at a high resolution, you're best off buying the latest and greatest video card just before or after the game comes out. And of course there's loads of performance/quality settings to tweak to your liking.
  • Windows 2000/XP MINIMUM, with binaries for Linux and MacOS on their way at the time of this writing.
Q) What weapons are confirmed?

A) Most of the original Doom weapons, if not all will be returning.
Confirmed weapons so far:
  • Fist (plus berserk pack)
  • Chainsaw
  • Pistol
  • Single-barreled shotgun
  • Machinegun
  • Chaingun
  • Rocket Launcher
  • Plasma Rifle
  • BFG
  • Soul Cube
Q) Items, monsters, what about them?

A) Very little to no info has been given on the items but expect to see a lot of old Doom favorites returning in Doom 3.

Q) Will Doom 3 be ported to any consoles?

A) There will be an X-Box port of Doom 3. No release date yet.

For more information about Doom 3, feel free to hang around the forums a bit and don't be afraid to ask questions (apart from those I answered above).
