Hello. We've had a few too many topics around here asking the same old questions about Doom 3, so here's a little FAQ for all you newcomers who are eager to talk about the game but aren't yet up to scratch with the basics. Read this before posting, and welcome to the Doom 3 forum!

Q) What's the release date?

A) August 3rd 2004. It could be a few more days after that however until it arrives in your nearest game store.

Q) Hey, that Doom 3 alpha...!

A) Yes, there is a leaked alpha version of Doom 3 floating around the Internet. Do not ask for it. Requesting or linking to the alpha, screenshots of the alpha and the likes is your ticket to an instant ban. We urge you to report any offending posts to the staff the second you see them (use the 'Report to mod' button or send a message).

Discussion about the alpha is not an offence in itself. We've however seen far too many people come here just to complain about a feature or lack of a feature in the alpha. Please don't do this. The leaked alpha is not in any way representative of the final game and impressions from it aren't a good ground for any conclusions.

Q) So what's the big fuss all about?

A) Pretty much everything. The engine is a huge advance in technology and aside from that it is a new Doom game, damnit.

Q) What monsters and weapons will be in it?

As far as we know, all the original Doom weapons and most if not all monsters will return in new incarnations. There will also be at least one new weapon and several original monsters. The original Doom monsters confirmed so far are:

  • Possessed Soldiers (of various kinds)
  • Imps
  • Pinky demons
  • Lost Souls
  • Cacodemons
  • Hell Knights
  • Mancubi
  • Revenants
  • Arch-Viles
  • Cyberdemons
  • Spider Masterminds or Arachnotrons (we don't know which)
Q) Where can I find some great info on Doom 3?

A) Many places, such as http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/info/ , http://www.doomworld.com/links/?category=2 and the Doomworld Doom 3 forums.

Q) This all sounds so cool, is there any videos or screenies?

A) Yep. They can be found here at http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/movies/ and screenies at http://www.doomworld.com/doom3/screenshots/ .

Q) What about bootleg videos?

A) There are illegal videos of Doom 3 floating around the Internet, but we can't tell you where to get them since id Software doesn't want them to spread.

Q) What about magazine scans then?

Linking to scans from PCGamer or any other magazine is illegal, so the same rules apply to those. The forum has been cleaned of scan links, but if we have missed some and you see any, report it to the staff.

Q) Who is working on Doom 3?

A) Programmers:
  • John Carmack
  • Jim Dose
  • Jan Paul van Waveren
  • Robert Duffy
  • Graeme Devine - sadly, he left
Level designers:
  • Paul Jaquays - he left too
  • Tim Willits
  • Christian Antkow
  • Malvern Blackwell
  • Adrian Carmack
  • Kevin Cloud
  • Kenneth Scott
  • Seneca Menard
  • Fred Nilsson
  • Marty Stratton (biz guy)
  • Eric Webb (intern / tech support)
  • Todd Hollenshead (CEO)
  • Donna Jackson (id mom)
  • Pat Duffy (GUI & misc)
Q) Is Trent Reznor making the music?

No, it has been confirmed that he left the project.

Q) So, what's the story? How are they gonna make the transition from Doom 2 to Doom 3?

A) Doom 3 is (despite its confusing name) a retelling of Doom 1 - imagine that Doom 1 and Doom 2 never happened. Some details about the story have been revealed, as posted in threads such as this (warning: contains spoilers).

Q) Ok, Doom 3 looks sweet but will we have to wait for the final product before playing it?

A) John Carmack has said there will be a test, however another id employee stated that it was unlikely as Doom 3 has little focus on multiplayer, so we're not sure about this. id Software did demonstrate the multiplayer part of the game to the public at 2003's QuakeCon event.

Q) What are the system requirements of Doom 3?

A) These requirements are not official but educated guesses.
  • Absolute minimum: 1Ghz+ CPU, 256MB RAM, GeForce1 or Radeon7000+ video card
  • Recommended: 2Ghz+ CPU, 512MB RAM, GeForce3 or Radeon 8500
  • Excellent: 2.5Ghz+ CPU, even more RAM, GeForce4, Radeon 9700 or higher. If you really want constant 60 fps gameplay at a high resolution, you're best off buying the latest and greatest video card just before or after the game comes out.

Q) Will Doom 3 be ported to any consoles?

A) An X-Box port is on its way, as being developed by Vicarious Visions. The game will most likely not be ported to any other consoles, however.

For more information about Doom 3, feel free to hang around the forums a bit and don't be afraid to ask questions (apart from those we answered above).
