Your favorite anime?

Hey guys, so I read the post regarding reccommendations for an anime, and it got me thinking. Now that my sister has pretty much converted me into an anime otaku, I'd love to know what your personal favorite shows are. It'd be a good way to hear of all the great shows out there.

The big three for me are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Evangelion, and Monogatari Series. I love them all dearly.

 

There are a lot of others I've enjoyed, but it's hard to make a list without leaving out so many great ones. Let's give it a try with some of the big highlights though: Shirobako, Welcome to the NHK, Nichijou, Scum's Wish, March Comes In Like A Lion, Sound of the Sky, Psycho-Pass, Mushishi, Steins;Gate, Gargantia...

 

Airing this season, Girls' Last Tour is pretty fantastic, a postapocalyptic slice-of-life series about two girls aimlessly traveling the remains of an empty and ruined world.

 

Last season, Princess Principal and Made In Abyss were absolutely great.

 

A Silent Voice is fantastic as far as movies go. I just found out it's showing in a theater near here next week so I'm excited to get a chance to see it again on a bigger screen. Kyoto Animation's TV series already look better than most movies, so when they do a movie they really go all-out, and A Silent Voice is a beautiful rendition of a painfully real and human story.

As an infrequent watcher, Chaika the Coffin Princess and Sisters of Wellber come to mind as ones I enjoyed.  They have the typical "last few episodes are a bit over the top" sort of thing going on though.  I also remember liking Mnemosyne and Vampire Hunter D but watched them so long ago I could barely tell you a thing about them without digging them out again.  Cyber City Oedo 808 is priceless for the hilariously terrible dub it was given and is... otherwise okay I guess.  I would put Claymore on the list but it's one of those that the anime version abridged a lot compared to the manga, and suffers from it.

I have no idea how to pick favorites out of hundreds and hundreds of watched titles so I'll just list a few good ones.

 

Galaxy Express 999 - long long magical adventure that shows many different worlds and asks tons of wise philosophical questions.

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi - sweetest BL anime that I know, with extremely adorable characters, believable dialogues, and satisfying portrayal of relationships.

Lady Georgie - epic drama about a little girl that gets adopted and changes the lives of everyone in the family, plus it talks a lot about old Australia.

Kaleido Star - unique in that it is the only anime about circus I can think of, and a very touching one thanks to a great cast.

Kidou Senkan Nadesico - self-mocking mecha series and an insane emotional journey that made me laugh, cry, and everything in between.

Zegapain - another nice dramatic mecha series somewhat reminiscent of Matrix, the atmosphere is superb.

Oniisama e - a heartwrenching school drama about incest, lesbianism, drug addiction, suicidal tendencies, pornography, and all that controversial stuff.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena - eh, maybe someone else can describe it.

Atmosphere in Eve no Jikan can make viewer think up a lot of philosophical Sci-Fi questions even without mentioning them just because it would feel excessive and repeatable.

Shin Sekai Yori - it has the most mature villain of all I've seen.

FLCL, Kimi No Na Wa, Tamako Love Story, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Eva, Nichijou, the Little Witch Academia Ova, Redline, all the Ghibli stuff, Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo, Gunsmith Cats. Not necessarily in order, may have missed something.

For the longest time I considered Berserk to be my no. 1. However, after having seen it two and a half months ago, I've recently come to the conclusion that not only is Puella Magi Madoka Magica my favourite anime, but most likely my second favourite TV series next to Breaking Bad. The series lead to me picking up the set of Madoka Magica: The Different Story manga, which right now is the only manga I've ever read. 

 

Also, Homura Akemi is my favourite female superhero.

It's a damn amazing story, I don't think I've seen anything else that affected me in quite the same way. Have you seen Rebellion?

Yup, I remember we briefly spoke about it a little while ago.

 

I want to love the movie for its incredible music, animation, action sequences, and generally excellent writing, but the ending was just so unbelievably screwy and out of left field. It felt like a complete slap in the face, as I felt it undermined Homura's strong character development and moral compass. But I can still acknowledge and appreciate its technical qualities, and really think it should have gotten a best animated movie Oscar nomination. The fact that it left me feeling emotionally drained and unsatisfied is entirely subjective.

 

However, I might feel differently about it down the road. I'm eager to see what maturates from the 'Concept Movie Trailer'.

You're not alone there, it's pretty polarizing.

Personally I thought the ending felt like the logical conclusion of Homura's broken, obsessively-protective character.

 

I still haven't read The Different Story, I like the premise a bunch though and I've heard it's really good! Ought to check it out one of these days.

@esselfortium You should absolutely read The Different Story. It's an essential read for fans, especially if you like Mami. It's extremely faithful to the characters, and feels entirely genuine. 

 

I'm surprised there aren't any mentions of Death Note. I think that it's one of the best examples of a gateway anime, and I would easily recommend it to anyone who isn't already a fan of anime. I plan on reading the prequel manga for it in the not too distant future.

@Ajora Good call! Death Note is definitely good as a gateway series. Strong premise that’s unique and easy to get into, lots of suspense and intrigue, and some really entertaining characters. It’s an addictive page-turner, pun only slightly intended.

Hokuto no Ken:  If it has Kenshiro, it is great!!! By the way, the movie rocks!

Death Note:  The one anime that I have seen almost to the end (2 anime means that I am barely an anime fan) and it is awesome. I like how Light gets crazy as many episodes pass by. He is insane, but he is in full control of his actions and he has developed many crazy plans, with the one where he gave away the rights to his Death Note being the best, imo. Then L is also a very well created character and a very fun opponent (right now I am after episode 25 or something, so something that I won't spoil happened).

I wouldn't have written about that, because I couldn't remember, but one time during noon, I found the movies in youtube and I watched them. They were pretty good and I enjoyed seeing them in my free time. And that final fight in the first one was cool! (if only the revelation about D happened earlier in the movie, there would have probably been even more crazy scenes)

Or that ending in Bloodlust was emotional and I still remember it.

My trinity consists of: Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star and K-On!

 

Lately however, I had been getting into Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, and I love it a lot. Even if Araki keeps forgetting stuff about his characters all the time, causing stupid plot points, huh, everything else, though, is perfectly fine.

 

Latest serie which I finished was Binbougami ga! (God of Misfortune), and I am deeply afraid of starting another serie because exams and stuff.

 

I recommend Haruhi to everyone though. I would fucking recommend it to my grandma because of how good that shit is.

In my life I've only ever seen a few actual anime that I didn't hate, those are Hellsing, Golgo 13 and Evangelion.

 

I really don't like anime but those 3 were actually really good (especially Golgo 13, love that art style) and were actually tolerable to watch for me where as normally I just can't stand anime (which speaks volumes of those three's quality).

 

Also, watching Fist of the North Star drunk with your bromandos is the best thing ever.

Hellsing: Impure Souls is the only I've shown interest in. Didn't finish watching the episodes however, but it was nice the first 3 or four episodes I saw.

Oh boy, where do I start? I'll recommend some that I haven't seen on this thread yet.

 

Monster - A long and slow exploration of nihilism and its effects on human society. Plus great plot, characters, and one of the best antagonists in fiction.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Space opera and Military drama at its finest. Arguably the largest cast of characters in a TV show with fantastic development for almost all of them.

The Tatami Galaxy - An analysis of choice. It has a pretty unique art-style and a ridiculously fast pace. The director has made other great shows like Kaiba and Ping Pong.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - Great Shonen. Pretty solid cast of characters and a fun plot.

Haibane Renmei - A brilliant show by the director of Serial Experiments Lain. Some of the best world-building I've seen in anime.

Princess Tutu - Hands down the best Magical Girl show I've seen.

Kaiji - A fantastic thriller like Death Note! It's a lot more consistent in terms of quality though. 

Koi Kaze - Umm ... Incest. Although it's handled really well and doesn't boil over into incessant fan-service.

Rose of Versailles - Old but gold. Great Historical drama, a genre that has faded out over time.

Ghost in the Shell - A classic science fiction show dealing with concepts like identity. A similar show is Planetes.

Ehh, Evangelion is my favorite show as well, but I'm rather accepting towards a lot of genres in anime in particular. I respect your opinion, though.

 

I watch a lot of shows by Kyoto tho (don't even try to, I just end up watching there shows)

I want to say Voltron: Legendary Defender, except that doesn't exactly qualify as anime - but the original does, I think! The original is basically a campier version of its original, Beast King Golion, a grim and gritty sci-fi thriller about the last humans alive forming the titular machine to fight a galactic empire.
