UltraHD Texture Pack - 2nd Tech Demo released!

Recommended Posts

I have upgraded my software.  I upgraded Filter Forge 7 Pro to Filter Forge 8 Pro and paid extra to get a zip emailed to me containing every filter on their server so I don't need to go online, find filters and add them to Filter Forge.  Hopefully, this means I have a lot of new filters I can use to aid me in making new textures and according to Filter Forge the filters should render quicker with Filter Forge 8.

I am going to look at changing up my diet to see if things improve.  All the meds are damaging my heart and liver.  I will be seeing a specialist soon and will get a referral for a cardiologist.  I am going to do what I can to take charge and get back on my feet and making textures.

Feet, heart and liver first my dude. Your health is temporary, but Doom is eternal.

My texture pack has been put on hold for reasons out of my control.

My CPU is failing.  I didn't realize my BSOD crashes were due to heat as the CPU cooler was set to adjust the fans based on the temps of the cooler itself.  When I configured it to adjust the fans to the CPU (namely CPU Core #1) the fans took off like a jet and when I rebooted and enabled HWMonitor immediately, just booting up it was hitting 95 degrees.  When I do CPU intensive tasks like converting an audio or video file with programs like Handbrake or Format Factory, or rendering out the filters I use in my texture work on Photoshop the System was crashing with a BSOD (0xc00000124 WHEA Uncorrectable Error) because the CPU would hit 100 degrees within 15 seconds of putting the CPU to 100% usage.

Often my rig was even crashing with a BSOD when a program was updating or I was installing updated drivers for my Sound Card or GPU.  Razer Synapse updates were huge culprits for BSOD crashes, especially if they were happening during bootup.  And I often have to reinstall my Sound Card drivers after a forced Windows 10 update as it always borked my Sound Drivers causing my center channel, rear channels, and sub to not emit any sound.  often reinstalling or repairing these drivers would have to be done 2 or 3 times due to my rig crashing with that dreaded BSOD (0xc00000124 WHEA Uncorrectable Error).

I have a Corsair H115i 280mm dual-fan AIO cooler that should be more than enough to keep an i7-4790k cool, but in recent weeks it is not able to do much at all in keeping it cool.  It looks like the CPU is failing and even small loads cause such a rise in temps even a Heavy-duty AIO cooler can't keep up with it.  4% CPU usage pushes my CPU temp 50 degrees, which is unacceptable for a Corsair H115i Cooler that I bought in 2018, just opening my browser pushes the CPU temps to the mid-'60s

I went into BIOS and Disabled XMP tuning and turned off the CPU Turbo mode completely so the 4.4Ghz CPU went back to 4.0Ghz and the 2.4Ghz RAM was downclocked to 1.33Mhz, disabled most non-Microsoft services and most startup items (including Adobe CC, which was taking a lot of CPU resources just sitting in the background, as was Razer Synapse for my Black Widow Chroma v2 keyboard), and the CPU still goes into the 60 degrees mark during bootup and to 80 degrees in any game I tried that isn't a CPU hog.  I won't touch any of my Denuvo protected games as the last time I fired up one of those (Star Wars Battlefront 2015) I got a BSOD (0xc00000124 WHEA Uncorrectable Error) just adjusting the control sensitivity in the menu.  Denuvo puts too much of a load on the CPU with it's many, many hook calls to its authentication server per second than my CPU in its current state can handle, and it overheats and crashes my rig.

I now have to look at the very real prospect of trying to amass a large number of funds (around $1,500.00AUD) for a new Motherboard, a 9th Gen i7 and at least 32Gb of DDR4 RAM, before I can resume work on my texture pack.  This will not be an easy task as my recent health battles have drained my savings and I am currently unable to work due to my physical and psychological health.  I won't even be able to get my rig to a repair shop to be looked at for another week as I don't have access to a vehicle this week, and my back is too bad to move the rig, so I can't do anything like reseat the cooler or any other manual work on it.  My rig is very heavy and I have a very bad back from a car crash in 1996, so I have to make sure I treat my rig with kid gloves and not run anything with a moderate or high CPU load until I can either get it fixed or the faulty hardware replaced.

Press "F" to pay respects to my dying i7-4790k. It served me well, but alas, all things must eventually come to an end. :'(

A small glimmer of hope would be if the CPU cooler is faulting, if the CPU needs to be reseated with new thermal paste or if the BIOS of the ASUS Z97k needs to be flashed.  I should be able to get it looked into in a week or so and hope I don't have to fork out for a new MoBo, CPU, and RAM as my finances are dire ATM.

My rig is going into the shop today for rigorous hardware testing to identify the issue, and then getting the faulty hardware replaced.  Hopefully, it won't be too long a time without my baby and I am hoping to get it back in tip-top shape so I can get back to working on textures.

The CPU was faulty so I now have a Ryzen 9 3900X CPU, a Gigabyte Aorus X570 Pro Wifi MoBo, 32Gb of Crucial Ballistix 3200 DDR4 Ram (2x 16Gb sticks in dual-channel mode), and a Deepcool Castle 280RGB AIO Cooler.  I also got a 500Gb Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 SSD drive and am now running the OS on that.

Once I have everything reinstalled, set up, and reactivated I will see how much better performance my 12 core (24 thread) CPU gives when rendering filters for my texture work.  For some reason Filter Forge 8 won't add itself to the plugins for Photoshop CC2020 so I have to use Photoshop CC2019 until Adobe fixes this.  As a Creative Cloud subscriber, I think I will contact Adobe customer support in the not too distant future and ask them to allow Filter Forge 8 Pro to be used as a filter plugin in photoshop CC2020.

EDIT:  It seems Filter Forge 8 Pro not working for Photoshop CC2020 as a filter plugin was an intentional move by the Filter Forge team.  I will have to fork out for Filter Forge 9 Pro to be able to use Filter Forge with Photoshop CC2020 as a plugin, with no guarantee of not having to Fork out again for Filter Forge 10 Pro, when Photoshop CC2021 gets released.  This is becoming a very expensive venture for me.

I have this one - HOOVER1979_UltraHD_Texture_Pack_02102018_Main, ( can also list any other DOOM game like DOOM, DOOM 2, TNT, Plutonia, and works with Chaos Maps also). It's weird how there are about 5 pk3's with this wad, but I don't think it matters which ones load with which game.  Pretty optimized actually.

The main file is used in all Doom games and the smaller files are overrides for each individual Doom game.

An example is Plutonia experiment level 2.  The animated texture has a couple of frames that have the same filenames as the FIREBLU textures, so the texture animation is borked without the Plutonia override being run alongside the main file for Plutonia experiment.  Also, the sky textures from Doom 1, Plutonia and TNT are in the override files and if the overrides aren't used, then all games have the same sky textures as doom 2.

I wanted to get this done outside of a pk3 structure and have it in a textures folder with the overrides being in subfolders, and I did get the doom 1 overrides to work without interfering in doom 2 that way.  However, I can't get Plutonia and TNT overrides to work in a file/folders format and that sucks as there is more stuttering in PK3 format with the size of the textures and if the PK3 gets too large in file size no HD textures get used, so as time goes on I will need the main file to be in split pk3 files.   I think GZDoom will ignore PK3 files if they exceed 2Gb.

As a result, when I get the 3rd demo released, I will have the main files and Doom 1 overrides in folder/file format but the overrides for Plutonia and TNT will need to be loaded in batch files.  At least that will deal with some of the stuttering and not needing to load batch files for Doom 1 and Doom 2.

Looking forward to see this artist's next releases! I use the wadsmoosh utility for practical reasons, is there a way to make the textures work in this unified wad?

Also don't worry about us fanboys, health comes first! Unless making these awesome artworks for our delight acts as some degree of relaxation therapy :D

Best wishes from Brazil!

My PC is healthy and I am almost ready to get back to work.  sadly luck is not on my side and I have a severe kidney, prostate and bladder infection and am in constant pain even Oxycodone + Fentanyl can't relive, am feverish and so fatigued most of the day I am flat on my back. I have been in an out of the ER and am currently resting for 10 days at an Air BNB beach house with 24hour support in case my health declines any further.  I hope to heal with these strong antibiotics and get back to making textures but have to use PSCC2019 until I have the funds for a Filter Forge 9.0 pro Upgrade as PSCC2020 won't recognize Filter Forge 8 Pro as a filter.

The project almost died, because I, myself nearly died. I spent several days in a hospital ward, on IV antibiotics and morphine, because when I was taken to Noarlunga Hospital to have my bladder drained they took bloods and found my kidneys had gone septic and the bacteria was present in my bloodstream, so I had to be transferred to Flinders Hospital as I was too sick for Noarlunga to keep me alive. If I had delayed getting my bladder drained for 1 more day I would have died that night or early the next morning. my CRP (C Reactive Proteins) should have been less than 3 and was nearly 300. Add to that the blood in my urine and my insane white blood cell count. I got discharged on March the 3rd, and my first night in Flinders was in a resuscitation room with enough room for a team to save me if I crashed, which was an expectation, due to the septicaemia. My kidneys have been diagnosed as injured. The renal specialist said one more infection and I will be on dialysis on a transplant list. :'(

While still in pain and fighting off the kidney infection that almost killed me last week, I pushed myself to make one texture to show I'm not giving up on this pack. it's a redesign of my older Star Grate texture, with the metal look instead of the original concrete look. It will be a while before I get the whole set redesigned as I am still very unwell and under doctors orders not to push myself.

That sucks man; Haemodialysis consumed my life for nearly 2 years: 3 days a week 4 hours a day watching your blood being sucked out and fed into a centrifuge isn't fun stuff. I hope you dodge the last bullet; work on your strafing, yo. XD

And nice work with the textures.

@hoover1979 I am currently trying to rename textures to work with wadsmoosh Doom Complete.

I have combined the textures into one file, but I noticed that there are textures with the same name within the override files.

I'm aware of why the override files are needed for typical usage. I noticed that certain textures are the same name but are slightly altered.

Spoiler

However, I could not locate the where the wider texture would be used in the Plutonia wad, nor the wadsmoosh Doom Complete wad as a renamed texture.

Are some of these textures not completely necessary? Like the other switch textures?

Also, I noticed some bright-maps don't "line-up" nicely with some of the switches and lights textures. Is there a recommended "pack"?

Or would I have to modify some bright-maps myself?

I love your work and I'm sorry for being "picky," I just like things looking good, I do not intend for this to be "negative."

I'm just a little perfectionist over here...

One last thing, what would some of the new textures you posted here have to be named as to work?^^

Any advice on these matters is appreciated!

And keep on doing your best, keep fightin'!

Rip and tear I mean- Rest and repair! :D

I can't get the Plutonia and TNT overrides to be in one textures folder either.  I managed to do it for the doom 1 and 2 overrides and running from a TEXTURES folder is smoother and doesn't have the performance issues of PK3, plus PK3 files have a 2.0Gb max so it's not viable.  The brightmaps are for the original textures, you will need to delete them so they don't interfere with my textures.  I have not made any brightmaps as of yet.

@hoover1979 How do I load textures from a folder? I thought I had to use a PK3 to load any textures...

EDIT: I figured it out, didn't know it was so easy. "-file mydirectory" The performance is night and day difference; 99% less stuttering!
