How many WADs have you played?

I also did that, even with Maximum Doom :)

I don't play wads. I perform a great number of exhaustive test runs across a wide variety of Doom community user-generated content, as an essential part of developing the next generation of classic Doom-based engines and related tools. You think I have time to merely "play wads"? Now if you'll excuse me I have to get back to my wad backlog. These test runs won't perform themselves!

Spoiler

I just checked my wads folder, there's at least 200 wads in it. 10 of which are my own and 10 are patches for some wads. Also I've deleted a couple shitty ones (except my own).

I only got into Doom like a year or two ago, because of Quake and Half-Life.

EDIT: Oh yeah, 13 are iwads.

Hehe. In all seriousness though, I've probably played over 700 WADs (1000+ maps) in the past 24 years. ;D

Sometimes it makes me a little envious to think of all those veteran players who were born in the right year to feel the revolution of video games in the flesh. How many things have happened in those years and all the opportunities to try and contribute. How incredible.

Having lived through it and being just old enough to enjoy those times, everything's felt downhill ever since.  It was truly another world, with rows of store shelves bursting with big-box retail releases of games, something like half or a quarter of them being bizarre one-off experiments, or just revelry in the bizarre and absurd.  Users were expected to acquaint themselves with their hardware and software, hierarchy was law, and form followed function.  Then the 2000s happened..

At least systems are generally far more reliable and a little bit more secure, these days.  Also nice that games are so insanely cheap now, too (as long as you're willing to wait.)  Those rows and rows of boxes were often massive clusters of $60 bombs.  What a time, though.

As far as WADs played, I have no idea.  I remember playing stuff off D!Zone and the cd that came with Secrets of the 3D Game Programming Gurus (as well as 3D Game Alchemy, hope I got the titles right) back in the day, as well as random bursts of wads throughout the 2000s.  Probably few in comparison to other longtime players.  I've probably 'played' 300~400 wads total, but prior to the mid 2000s or so that was mostly dicking around as opposed to properly playing and beating mapsets.  As far as megawads go, I've beaten Memento Mori 1 & 2, Icarus, Eternal Doom, Requiem, DTWID, JPCP, Temple of the Lizardmen 1-3 (do these count? guessing not), Zone 300, Demonfear, STRAIN, and some beta/release candidate for Switcharoom.  I wish 'Superwads' were more of a thing. I'd prefer more 16~ map wad compilations to full megawads.

Edit:

Always wondered, does anyone else remember seeing screenshots for some partial/total conversion called Justice Quest (I think) back in the day?  I remember seeing a promo image for it back on Compuserv with edited ninja/mortal kombat-looking former humans and never saw/heard of it ever again.  I remember one or two Quake projects that have utterly vanished, as well.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say 5000. That's if you don't count ones where I've only watched demos or tested demos for playback. Could be more.

It's all been downhill since Phoenix and Battlezone. I think Defender was where it started to go wrong.

Eh, I'd take just about any Raizing pcb over any of those.  That Defender had a button to invert your ship's horizontal orientation killed it for me.

My zan wad folder has 980 wads and doom\zdoom have close to 100, All of them got cleaned several times before so I'd say +2k wads. I don't even remember most of them and confuse them with each other especially names, which really sucks and leads to a lot of "oh I played this before.. oh don't think so" over and over.

I downloaded WADs from reading The /newstuff Chronicles(not all of every entries in T/nC just not too shitty/weird ones) , and put them into my main (GZ)DooM directory, with numeric directory name for each WAD/TC/whatever is on an entry.
(I also have mods/WADs/TCs just put on the same/other directories just with other name or something.)

Right now, I just played about 1674/2453(progress just damn slowly as I have shitload of other games want to play), not counts about missing numbers or on sub-directories/other locations, just lost counts. :P

If you're using Windows 8 and later then you won't be see it, at least on stock Windows without other 3rd addons. M$ decided removed that after they using new UI design for 8 and later, and that's why I still stuck at Win7. :|
