How does chocolate doom run compared to doom95, boom. zdoom?

Recommended Posts

I did some testing today with dos vanilla, vanilla under windows, and doom95 on a 486-100.  Vanilla under windows runs 15% slower.  Doom95 at 320x200 vs 640x400 runs 3x faster.  I'd rather use chocolate instead of either of them and get that genuine retro experience (while still using wsad and a mouse)

Chocolate Doom on what, a Win95 machine?

Only because I'd done all my other benchmarks on the same machine.  I was told that a very, very early version of it would work on 95.  Prboom did.

It has been known to run on Windows 95 at least up to version 2.2.1. Probably 2.3.0 would work too but I haven't heard of anyone testing it.

Chocolate 3.0.0 very much won't run since SDL2 requires Windows XP now.

Learn to use the Doom setup tool and novert, and then you can get the genuine retro experience by running the genuine retro executable on the genuine retro hardware, why still using wsad and a mouse.

why

*while - "why still using wsad and a mouse." sounds a bit like a poor English speaker's way to say "Why would you want to still be using wsad and a mouse?", implying the opposite of the intended meaning in context.

I know you don't need grammar lessons, I just wanted to point out the potential misinterpretation of your post's meaning by people who might either need grammar lessons themselves or think that you do.

Please see the FAQ.

I've successfully run it in the past, but recent versions will not run on Win9x, and even when it did run I found it to be buggy and unstable. I don't recommend it.

It's perfectly fine to use a mouse and rebind your keys. That's how we played in the '90s before the source was released.
