Looking for WADs with a visual style similar to Doom 64

Recommended Posts

Hello Doom veterans, new user here and looking for recommendations. Among classic Doom titles, Doom 64 is my favorite and I'd like to play something with similar aesthetics: dark, possibly with new textures, with interesting color choices (even better if there's colored lighting), rich in atmosphere and creepyness.

Among WADs I've played, the one which came the closest was the masterful Back to Saturn X Ep. 1. I also liked UAC Ultra, Valiant and The Ultimate Torment & Torture. Sunlust also has a cool style, although I found some levels too hard for me.

Is there anything similar out there? Even if it's not really close to Doom 64 but it has new textures and an original style it's fine. I'm mainly looking to play levels which deviate from the usual brown/green/grey scheme of the classic levels. Megawads are most welcome but smaller WADs are fine too.

Thanks for any help

This is not so much a doom 64 style wad, but rather a doom 64 wad lol, but you might want to check z0k's complexe16 mod that he was working on a few years ago for Doom64 Ex, it's only 5 maps long since it sadly got abandoned, but what he build was great stuff and i think a lot of people overlooked it.

I haven't played Doom 64 myself, but based on your description of aesthetics, you may like Shadows of the Nightmare Realm

Great suggestion, it's right up my alley! It's precisely the style I was looking for.

By the way, you should really give Doom 64 a shot. It's the most unique among the classic Doom titles, IMO.

I'll be sure to check it out, screenshots look very promising. It's too bad that the Doom 64 modding scene never took off.
