Doom Content from Old PC Games Magazine CDs

Recommended Posts

I have a bunch of CDs from old PC games magazines that I used to buy in the '90s and thought I'd share Doom content from them in the hope that there's some unique stuff in there somewhere. I'll start with a disc from PC Gamer (Australia) that has a couple dozen WADs. I haven't gone through all of them but ALIEN.ZIP possibly has a previously unreleased WAD called Alien Containment Facility - Level 1 (alienc1.wad)...

I used to have a PC Gamer demo disc from the November 2001 PC Gamer magazine but I think this version differs from the versions from US or UK, I don't think there was any Doom content on that disc but maybe some Q3A content.

it's cool to dig through shovelware discs like these :) keep in mind that some '94/'95 stuff might have been submitted to idgames under a different filename, usually starting with DM, or they might have been machine updated from Doom 1 to Doom 2 by a script that drags in all the Doom 1 texture patches. both annoying tropes seem common! apart from that, happy digging

If anyone was wondering, I took the photo of that disc on my pink bedspread lol. That will be my thing from now on. Shortly, I'll post a link to a directory listing of that entire disc and if it's not too off topic I'll provide the same for discs that I don't think have any Doom content. I'd be happy to upload any content for any game featured on the discs really - just PM me with any requests.

Edit: Directory listing added to the OP. :)

Please upload the ISOs to archive.org. People there are collecting old magazine cover discs and shovelware CDs and will appreciate your contribution.

Seconded, and if you want any help, please just ask. What OS do you use? I recommend using GNU ddrescue to image the disc, since it generates a nice log that proves the imaging process was good (or, lets you know exactly which blocks could not be read - you can then figure out which files are corrupted in that situation using my tool badiso)

I try to put the ddrescue log files up with the ISOs when I do it, e.g.

There is actually a "PC Gamer" sub collection, but they only have one disc for 1994 and I don't think it's yours

The PC Home one they don't seem to have.

Winblows 10

Well, I signed up to archive.org and uploaded that PC Home disc as an ISO and also the files compressed with 7-Zip, which can be downloaded here:

That disc also had some Heretic content if anyone was interested. I'll do some more discs in the coming days. Any tips or suggestions for these uploads are welcome. :)
