Can WADs be renamed?

Recommended Posts

Depends. What kind of WAD?

If it's a PWAD (a user-made level) there's no problem at all. Otherwise, yes.

I'd like to ask WHY you're renaming WADs?

You can rename any and all wads, they're just files at the end of the day and no dependencies are formed around their filename (except in niche examples which execute via a BAT file, such as old 90's total conversions). The only WADs that really should not be renamed is your IWADs, such as doom.wad, doom2.wad, etc etc.

If you're renaming WADs for the sake of putting the project's full name in the filename, you'd be better off putting them in an appropriately named folder, not renaming all the WADs. Alternately, you could download any one of the few "Doom Launchers" that are around which can make WAD organization very easy.

Technically, you can do that for doom.wad, doom2.wad, and the other IWADs and have them run, but that's only if you decide to set the -iwad command at the command prompt for your sourceport of choice.

If you rename any of the IWADs, and just click on the GZdoom or Chocolate Doom executable icons (for example), the game will still look for those IWADs as originally named and then it'll give you an error message.

If you run the IWADs in DOS, then Doom and Doom2 will expect the IWAD file names to be doom.wad and doom2.wad, or they will not run at all.
