It is detailed, but too much... Seriously... It's bad for gameplay.x
Kingpin3
Exellent new detailed version of Episode 1x

Stunning visuals, even for Boom (no overdetailing). But yeah, sometimes gameplay is kinda boring, expecially after I beaten prcp.wad. Anyway this wad is worth to play. (3/5)x

Incredible level design.x

whoa, this is a fine example of graphics over gameplay, so much that it is bad. the architechture is indeed wonderful, but gameplay is almost sacrificed at it's hand. so many voodoo gimmicks, sometimes monsters don't teleport in properly. worst is the number of inescapable damaging pits, even the first map has them. 2/5.x

Amazingly details levels. Too bad I gave up when I couldn't find any keys on the first. - The Big Robbx

This has got to be the best episode replacement since KDiZD!x

Not the most enjoyable WAD I've played gameplay-wise, but it's worth playing just for the sheer level of detail within the levels. The visual work here is admirable and inspiring. It proves just how impressive the Doom engine can be in the hands of some people.x

Damn fun. :) 5/5 -Nemsx

Great build low amounts of monsters bad fights scarce ambushes x

As others have said, the gameplay needs a little tightening in places. The difficulty bounces about like a hyperactive ten year old frog on steroids and the maps are a bit too large. With frequent backtracking being a necessity, they can often outstay their welcome. However the mod excels in terms of attention to detail and atmosphere, with great lighting, beautiful faux 3D floors and tight texture work. Overall a well deserved 4 stars.x

i hate that.x

a must have: this is good dope man keep it up!x

P:AR is a very clever mapset, with gorgeous environments, lots of technical tricks and impressive functionality. You'd be hard-pressed to believe it isn't a ZDoom mod, when playing in ZDoom. Later levels are also quite fun to play, but the train level and before I'd say were more style over substance. SubP:AR, which is a good pun if ever I saw one, is definitely to a lower quality but I would point out that it is kind of fun. Anyway, ignoring SubP:AR - 4* -Phobusx

I like how the levels actually represent what they're supposed to be.x

The precursor to KDiZD. Except better. Not as good as the original Knee-Deep but than again what is? 4/5x

Pretty fucking awesome mapset. Too bad you can't play this in coop mode. Oh well.x
Anonymous
Really good. Doesn't play quite as well as Caverns of Darkness but looks even better, and it's still a fun game anyways.x

This is the real "knee-deep in zdoom" or it should rather be called knee-deep in boom or MBF. This is the real reimagining of Doom's first episode, and it is actually fun to play.x

I have a hard time rating this because, although the level of detail is certainly impressive, it doesn't actually look that consistently good to me. I just don't think this style of detailing really lends itself well to Doom. Clearly a spectacular amount of effort put into it though.x

extensive leveldesign overshadows some level of Half-life.x

Great job, I only had a couple of gripes: Could have had more monsters, some of the secrets were too difficult to find, maybe a bit too much detail in places. 5/5 anyway.x

Lutz still sets the benchmark for details and architecture. he must have devoted his life to some of these visuals... amazing structures, moving gears and bridges, etc. if you just try to play through these levels normally though you will probably never see them, as navigation is an extreme headache and it will take you two hours to find the first blue key. Also Health and Ammo seem to be lacking. Thank god for the walkthrough and IDDQD IDFA IDBEHOLDA. 5/5 for sure, even if it's not the most playable.x

This is amazing. The vehicles, though unmovable are awesome. x

The detailing is unquestionably awesome, and I found the gameplay to be good enough. 5/5x

amazing looking levels. best played with IDDQD and IDBEHOLDAx

yeh this map set is pretty visual i like the ideas behind some the new map textures and i would play a megawad map set including this detail 5/5! on the subject the brotherhood of ruin is also a pretty visual map set with an ancient temple theme which reminded me of hexen 2 but the ulitmate torment & torture i am told really is the eye candy many doomers have been looking i intend to play through it when i get a computer then can render gzdoom better! 5/5!x

^^^ sorry, I guess I was too harsh to say it ruined the maps for me. I was frustrated to have to hide from the hitscanners at the start of each map, like a vampire hiding from the sun, since a couple shots can take you down to almost no health. But it turned out to be a different kind of gameplay and that was cool. Still 5/5x

Starting with 55 health totally sucks when playing each map from a pistol start. It ruined these amazing maps for me. But I have to give 5/5 because the maps are beyond amazing.x

An amazing showcase of impressive Boom tricks and great architecture. The Gothictx stuff looks really weird and out-of-place though.x

5 stars, for all the deatiling effort, although I must admit that the actual playthrough was a bit much for me as the levels are, well, hard to navigate, and the also unlike COD, which felt more complete and integrated, this one is a bit showy for my tastes, lets just say that detailing is a bit overkill, that's all. For lovers of beautiful architecture. -TeH NeXuSx

The level remakes would have played more enjoyably and looked a good degree better had the author made more texture/flat changes and less sector/vector based ones. Many effects look somewhat ugly or flaky and/or make navigation tiresome. Still, it was an experiment and evidently quite an effort in craftsmanship. The Gothic parts at the end actually look mostly better because they don't strive so painfully for realism. [3/5] ~Chain Mail (11/2007)x

Great wad. Very detailed. i love it with Risen3D I can't find the blue key in E1M1.x
Anonymous
This not that great. I'm sorry guys but I don't see how this is that great. The levels are well detailed, yes... but the levels are much too large and the gameplay is nothing to talk about. Good details, but the gameplay is severely lacking. 3/5. x

While the gameplay is somewhat lacking, the level of detail is extremely impressive, and the mapper managed to do things with faux 3D floors that would leave true 3D floors staring at the ground in shame. 4/5x

This is absolutley Amazing, get it now! A rating of 5 Stars. -PCx

The levels are great. I can remember along time ago when I first played this i was amazed at the detail, and i still am. The only reason you start at reduced health is simple, you just crashed and climbed out of a crater in the ground. 5/5x

i just typed iddqd at the start and launched that in glboom.exe great! i've never seen that deep atmosphere anywhere but here, gameplay cool too. detailing is something that made my edmap crash :p 5/5 for everything, was a bit worried when didn't find other episodes here.x

A very good episode 1 replacement, detail is totally uber. If Doom could handle this sort of detail back in 1993, it would be even more t3h p4wn and t3h h4x. Doom's (lack of) monster variety hurts it a bit, but otherwise it's about the best you can get for "classic" Doom E1 gameplay. I found myself staring at the details for too long :-p 5/5x

5/5 This wad is going down in history and my most played list. Detail is above top notch. Gameplay rockz my sockz. x

Very detailed, annoying. I kept getting stuck on walls or lost; seems more like an exercise in complexity than an entertainment.x

This has to be the most detailed wad that I've ever played. But Doom graphics are not the prettiest and therefore making the levels extremely detailed is a waste of time. Is it the most atmospheric? No. 3057hub1 is more atmospheric for example. Does it have superb gameplay? Well I got lost in the first 3 levels and I fell of the train several times because of the extremely narrow routes. That wasn't fun. Anyway I commend the author for such an incredible effort. 4 Stars --- Starburst.x

OMG, why do I start with 55 health everytime I play this wad? I need this ported to Doom 2 and that's my only problem. One of the greatest Doom maps, man I hear about this alot. I will still give it 5/5 stars though. Rating: 5.0/5.0x

E1M5 and E1M6 are some of the best looking maps I have ever seen. 5/5 detail, 4/5 gameplay (the Barons in E1M2 and E1M3 are somewhat annoying when you only have the shotgun to kill them) - Belialx

Ihnore the desireful gameply in the last review!! Okay, so I will admit that the gameplay is not the best of any wad, but it's still good. Only suggested improvement is a tinse more work on GP. But the play is still fun. RECOMMENDED!!x

Ultradetailed environments and very nice architecture, possibly the best ever! Gameplay leaves something to be desired...x
