Erik Alm is a genius. rsx
Northern_fluff_bunny
Up until the green jungle levels this was awesome as shit and really enjoyable. It was difficult but didn't feel uninspired or tedious. Saddly, things change. Latter levels are full of revenants and 'slaughter' gameplay. Tons of revenants, running around in circles and in general just tedious as fuck. Some call this wad legendary. I call it okay, mainly because I think consistency is part of good design with any level set and this certainly isnt consistent. x

Powerful gameplay similar to the first, now with great detail and consistent themes!x

2/3rds high quality gameplay and 1/3rd stupid revenant spam. Just like the first Scythe it falls apart in the last 10 levels with innovative run around like an idiot spamming the BFG gameplay.x

HOLY SHIT I COULDNT EVEN BEAT THE LAST LVL GG GOOD WADx

One of the best mapsets ever. Its a shame the last handful of maps degenerates into so much near-unplayable stupidity as the level design, especially in the "jungle hell temple" maps, is both striking and original. Hope you like irritating Revenant trap spam. x

I haven't had that much fun for a long time...and I've played a fair amount of wads in my life. Erik knows what he's doing. Enemy placement is fantastic and the atmosphere is unique. The last few maps are a real challenge. 5/5x

One of the best custom wads is "Scythe 2"!x

Great follow-up to the original. Fun combat, great architecture and map flow. Unfortunately, just like in the original Scythe, the later maps take a turn towards a more hardcore slaughter-map style which doesn't sit well with me. (Also, couldn't find the RL on MAP27.) Still, the earlier maps are excellent. x

Scythe 2 is just as awesome in 2014 as when it released. Maps are varied but all fun and great to look at, and some really quite unique. Scythe 2 has probably been my #1 source of mapping inspiration since it came out and likely will continue to be. Scythe 2 has it all, legendary indeed. 5/5x

This wad is unfortunately overrated. The first six levels are great, but then the next six begins with stupid lack of ammo.x

Alright, this is seriously on the number one spot of best WADs ever for me. The gameplay is crazy and gradually gets harder and harder. The amount of detail and layout is insane and I so wish I had this super creativity with mapping like this author has. My most favorite maps are 8, 12, 14, 17, 25, 27 and map16 scared the living shit out of me. But then again, there was not one map I didn't like. I also loved that modified Afrit which adds even more to the difficulty. Just...pure awesomeness.x

Not as good as fun to play as Scythe. But it's pretty fucking close. 4.9/5x

One of the best wads ever created (along with AV, Eternal, Memento Mori 1-2 and Claustro' 1024), sadly it turns into a nauseating slaughter-fest after those green ivy-covered levels and it's not too much fun. Makes HR look like a walk in the park. Still, 4.5/5x

This one never gets old. To me, it stands out as the canon against which any level design attempt should be compared, in every aspect: architecture, detail, gameplay, difficulty, atmosphere. Five Out Of Five. --rslx

The only possible controversial parts here are the turn to slaughterfest maps in the home stretch and the sometimes-annoying Plasma Marines that appear later on. Some will not mind either; others may mind both. The first 20-22 levels, aside from one or two (09 and 16 perhaps), should be just about a universal pleaser. I even enjoyed the slaughtery end myself. The super secret level is great and even if it goes to a BFG fest much of the time it's really what ID should have done for Warrens IMO. 5/5x

wow, this was really fun. i thought my doom binge had come and gone until i started this wad, totally addicting and super awesome to play on brutal doom. i got a couple speed runs on ultra violence on the first try without ever having played the level before which makes this noob happy xDx

I wanted to like this wad more, but starting at level 23 it goes into that "slaughter" or whatever style that I am not into at all. The creator also seems to have some strange love affair with revenants, as there seems to be five of them around every corner. The architecture is great throughout. The first 22 levels are challenging and great to play, it's just a shame that the rest are so frustrating and disappointing. Scythe 1 might be more to my liking. Oh yeah, and fuck those stupid marine enemies. 3/5x

Love this wad. Possibly even better than the original Scythe. Map27 = Best Doom music ever. Sounds like freakin' Keith Emerson!x

It's good. Brilliant layouts, challenging and exciting. I still prefer the original. I don't like the Egyptian themes though- nonetheless, great/ 4/5x

Great wad introducing some extra ideas like some new monsters which really work well and an interesting level progression, which has been copied in many other wads (eg Vanguard). Simply put this is excellent and worthy sequel. Is it better than the first is pretty much peoples own preferences though I think it is.....just. 5 stars.x

Pure awesomeness! THIS is how a real WAD should be like. The maps are fantastic, graphics are top-notch, pure eye candy. And there are new monsters too - you don't often see that kind of thing in most WADs. The only downside is that it becomes incredibly hard, almost unplayable towards the end, much like its predecessor or Hell Revealed. But aside from that, it's perfect. The fact it was made by one person makes it even more honourable. It's like Quake on crack, recommended! 5/5x
Anonymous
Looks amazing, but sadly becomes average to play. The later maps are tedious works of holding down 'fire' and taking obscene numbers of Cell Packs/Megaspheres. One of the WADs responsible for the now-standard style of making something 'challenging' by adding a load of enemy/ammo spam, instead of being creative or unique by rationing supplies and featuring decent traps. Because fuck interesting and fun gameplay, we'll toss a BFG9000 and 20,000 ammo among a few thousand monsters at a time, several times.x

I enjoyed playing through this, the overall design/gameplay was extremely awesome. =]x

Very nice mapset. The episode seperation is a great idea, as it allows for variety and consistency at the same time. Level designs are overall well done. Highly Recommended However, I have 2 problems with this mapset. 1, the new enemies were very unfair and fucking annoying >_>. and 2, the majority of the last 8 or so levels went a little bit over the top with the difficulty. Pretty much after completing the first four eps on UV, I recommend switching to HMP for the last two. x

Awesome megawad - the variety of scenery and the design of levels is gorgeous. Manages to be hard and challenging without falling down to almost-unplayable-HR 2 style, if not for the "version 2" added levels. 5* anyway -- rslx

Top 10 best megawads everx
Anonymous
Another disappointment. It turned out to be worse than its predecessor. Sure, it's got some great new graphics and the gothic medieval and Egyptian maps were fantastic, but that's the best thing I can say about this WAD. I don't like it when the later maps are all about collecting tons of cellpacks/megasphere s and blasting endless hordes of revenants/hellknight s/mancubi with the BFG, and I HATED those evil marines with a passion! I'll stick with the first Scythe, sorry. 3/5x

I was VERY happy when I learned that Scythe 2 is finally completed. The final 3 levels were certainly worth the wait. As a whole, the megaWAD is an amazing experience and a must-play for every reall DooMer! 5/5 :)x
Anonymous
Certainly one of the greatest mapsets ever made. The last 3 are awesome, so it's nice that erik got some inspiration to finish them. The wad is also chock full of legendary music selections. Even though I haven't played every single map, I'm not going to let it just sit on my HD and gather dust; I will finish those maps soon.x
Anonymous
^ Be challenging does not make it boring. Just the opposite, easy maps do Doom boring. Do you know that there are skill levels? When someone cant't finish a wad on UV say that the wad is insane, or boring. Skill levels are designed for every kind of people, but people dont want to say they cant finish a map in UV. 6/5 for the best balanced megawad all times.x
Anonymous
I found it boring. Sure the architecture is pretty striking, but there are better. I found the levels to be repetitive in both gameplay and visuals, and the last levels were insane. I really never liked playing a level during more than battling 1000+ enemies with all I've got just to find out the next level is just the same. It's just tiring, not entertaining.x

Mediocre gameplay, not half as cool as the first Scythe. But I guess that's the price you have to pay for putting all that pointless detail into maps? x
Anonymous
Flawless, if you don't mind a challenge.x
Anonymous
I liked this more than scythe1. The only thing I don't like about both Scythes is that the last 10 levels are always fucking stupid. I personally don't care for running around like a maniac firing my bfg, running after cell charges, and loading and saving constantly, only to be cornered by some ridiculous amounts of barons of hell or revenants. Like c'mon. You have to keep it more interesting than that. Level design+detail is always good but the maps past map20 are always a waste of space. Still 5*x
Anonymous
A stylish, violent sequel to one of the best WADs of all time, Scythe 2 explores six different themes, neatly organized in 5-map episodes. The maps are generally bigger and far more difficult than in Scythe, which effects a different playing experience than its predecessor did (UV is not for casual players, beware!). Even so, the gameplay is highly addictive and everything looks gorgeous. Though I could've done without the new monsters this is nothing short of legendary. Highly recommended. --5/5x

I like it a bit better than Scythe 1, but...it's still not that great. I mean, it gets better towards the end, but, overall, there's something about the gameplay or design or whatever that doesn't grab my attention. It feels...very stale almost all the time, and I've played a lot of WADs. 3/5x

To the person who had trouble exiting level 25: you are supposed to do a suicide exit by aiming your rocket launcher at a close-up wall and shooting at it while you are about to backpedal, killing yourself and eventually sliding into the exit. Anyways, awesome wad.x

The only thing preventing me from giving this a 5/5 is how ball-busting getting to the secret exit in map31 is. (speedrunning + evil marines = dick move, Alm.)x

The last three levels are among the best I've seen. The time Erik had to think about what he wanted to do with them really shows. 5/5 (Surprisingly, MAP30's music is underwhelming despite how careful Scythe 2 was with its selections. Try IDMUS28, that song suits the level a lot more!)x

THIS WAD HAS OFFICIALLY MADE ME PARANOID! I can't play any doom level now without looking all around me and checking every single little corner before touching a key or a switch. and everytime i do i spin 360 to look for a trap i might have triggered. I was expecting something roughly medium difficulty, and up until the 20s i got it. I started noticing a trend toward the end, namely "This guy likes revenants. A LOT of revenants." Be prepared to have no fun fighting the plasma marines. Aside from that, this wad is really, really good. Looks great, plays great. The author really made the map flow loop around the level, which is pretty neat. 4 out of 5x
Anonymous
First off, this wad is amazing. I like how there are so many themes because of the 5-level mini-episodes, though I started to dislike the levels after level 20. Second, this wad is MONSTROUSLY hard. I can't believe I beat it on HMP! (Albeit with a low kill count on some levels) Third off, where can I get the last 3 levels? Fourth: Don't take another three years to finish Scythe X, because 3 years wait for 10 levels is a tad long, don't you think? Last: 5/5x
Anonymous
it was a lot of fun to play until map 20. after that, i lost taste in it. too many monsters for me. 4/5x
Anonymous
Great maps up to the point it simply gets unfair. Hardcore/HR gameplay is fine and I consider myself to be an expert player. However, in the later maps, the player just have to rely on luck, wich is an absolute no-go IMO. Take that one part map25 for example: The area closes as soon as you enter it, you flip a switch and suddenly are sorrounded by revenants, CHAINGUNNERS and there're a few of those uber-marines as well. Again, hard gameplay is fine, but this is just ridiculous... Still 4/5x

About the exits with sector height 48, did it never occur to you people to shoot a rocket against the opposite wall? You have to kill yourself with a rocket to slide through the gap to the exit!x

OMG download now. So perfect. Later levels are a new standard on doom difficultyx

I loved the final maps. I played on HMP knowing to expect hell, and boy did I get, but the maps were fair and well designed throughout, and of course always surprising and unexpected. I'm finally getting the hang of how to kill the red barons and plasma marines (sort of). Making a criticism is hard, but what I can think of is that while the hard levels were appropriately hard and hectic the medium difficulty levels didnt flow as smoothly for their level of difficulty. Anyway, congrats on finishing Scythe2!x

Some absolutely stunning maps in here. This is just as good as Scythe, but for different reasons. The difficulty is reasonable up until MAP23, when it suddenly shoots up to near ridiculousness. MAP27 is maybe my favorite map ever. 5/5x
Anonymous
this had to be the BEST... may i edit to make the stage possible in map 25? hmm... nice!x

I'd love that the last hub was complete. Levels 20 to 27 are INSANE. HR difficulty. Beginning level 26 with a pistol is almost impossible, even for hardcore gamers. There is one problem, in that you can begin level 16 with all your weapons if you go to the secret levels, unless that's how it should be. These flaws don't affect it though. There is NO bad level in this megawad. 5/5 --- Talvix

I loved Scythe, but it wasn't nearly as epic as this is. Forgotten City is impossible to finish without doing idclip at the very end, but other than that and the missing level bullshit this is absolutely impeccable. 6/5x

A classic hard MW. Don't let the innocent gameplay early on fool you, it'll become merciless as you'll climb up to the last 2 episodes. Scythe didn't impress me, if you didn't like it, forget it, this one is a completely different levelset. I also liked the changes in layout to prevent the boredom. My fav was the final map in hell with it's epic feel and grand battles. Pure dooming. 5/5 -TeH NeXuSx

Another awesome wad, even though it is missing 3 maps. Gnerally more medium-large levels than the original Scythe but still some small ones. Like the original, all maps look and play great (and as mentioned the average map size is bigger) even though the last couple maps are REALLY hard. There are also far more custom textures in this wad than in Scythe I, and each episode (5 maps, except the final episode which is Map26-27) has a unique and well done theme. The secret levels are cool too. 5/5x

I don't see how you can call any of the maps here 'ugly'. Erik is one of the most skilled mappers in making beautiful architecture, without having to add pointlessly silly overdetailing to cover up otherwise bland design. This can't get anything but 5/5x

Amazing!I never review a set untill I finish it, but here i'll make an exeption.I'm on map 5 and what waited for me right away was a sweeping chapel area that is among the prettiest i've seen in doom maps.If you, like me did not particularly enjoy Scythe, you can forget about that megawad right away as this is just a completely different story.I'm sure when I finish it it'll be among the classic megawads in my book.x

Started out as a very excellent Megawad, after about map07, it was all downhill... gameplay wise. These levels get so ridiculously stupid; expect to have cyberdemons teleporting behind you at a seemingly empty exit, or immediately killing you from behind when you start a new level. Map28 had the best gameplay of all the levels in this series. 3/5 for effort, and purdy looking graphics. Gameplay way harder than AV, near impossible in some spots.x
Anonymous
Good megawad: I like the progression between the different themes. Started out a bit easy. The middle bits are the best. The later sections (some of the green vine stuff) isn't much fun: invuln + archie battles are boring imho. Well done Eric!x

Well, 79 votes including this and still a full 5 stars. One of only a limited number of good 2005 megawads. 1024.wad, ksutra.wad, and sci2.wad (although this has only 20 SP levels) are the only other good megawads I can think of from 2005. So make sure you play this masterpiece. Also, let me know if I missed other good megawads from this year (BTW, a wad must replace at least half of the game it is for for me to consider it a megawad.)x

You've done it again, sir. The only detracctor for this MegaWAD was that it was not finished (it ended at MAP27 abruptly). It will not take a star away -- The detail is great, the battles are geat, and the episode system is wickedly cool, too. 5 out of 5. -prdarkfoxx

Excellent work throughout. I loved the last 5 levels or so very much, lots of intense action. This megawad gave very good amounts of challenge and thinking. One could notice that the author had used a lot of time on each level and on planning the fights. It was a very good idea to split the megawad into smaller episodes. Very good amounts of detail as well and the final level surely gave a good fight, one of the best there has been for me. :D 5 Stars ***** x

Excellent. Great music, level detail, and the five level episode idea is brilliant. Maps 13, 16, and 20 were especially impressive. But why does every megawad have to end up in hell? I hated those last two levels, but loved most of the rest. The only other issue I had with it was the slight overusage of the "omg 1029301 revenants" trap. There are other ways to make a wad difficult than hordes upon hordes of revenants. 4/5x

Dunno much about technical flaws, but in gameplay department it's one of the best thought and choreographed wads I ever played. Seems like massive amounts of playtesting. Even last, most hardcore levels depend on planning and methodical conquering the map, instead of chaotical gorefest known from other hardcore wads. In many places BFG is used on regular basis, like mere shotgun and it's still challenging, how cool is that? :) Maps are beautiful, flow is great and immersion is here. 1337/5-- Brun Ohnx

The style of Scythe is about heart-pumping action in a detailed and beautiful environment, realism is not a priority. Gameplay is very enjoyable, fast-paced and challenging. Music is really superb. I imagine coop would play brilliantly for this one. Also, I strongly recommend that you lower the difficulty by at least one level when you hit level 24. And there is a surprise or two in store for the Doomer who thinks he's seen it all ^^. 5 Stars. --- Starburst.x

It is a shame this wad was not put through either deepseas or Doombuilders error checker. Inexcusable with new wads like this. There are a number of errors present which could be easily fixed. If it wasn't for these errors I would give it 55. As such 3.85.x

Very good, must say. Very difficult at the end, as the txt said it would be. But i'm dissapointed it ends like that. Build the last 3 and quickly, you have us drooling in anticipationx

I wish I can find the time to play this soon. I don't even remember if I have played the first Scythe before (and I have played a lot of WADs in my life ;). Great places, architecture, shadows, atmosphere. RULER!!!x

Great, fun and detailed maps. It's a pity maps 28, 29, and 30 haven't been finished. Hope Erik completes it someday. 5 stars -soft_haxorzx

Very great wad, but I'm afraid its 3 levels short of a complete megawad. And I ran into a problem at level 25; at the end of level (after the blue key door) I couldn't reach the exit because the gateway was too short me to fit through. I had to use the no clipping cheat to get through. Other than that, the levels were very challenging and enjoyable. The new enemies (especially the red zombie marine) were indeed super deadly. I really enjoyed it. I wish the rest of the megawad gets completed soon.x

I highly enjoyed this wad. Good looking detail that doesn't interfere, challenging gameplay, and an all-around excellent megawad. 5/5 - Kirbyx

Excellent megawad. The detail and challenge was superb. The two new monsters were extremely deadly (ESPECIALLY the first one you run into; they are FAST). I really liked it. The only shortfall is that megawad is not finished; levels 28. 29 and 30 are not completed yet. I sure hope Erik completes the rest of those levels. Other than that, it was completely worth it to play. I recommend you download it.x

Absolutely excellent wad, one of my favorites. I love how there are so many episodes, each with a different theme. After each 5 levels, the theme changes. Too bad the true hell episode is only 2 levels, but I think Map27 is grand enough for a final map anyway. There's even a remake of an original Scythe map if you find the super secret level. A few maps fell a bit short of the others, but overall these are great levels. Well worth 5 stars. Map27 one of the greatest ever.x

Today (6/10/05) I found out there was a scythe 2. I loved and played the original one so much becuase it was as good as AV at that time. Now, never thinking there would be a sequel since its been so long, here it is. I loved Eriks work before and I still like it today even though his style has slightly altered. A complete, undivided, legendary 5 out of 5. 5/5 ***** x

Clearly 5/5 material, and one of the best wads of recent years. I agree with Belial that it isn't a true sequel to Scythe, and some of the early maps were even a bit disappointing (relatively speaking). Kama Sutra probably edges it out for wad of the year so far, IMO. Being edged out by KS is no disgrace though.x

Even though I liked the original Scythe better. I still think this is a brilliant addon. I was really amazed with the Final Level (27) a huge castle on the edge of hell. All the levels were fairly well designed and the later ones pack some extremley hard challenges (almost Hell Revealed in difficulty). A Recommended Download at must! 5/5. -PCx

This is more of a spiritual successor than a direct sequal for me. Because of that, it is not as good as the original. The detail level, style and gameplay is so far removed from the original and the lack of a true ending because of the missing levels in this release bring the score down. However, it has a charm to it that keeps you coming back for more, just like the original, and the gameplay is tight and enjoyable. Recommended, albeit slightly disappointing sequal. 4/5 stars.x

Great fun! 4/5 - I only give it the 4/5 beacuse scythe 1 is one of my all time fav's, and that'd be damn hard to top otherw ise it'd 5/5. But still, this is a cracking good play. Compared to some of the other, new, more recent megawads, this comes top for me! Damn good job! Adz123 ; ) x

Gameplay is pretty good, detail is great, but still, it's not anything I haven't already seen. It's certainly above average, but like I said, it's really nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking; but it's still hella fun. 4/5 -bardcatx

A departure from Scythe 1, this sequel remains heavily inspired by numerous sources including Quake 1. Many of the designs are wonderful and creative while the weapon and enemy balance is one of the best around. Varied gameplay and scenery makes for one of the best Megawads around today! Scythe 2 truely has something for everyone. 5/5 - Dittoheadx

I liked the original Scythe more. Small and action-packed is the way I like 'em. Hard to call this one a sequel, the style is completely different. Still one of the best wads ever, though Kama Sutra is better IMO (out of the more recent megawads). Erik put much more effort in detailing and surprisingly, it works like a charm. I'd say this is more like AV 2 than Scythe 2. Breaking it down into 5 map episodes is the best idea ever. MAP27 ownz all, best map ever. 5/5 - Belialx
