It's alright. E1 is fine but the later levels have some rather annoying progression. Also, way too many timed secrets where something opens for a few seconds and then closes. The combat is straight up boring with more zero-threat monsters to shoot though than the original Doom.x

This is just...amazing. I can't say much else, really. This is just absolutely brilliant.x

If you showed this to someone who had never seen Doom, they could truly believe this was the original game. Relive the same experience as you did back in 1993, only with larger and more difficult levels. Now, a lot of areas feel a little cramped, but this wad is awesome.x

E1 was incredible in this mapset. Loved it, and it reminded me a lot of the original, without ever feeling like it's copying anything. E2 often feels tedious. The maps are too big given their maze-like structure, and have too many Cacos and Barons. Progression's mediocre. E3's better than E2, but has a silly amount of damaging floors. I had a good time playing the WAD, but other than the stellar E1, this mapset does not live up to its potential at allx

This set is very well designed, very much in homage to the original. I like the progression. The secrets are kind of gimicky and overdone, even when compared to the secret-within-secret s of the original. Otherwise, this is well with a download for anyone who enjoyed Doom 1.x

Great idea and good mapset, but I wasn't keen on most of E1 and E3. I prefer Doom's E1, but in this mapset, E2 seemed better to me (on average). Also, I've played D1 for the first time much later than D2, so that's why nostalgia didn't strike me so much. I feel that this wad is a bit too overrated. Lastly, I think that emulating little design imperfections (unfitting texturing or alignment etc.) in the style of original id mappers wasn't a good move. Still, 4/5, these maps are quality and enjoyable.x

Pure, simple, DOOM fun for all the family. If you don't feel the original DOOM in these maps, then you must be feeling odd!x

A worth to play wad. Many secrets, many space for exploring. E3M7 is the best of E3.x

It brings back the good old level design of the Classic Doom. I got lost, a lot. But still, this is one hell of a map pack. Totally worth the download. This is one of my favorite wads so far.x

The problem with most wads is, They are changing Doom. And in my opinion, Ruining it. Wads like Action Doom make Doom a completely different game. This wad is Doom done RIGHT. Its a return to the classic style. Thank you so much, Various and the other million people credited. I salute you.x

It does feel like a wad made by id, sort of...but very good of old school-like mappack. Only problem in this wad for me is the E3M7 is too maze and not too fun with that, and traps in E3M8 just...oh, fuck them, I just rege-quit due get killed by damage floor on lift after got crushed and only had 10 health left. 4/5x

Really impressed with this level pack. A few rough spots here and there, but other than that it is a very amazing map pack. 4/5, and also going to try out the recently-released follow-up :)x

This Map is Amazing, very good, it feels like the original doom levels!x

If you go into this thinking it's going to be exactly the way id did, you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you are into superb level design with an emphasis on puzzles and secrets, this instant classic definitely delivers all the wonderful tropes and cliches that made DOOM so great in 90's.x

haven't finished it yet, but its great quite reminiscent of the original iwad. Dull start, but then again if e1m1 and e1m2 didn't have the nostalgia working in their favor, i'd probably think the same about them. Also it's harder than the original iwad so that's good too.x

Awesome WAD, especially E1.x

Such a good set of maps. Almost makes me double back on Doom's original levels and think they're not as good as I thought they were compared to these lovely maps.x

5/5 I also don't understand why the music by Mr. Freeze is not part of it, it fits really well imo.x

Will never be as good as the real thing or spark the same memories but if you still enjoy Doom I it's a 99% chance you'll enjoy this. It's pretty much as much of a success as it could be, as I simply don't think it's possible to truly match up to the memories of the original. I think part of why the original has so many memorable levels is simply the fact that it WAS the original, and that's a trait no wad can ever replicate, not to mention it takes lots more to truly make a memorable level now vs then. 5/5x

Pretty good. It almost feels like you're playing the original Doom, and some maps like E2M1 (haven't played much more, though) are damn pretty too. This is an incredible project! Congratulations to the whole team. However, I also found some levels to be dull or somewhat restrictive in the resemblance to the original, and I blatantly disliked E3M8 which resembles little the E3 feel. Still, I find this to be an awesome piece of art. 4/5x

Some of the maps are so akin to vanilla Doom style, that I actually felt nostalgic.x

play the originals insteadx

Very true to who noted it above, the original Doom levels were NOT perfect and thus the fact that this has its imperfections is only consistent with the concept. Really it isn't fair to throw a complaint here if it was something you didn't like in the original either. If you've grown past the originals, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you haven't it should be a fun ride. There is plenty of stuff that's in the original style w/o copying it aspect for aspect, which arguably makes this unique.x
udderdude
Best classic vanilla mapset ever. 5/5!x

Anybody who complains about gameplay problems such as maziness and lack of difficulty, fail to realize that those things existed in the original maps too. It's kind of funny, actually. 4/5 for what it tries to accomplish, even if nostalgia gets in the way of good design decisions.x

I just played this, it was very nostalgic! 5/5x

I very like retro wads. E1 is a solid 5.5. E2&3 are basically great, but imho often too dark and have too much slime/lava, which lowers playability, so 4/5. Overall: 4/5, and a must-play for retro fans.x

Amazing, it really does bring me back to when i first played the Ultimate Doom, It's so good i sometimes forgot that i wasn't playing the original! 5/5 Stars.x

cant wait to play this! hopefully it will be released soon. 5 starsx

I'm playing this currently with DOOM 2 as I don't have full DOOM 1, only shareware, so I went through all episode 1 maps with pistol start and made them without even dying once! They were easy but I actually used RL to kill barons at end instead of shotgun and chaingun. Still a very good wad, it's one of those "vanilla" wads. 5/5x

I understand why people are referring to DTWID as "mazey". The levels are generally way too sprawling, with a distinct lack of visual landmarks. This results in getting lost a lot. Difficulty is low as well, with more emphasis on stylish crap like constantly killing enemies with barrels than on any sort of real challenge. I never once had to use the rocket launcher in E1 and honestly forgot I had it. However, some of the traps and gameplay were pretty creative. 3.5/5.x
Anonymous
Not exactly how id would have done it. The originals arent this mazy. Most maps look alright for the low detail, though. Best map was E2M1 (awesome!!), worst map must be a tossup between E3M3 or E3M6 (terrible!!). Overall decent effort imo, but nothing special 3/5.x
Anonymous
Yeah it's... not very good. I liked the idea but the level design simply isn't memorable or particularly fun. In fact, I think the games were even more maze-like than the originals. Sorry guys. 2/5x

Pretty good megawad. Almost feels like I'm in the 90's again. can't wait for d2twidx

By far the best episodes replacement for Doom. This gets 5 stars.x

I thought the project goal would have been hard enough to pull off with the consistency of a single mapper, tbh, so to have crafted maps this convincingly id with an entire community is pretty damn impressive. It plays well, looks fresh, and has unique intermission maps! Sweet. 5/5 x

^ There will be no sequels to this. BTW 5/5x

Better than most 1990s-era episode replacements, while staying faithful to the originals. A good, modern re-interpretation of The Ultimate DooM.x
Anonymous
Disappointing, doesn't live up to the hype..... take the hype away and hat do you have? Boring lifeless maps. Sorry guys, better luck with DTWID 2x

KDiZD is better than this. Debate m- *Player eats a rocket, wad gets 5 stars.*x

i can do better - 0/5x

Gameplay is simply boring and the design is generic and repetitive. OK, so those were essentially part of the vaunted plan for this wad. While you might say that the goals were achieved well, you could also argue that the goals weren't worth achieving. "Best Doom wad ever?" Come now.x

A must play. 5/5x

I enjoyed playing through this megawad and I get the right nostalgic feeling. The interpics were also great and in the classic style of Doom 1. However I expected something memorable. In whole mapset, I haven't found any map, that gave me a WOW and it can become repetitive after some time. I know, it is great piece of work, but maybe I am not the right audience for this. 4/5 - Damnedx

5/5 Very good wad, felt a lot like Doom. Great job :) Please make a fourth episode ( instead of Doom II ).x

5/5 because I'm a sucker for the classic style, and this pulled it off to the T. x

Absolutely brilliant.x

This is really nostalgic. If you want modern zdoom effects, look elsewhere. This is pretty classic. It's not perfect, but it's still a great experience. I'll give it 4/5.x

Good WAD, some maps are too similar and lookalike (especially E1 maps) but all in all great mapset :D 45x
Anonymous
Good work everyone, that's for all the hardword, especially Xaser, ellmo, esselfortium, and Hellbent. On that note it sure is funny seeing how many people missed the point of the project. x
Anonymous
i liked it. hella easy though and as always not enough use of power weapons. only one cyber and one spiderdemon in the entire megawad, wtf! don't like the concept either, should be called 'doom the way doomworld did'x
Anonymous
Feels a lot like the original, good job on that! However, IMO the maps are getting a little too repetive in the end (2nd half of E2 and 3 in particular). The often mazey layout of the maps works great in Doom, but here it started to annoy me after a while because most of the maps are somewhat larger than their original counterparts and are not always as memorable. I would have appreciated a little more variation in terms of map themes too. Still 4/5x
Anonymous
The maps are competent, but it's a dull and pretentious concept. 3/5x
Anonymous
Yea I agree, this thing doesn't come close to the original DOOM experience. Pacing and progression is nowhere near as good. To me this feels more like a grab bag of 90's PWADS, and certainly not a professional IWAD. 3/5.x
Anonymous
I don't really understand the excitement about this. The maps just seem dull to me, and there have been far more interesting wads that have paid homage to the original id levels. I forced myself to play many of these maps just because of the work that apparently went into this project and because of the praise being heaped upon it, but quit when it started to feel pointless.x
Anonymous
Amazing, and not just because it's nostalgic. Every level in this wad is an absolute blast to play. Very well done. 5/5x

We waited 18 years for a real DOOM megawad and finally got one at last. 5x

A reinvention of a new and modern classic, if that makes any sense. Brought me back to way back when when I used ctrl and space. 5/5 -Acidx

5-star quality wad, without question. This should wash out the aftertaste of all the shitty wads we've endured in the past year. 5/5x

I played Doom since the early 2000s, and this definitely gave me a feeling of utter nostalgia. The things that I particularly liked was that it didn't try too hard very often of going overboard with key/switchhunts and the boss battles were a lot more like actual boss battles augmented with imposing level design for their areas. Only problem was no E4.x
Anonymous
For those who can't get enough of classic pwads imitating the style of the original episodes, this is definitely what you will need to download. It's well done, it's fun, and id would probably also want you to play it. 5/5 - NightFrightx

the best classic megawad everx

5 stars, I think this pretty well succeeded IF you play it without a modern style source port. Even if you don't, or fail to get that ID feeling, I think it's fairly undeniable that there are 27 excellent maps! This, 2002ADO, and NMD would now be the best three Doom I megawads, IMO by far.x
