Played this as part of a trip through Doomworld history. It was pretty good! Holds up today fairly well despite some odd design choices. My only real complaint about the map design is that the last level or two really squeeze the hallways tight together so it feels very claustrophobic. It also ends a bit abruptly. Other than that though, a solid entry into the episode 1 mimic genre.x

Honesly, it's pretty damn good, but the author seems a little too up himself..x

A great fun E1 wad from 1995 that's still fun to play today. Recommended. -TRRobin.x

Regards Cheers! Good maps. Pleasure to play. There are some who say easy. No !!!! This is the normal level of difficulty. Such is the original Doom! No 1000 Hell Barons and 100 cyber demons. In the E1 there were 2 Barons !!! There should be more maps like this. You can play without cheating. No IDDQD. Adamx

For an older PWAD, this is quite fun in terms of gameplay. Design is above average but not overdone like some modern PWADs are. 4/5x

very simple but good wad. 4/5.x

Very good for it's time, the challenge of the wad could have been a bit more as this was far too easy. Layout wise it makes even newer wads looks bad with it's interconnectivity and use of height variation. 4 starsx

Author congratulates himself, so what. Not going to harp there. Layouts and architecture are quite high standards for 1995. Unfortunately, it is _really_ trivially easy. I don't even think the original was this easy. Which means by modern standards, it sinks deeper than the rest in the sea of E1 replacements. 4/5 for the age but I'd really recommend something like CH Retro Episode over this if you're looking for the same overall type of flavor.x

I remember this being better back when I first downloaded it in 2003 but then it was one of first PWADs I played and a lot has changed since. This still scores above average for me because the layout and visuals still hold up and while there is not a lot of a challenge the gameplay is not boring or annoying. 4/5 - puristx

A true DOOM classic to come out of 1995! Deserves 5 stars in my opinion.x

Let me just echo what is about five comments above: it's a wad you should play once. It's tainted with problems, but it's a classic, it isn't horrible, and it puts the vast majority of other stuff through mid-1995 to shame. Sure we had the Serenity trilogy and the TIC wads by then, but acceptable Doom I episodes were still on the tough side to come by, and this is one of them. I don't know what to say at recent comments other than anything below 3/5 is an undeserved disrespect to the classic status.x

I'm sure that this wad was a huge success among Doomers when it came out but I don't think it warrants such high ratings. The architecture is rather complex, with lots of little hallways for you to explore. This leads to situations where you run circles around the maps looking for switches or doors you might have not noticed. Another mistake the author made was placing more ammo around then you'll ever need playing this. It's an okay doom experience aside from those things. 2/5x

This is a decent pack for its time, but I do not agree with the reviews that it is unparalleled. There are plenty of better packs released in 1994, including SUDTIC and TEUTIC. My biggest complaint is the over-abundance of ammo. I used a mod that cut the amount of ammo given in half, and still maxed out every weapon. I don't care how bad of a shot someone is; you would never need that much ammo. It isn't fun when you can win using just rockets and plasma. The maps also get repetitive after a while. 3/5x

this one have lot of success among doomer, in my opinion this wad is just mediocre (but overated) there are better episode 1 replacement that deserves more attention.x

Good stuff, thanks for this. The readme made me cringe, though. There's being proud of your work then there's being arrogant =)x

This won a "retro-Caco" for standing out amidst most of the utter shit released at the time, but it is like E1 in the sense that taxidermy is like an animal. Architectural excerpts have been removed from context and slathered in boring textures. Placement of humanoids and minor powerups could have been done with a random generator; maps increase in size but not difficulty; pulling all switches solves every puzzle. Few technical errors and all those snipers keep you awake, but not actually interested.x

Legendary. So fluid, fast, and most of all FUN. 5/5.x

This literally has got every little detail of E1's style right, short underpopulated maps, lower level monsters throughout, lower level weapons and just enough ammo to survive, low difficulty, simple map layout, and plenty of STARTAN and the like. I think this deserves more than its current 4 star rating simply because it has unanimously succeeded where many others have tried too hard.x

Silly name but it's a timeless classic. Belongs on every Doomers hard drive.x

I never played this one before and I have to say that this was pretty damn fun. Despite its age, it still plays really nice and the level design is simple yet appealing. 5/5 x

Excellent mapset for its time. Mostly quite easy, although I did find myself actually needing some of the health in E1M6 and E1M7 - seems to me that pistol starts would make this a decent challenge sooner. Great to explore and could easily be an official levelset. Loved it! 5*x

4/5 It might as well be Knee Deep in the Dead, for all I care. Well, not E1M8. I'll keep my Phobos Anomaly, thank you. It's really easy, but then again I just came off playing Plutonia on UV, so you be the judge. My only gripes are the super short secret level and the finale. I enjoyed the little cameos of E1 architecture! -KMX E XIIx

One of the greatest E1 replacements ever made. Even with all the new, more detailed and challenging KDitD replacements, I still find Fava Beans to be the closest in style to ID's original episode. 5/5x

Where's the liver and chianti? Anyways, awesome level of the good ol' days! :)x

I am flattered that a number of old school Doomers now see the Fava Beans Episode as classic! If only I could go back and rewrite the text file - I would tone down the self-appraising rhetoric a bit... The levels were fun to make, fun to deathmatch, and way more fun than doing homework! Cheers - SB.x

Well obviously its quite easy but it is an absolute classic! This is still, even today, one of the top E1 retro wads IMO, and it could have easily been made by ID software; in fact, it practically looks as if it was.x

Great for those who play doom on the Ipod. It's not too hard, but that's what's good.x
Anonymous
the map's difficulty is average imo. People need to start playing doom with fast monsters on =px

Hi, I designed Fava Beans. Now-and-then I search the net and find new posts about the epsiode. I'm flattered by how popular it turned out over the years. One comment I see repeatedly is that the levels were too easy. There is a reason: I focused on the architecture and deathmatch playability, not on one-player gameplay. I added sprites only as the last step before level release. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the difficulty! Glad to see people enjoyed the levels anyway. Cheers.x

This was very fun to play. It's simplistic yet atmospheric. The last map was pretty anti-climatic though.x

IMO, the all-time classic Knee Deep replacement. I still play this one for relaxation and appreciation of clever, good-looking design. Everything about this WAD is first-rate except for the low gameplay difficulty. I especially enjoyed secret-searching, and the number of times I saw arenas that I wouldn't actually fight in for awhile. Just ... FUN! 5/5 -- Steve Duffx

great, this wad deserved 5 stars in 1995, in 2006 4/5x

well, i guess its OK. compared with some other wads i've seen, it is not so impressive. yet i live in a world where DooM is virtually gone, i was only in elementary school in the '90s so i never had the chance to see the changing world of doom. Anyone else feel like this?x

This replaces E1M1 and is great fun, although the author comes across as a self-aggrandising twit in his readme ("I insisted that the levels I designed were no less greater than those in the actual game..." he says). He didn't do anything after this. Fava Beans is easy to review; it's a parallel universe version of E1, with some of the same design ideas, but mixed up. It's just slightly cruder than Id's E1, and played today it's not too hard, but it's entertaining and very nostalgic.x

Great for relaxing times. Not hard not baby just straight. Don't collect everything that's the idea. The levels are highly compact, smaller than kneedeepinthedead, but good enough. Only duds are e1m8,e1m9. But good for playing, damn good, so 4. -Ex

The first in the seires of "Knee-deep" imitations by many authors. It pretty much paved the way for episodes like "Dawn of the dead", "Ch retro episode", "Simply phobos" etc. In '95 this was a "state of the art" architecure, and even today it's not without it's merit, though it is a bit too easy, and bit plain today. It just shows how far did the doom mapping go, after all these years. Recommended for all lovers of episode 1.x

This was the first custom WAD I played for Doom.. such as awesome set of maps. A true classic in my book!! Grab it now.. 5/5x

Excellent wad, prolly one of the best in 1995. And it's still much better than most mappers have to offer nowadays. Gameplay is surely on the easy side, but it's very close to the "Id gameplay" because it's highly playable even in Nightmare! skill (like Doom and Doom2 are) Most wads released nowadays are incompatible with Nightmare! skill :( high replayability, fun, a huge classic 5/5 - PerOxydx

Everything that has to be said about this E1-replacement has been said before, I just can repeat: It rocks. Period.x

While the architecture is extremely good, especially for 1995 unfortunatley this level set couldn't hold my intrest because it was simply too easyx

Looks nice enough but WAY too easy. Mainly a set for nostalgia seekers.x

just started playing thid thing today 9/30/03. I think this is a very good wad pak. I am only on the fourth map but the game play is good. It really does look as though ID released this one.x

A brilliant "Knee-Deep In The Dead" replacement. The maps could all have been taken right out of Doom's E1. The gameplay is almost identical, as are the secrets and, sadly, (lack of) difficulty. Still, everything about it is perfected. Author Sean Birkel later contributed to "Memento Mori 2" with a slight modification of one of the maps herein. This is the second best "Knee-Deep"-stylish mapset ever, surpassed only by "Ch Retro". --5/5x

Why does this not have 5/5? The architexture may not be up to todays standards, but for 1995 it is unparalleled. It certainly looks nice enough even now (and a lot better than what some people have to offer today). It may not be hard by today's standards either (largely because it doesn't have the annoying uber-tight ammo placement of contemporary wads), but it is definately fun. It also has that timeless quality called gameplay. Definately legendary and definately worthy of 5 starsx
