I rather play The Bad Castle than that.x
Bad King John
FFS people, stop reviewing this like it's new - it's history. And if you really do want history, play the DOS version on a 486 ($10 from eBay). If you just want the retro feel, then it's Chocolate Doom. Otherwise play PrBoom or ZDoom.x
bzzrak
better than ZDoomx

Doom was actually the first and best game I've ever play'ed x

Best launcher interface, wish more modern ports would emulate the launchers simple elegant design.x

Get Chocolate or PrBoom+ instead. This port was rushed out the door by Microsoft.x

DOOM!!!!!!!!! THAT SAYS IT ALL. SCREW ALL FAULTS AND JUST FOCUS ON CHOPPING UP 'EM MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!x

This is the version of Doom that I played when I was 4. The little differences between this version and the original DOS build tickle my nostalgia bone a bit. Also, this port was headed by gaben the great, so it has that going for it too.x
Anonymous
It's freaking Doom!x
Avoozl
The first ever PC source port of the original Doom I have ever used, before that it was the GBA version.x

Doom 95 was the first version of Doom I've ever played. So many memories :) 5/5x

SonicandTails58
I never had the ability to play Doom in it's pure, bare basic form. This is as close to it as i can get, as my laptop can't run DOS programs, and DOSBox crashes 99.9% of the time when i try to load Doom. 5/5x

I remember having a disc that came with doom95.x

best Source port for Windows 95. ~KiLerZolikax

Never saw the point. The DOS executables run alright under windows9x.x
Doomkid
I started playing PWADS with this and I've been hooked on DooM even more ever since. The sound effects are a slightly lower pitch, but despite it's flaws it's very accurate to DOS Doom/Doom2. ..Nowadays, Just use Zdoom, Zandronum or Zdaemon.x

I disagree with most people. While Doom95 offers a vanilla styled gameplay, it's full of bugs and crashes. I don't recommend this. Instead, I recommend Chocolate Doom. It's the true ultimate alternative to playing original Doom in it's vanilla state! Maybe some of you (like me) have Collector's Edition which (unfortunately) comes with this executable instead of old DOS exes. Don't worry, as I said, get Chocolate Doom! I give 1 star for Doom95 for reasons above. -Doomer95x
Anonymous
^^^wrong! Chocolate Doom is the best vanilla source port! Doom95 sucks because is full of bugs. I have Collector's Edition and Doom95 came with the IWADS instead of old DOS executable files. But don't worry, you can download Chocolate Doom if you want to experience the good old days of playing Doom! I give this source port 3/5.x

If you have trouble running this on Win7-64bit, try renaming "dplayx.dll" in C:WindowsSysWOW6 4 to "dplay.dll."x
Anonymous
didnt work just played musicx
Dragonsbrethren
For many players, *this* is the vanilla executable. It may have some new bugs, but I can't rate it anything but legendary. At the same time, there's really no reason to use this port when vanilla compatible alternatives exist that do everything it does better. Outside of nostalgia, of course.x

Nice. That is all. x

My first Doom experience was on friend's black-and-green crt monitor with win95 and this bad boy, Doom95 on it. Unforgettable thing. Before I learned about other ports, this was the way to play Doom.x

great gamex

I love this game x
Anonymous
It's not the wad, it's the port. The port sucks.x
Anonymous
Downright unforgettable, but obsolete now. When it comes down to the classic keyboard experience, Doom95 deals this in spades (if works that is). You can fix that with a mouse patch nowadays I believe. The Doom95 loading screen is something outta this world. Cyberdemon, bunny, Baron of Hell, Cacodemon, Giant Red Number 95, and yours truly. Haha.. *grumble* 'nuff said. Use something else if you want to record demos.x
Anonymous
Like the Doom Collector's Edition, this will not run on Windows 7. +0 stars for being too antiquated to be useful to anyone who has a PC manufactured in this century.x
Anonymous
I don't care what anyone says, this was what I started with so to me it means a lot, and without it I wouldn't know about the other source ports. Even on it's own it's an excellent alternative to Doom.exe if you don't mind down-pitched sounds or the slight horizontal screen stretching.x
Anonymous
Still one of the best ports of Doom out there.x
Anonymous
this is the best game ever, i was looking for this game for a whileee.. yhanks uux

5 stars! works perfect on windows 7, now thats amazingx

One of my favorite games of all time!x
Anonymous
this is the wad that replaced the original doom.exe engine and subsequently made it unavailable to mainstream distribution. the fact that i cannot have THE ORIGINAL FILES without either trusting that someone's disks still work or that i may find some other means is the sign of only one thing: that this is the scummiest thing to have ever happened to the world of doom... ZERO STARSx
Anonymous
The best port for users who want something that is closer to vanilla doom than chocalate doom but cannot run the original .exe because of a new computer. I also like the frontend with level and game select, except for the fact that you can only load up one custom file when playing.x
Anonymous
Thank you!x

works greatx

This is the port I used ever since my dad introduced me to doom when I was five, up until a few years ago when I found zdoom.x

I love this game its awesome on the best FPS games ever. x

Legends never die my ass!x
Anonymous
This is the port that I use for all my dooming. The only time I don't use it is when the wad requires a more powerful port, like Zdoom. For me, it's the instant level select that sells it for me over vannila Doom. Plus, there's no jury rigging required for advanced computers (although i've heard of Vista having problems with it). All and all, a solid port.x
Anonymous
Frankly I've never had a problem with doom95 and I still use it off and on today. Works good with XP, you just need to disable screen rotation in your graphic properties to get rid of that random flip glitch. 5/5 ~Joe Andersonx

Anonymous
5/5 Better than Chocolate Doom as it is not GPL, but not as great as Zdoom :)x
Anonymous
We all started here, unfortunately we wish to forget it. My USB mouse doesn't support it on XP so that just kills playability and my comp isn't fast enough for DOSBox. I also remember the pain it was on my 98 to try and load multiple PWADs and/or .DEHs. Nowadays a port solves all that. 3 for the nostalgic feel that will never be brought back even in Chocolate Doom, -2 for the horrid native support and crashing from map30 on Doom2.x
Anonymous
Shut up RFNage1. You mac fan-boy loser. This port is excellent. In fact, it would be good if the mouse worked in Windows 2000, and higher.x
Anonymous
Awesome, exept the motion and sound seem slowed down a tad from when I played it all those years ago...x
Anonymous
I grew up with doom95! And when i got interested in it again, i got interested in modern source ports, too, so doom95 helped me into the modern source port world.x

this is the greatest doom tha id games has ever made. i love it. it deserves more than 5 stars. *****x
Anonymous
Im pretty sure quite a few of us (Like me) used this port before discovering other ports. Man....this port is about as close to normal doom you can get on windows.d Definately should be an automatic 5*x
Anonymous
very good game... i love itx
Anonymous
A Win32 version of the original DOOM.EXE but it still has its share of problems the original has, with the exception of a slightly increased visplane limit. There are better ports out there that fix the engine problems. -Mr. Chrisx

I used this for years with the Maximum wad CD before I discovered the Doom ports, it's pretty good even now, although the blur effect screws up with my newer computerx

Ah the memories I have of this. Fond ones too. Doom 2 for Christmas, then Final Doom the following one. Eventually I discovered Icarus Alien Vanguard... then I discovered that there were superior ports out there. but for a pure doom experience without DOS, this is it. 5/5x
Anonymous
Its Doom95. I had to freaking pay for this. it was worth it.x
Anonymous
FUCK YEAH DOOM!x
Anonymous
Very usefull if you want to watch old demos even if PrBoom should play them back NB : This port is out dated But if you like History try it 5/5x
Anonymous
This game is a classic. I remember playing back in the DOS days where consoles were starting to get more and more advanced. But the graphics on this game always made things a winner and a PC is all you need (its your own console) to enjoy a classic gem like this!x
Anonymous
Oh cool!x
Anonymous
The latest Chocolate Doom versions have rendered Doom95 obsolete. Choco is now the best "pure" Doom port, and suffers from none of the extra bugs/quirks present in Doom95. Choco also runs well on a large variety of modern operating systems.x
Anonymous
Doom 95 was pretty good for running Doom natively in MS Windows back in the day (I'm talking '95-96). Modern day computers (anything 2000+) will likely have lots of issues running this smoothly so use something like zdoom (port with lots of new features) or chocolate doom (if you want to get a 'vanilla' DOOM experience) instead. This might have some nostalgic value, but otherwise it's hugely outdated.x
Anonymous
sucks dickx

A truely classic DOOM. Nothin like playin the original DOOM the way it was supposed to be played. 5/5 -r_rrx

Estlib says: I woted 2 stars because i dont care what others say about ports and how bad they are. doom 1 was and always will be the greatest in doom series, it ewen beats doom 3!! :Dx

I remember playing this as part of a Windows 95 Game Demo disc that came with our old computer. Boy, has it been so long? This was the way I played it well into my teens, when I discovered other sourceports. But yeah, if you want the Dos experience, get Chocolate Doom. 5/5 for pure nostalgia.x
Anonymous
Nearly obsolete nowadays, because there are many alternatives and because it was made for Windows 9x but can have issues in more modern releases of Microsoft's monstrosities. (Even id Software reverted to Doom on DOSBox for the recent Steam release.) Regardless, in its native environment it is relatively stable and rather faithful to the DOS version. Plus let's not forget this package includes Knee Deep in the Dead, and not just the Doom95 engine. [4/5] ~Chain Mail (11/2007)x
Anonymous
I thought Doom95 was ok. It comes closer to the original Doom than any other source port I've used, but it still doesn't feel as authentic as just running the original DOS Doom. Also, it won't run most of the PWADs I like. 3/5x
Anonymous
this is varry goodx
Anonymous
Great but I always thought there should be a mode to start DOOM normally without selecting your own level but hey what the hellx
Anonymous
I got this with Final Doom when I bought that, and it was so crappy that I rather played in Dos on low res. 1/5 Kristusx
Anonymous
Yuck. I had this when I got Doom Collector's Edition and hated it until i discovered source ports. I want to puke at the site of seeing this old nightmare again. Though it is useful to have on the site, so I give it a 2/5 instead of none.x
Anonymous
this was the first port i ever used. it was ok. 3/5x
Anonymous
love the first doomx
Anonymous
Vanilla doom for windows, 'nuff said. Too bad that it brings some good things (extra resolution support, demo compatibility, slightly improved engine limits) at the expense of others (no direct FM music support, can't use DEHACKED, choppier frame rate than vanilla doom in any resolution). 4/5x
Anonymous
doom95 is the bestx
Anonymous
godly game, shit port **x
Anonymous
I used it for a while only because it came with my copy of Final Doom, but I prefered the DOS executables anyway (under pure DOS 6.2, of course!). The extra resolution is surely a plus, as is the compatibility with vanilla Doom demos, but for some reason the frame rate appears choppier than it should :-S Also, it screws up MIDI music for some reason, especially on exit.x
Anonymous
Terrible port...I just hate it so much. I'd rather use DOS than this piece of crap that messes with everything. No DOS you say? Zdoom then.x
Anonymous
love the game for years....there wasn't anything better then grabbing a chaincun and mowing down creatures....x

I think this game is a great legendry game because it has made all the other great games evolve and it will always be a legend game. - snoopincx

This game is teh r0xx0rz!x
Anonymous
meh..I never really liked Doom95. The thing I always hated about it is how all the sound effects are inexplicably "slowed down" a tad and there's no option to fix it. And now that there's Chocolate Doom, Doom95 is rendered absolutely useless?!x
Anonymous
great game full of suprises x
Anonymous
Five stars, because by reverse engineering this, entryway was able to emulate the behavior of the DOS exes more closely.x
Anonymous
I voted one star. Why? Simply because I find that porting good old 100% stable DOS apps and games to WinDoZe 9xxxxx sickening. Other than the visplane overflow fix and the ability to play DOOM within a native WinBlows 9x application, nothing beats good old DOS DOOM v1.9, hands down -:) Just my politically incorrect and (I'm sure) unpopular two cents  - RFNagelx
Anonymous
It was revolutionnary and should be rated 5 stars, because it belongs to the legend of Doom!!! - Jivex
Anonymous
This is identical to what you get if you buy The Doom Collectors Edition (minus the PWADs). And how can you knock "pure" Doom? I played many, many Doom games with this before discovering ports and I still play it sometimes like this. If you ever want to play Doom the "original, old-fashioned way", this is a great way to do it. --WinstonSmith6079x
Anonymous
This has to be the ultimate alternative to a pure doom experience with no added features except for the higher screen resolution support. It also doesn't crash when you get visplane overflows and runs fine under windows, of course. Plus it's a doom.exe and doom2.exe both in one. The only setbacks with Doom95 are you cant use dehacked with it, and there is a bug with demo recording (which can be fixed with the demo fix).x
