Meh. Legendary, etc., yet definitely not satisfying for me. 3*x

Of all the classic megawads, hell revealed has got to be the *sorriest*. Hell Revealed is a case in study of bad map design, with most of the levels consisting of either claustrophobic rooms, endless corridors or huge rooms with massive fights ala serious sam. none of these are fun or interesting to play, and they are absolutely UGLY to boot! Worst of all is that this came out after wads like obituary and memento mori had outclassed it in playability, looks and difficulty. What a sorry attempt. 1/5x

One of the worst megawads I've had the displeasure of playing. Ugly level design and boring gameplay. There are much better "hard" megawads that don't waste your time shotgunning Barons. 1/5 for catchy music and influencing significantly better works like AV.x
Nazgul9
Absolutely mind blowing and fully deserving of its legend status, a class of its own even 18 years after its release. Even the simplistic design works in favor of the experience... may not be your cup of tea, but its quality and influence are undeniable. Solid 5!x

A nice wad. The early maps and last couple of maps were weak, but the rest was a fun experience.x

Classic and hard, later maps are great even todayx

i hate this. Too many monsters. dull texture . unimaginative. with teenage boys who like to play on a thousand opponents, and so many . totally inadequate as an intellectual product. What a good career ? UAC Ultra, Phobos2,Earth, Shotgun Symphony, Demon Eclipse1, etc. Hell Revealed a shit .x

The perfect hard map set that is not a slaughter map. I love the gameplay here.x

Still a Godlike level set that holds its own to this day.x

Freakin afterlife sucks!!! U guys like need more cell packs in that damn level. It was harder than post mordum if you ask me. You want like extreme challenge download this wad. It's crazy hardx

Even today, after playing Scythe, Resurgence and Deus Vult, Hell Revealed is still the daddy. Modern slaughtermaps have lost their way; they are just battles against blocks of pop-up monsters. HR.WAD remembers it's still Doom, yet it puts up one hell of a fight. 5* for its impact on the community, for being light years in front of all modern slaughtermaps and for dragging me back again and again, even though I don't even fething like it. I hate slaughterwads!!!x

The toughest megawad I have yet played. I found it harder than Alien Vendetta. But, don't let that discourage you from downloading and playing. This megawad is a right of passage for a true Doom player and it was mostly fun, but some of the levels were pure dick-hole. Dick tested, cock approved!x
Getsu Fune
very hard wad that's more "gameplay over graphics" which is great because design doesn't make a wad what it is. it's very difficult to complete and not for the wimps. plus it's even better to play on coop! HR does indeed epitomize slaughter gameplay at its core.x
Anonymous
Best wad in history, ever... to this date (2014)! Except for HR2 which is *slightly* better but I view the two as one huge monolith of greatness anyway(sorry, got carried away there)... 6/5? Play with Brutal DooM and spend the rest of the weekend wiping blood splatters from your ceiling lolx

A great megawad, I prefer this to HR2. Fun in vanilla settings, doesn't need any extra mods or whatever. In the words of Nathan Explosion, "It's good on it's own."x

Pretty fun and challenging maps. The layouts on a few levels are a little confusing, and some of the secrets are hard to find (maybe I just need to play it some more), but this is a pretty good level pack. Especially fun with Russian Overkill. 4/5x

The hype is well deserved! 10/10x

This is a particularly old Megawad. Roughly 15 years, give or take. That doesn't mean that old is not fun. This particular Megawad doesn't focus as much on design as it does on challenge. However, it still looks great, and offers a challenge in the later levels for Doomie Daredevils. ~Hankx

This wad essentially started the style of gameplay we now call "slaughter". The difference is, this is a lot more balanced than many slaughter wads of today; and retains the classic status it has achieved. The difficulty on UV is quite extreme, but when it is this fun, you will want to continue! This classic deserves the full 5 star treatment. -TRRobin.x
Anonymous
It's very good for its time, but nowadays it simply falls short. The level design is stomped upon and malformed by hordes of poorly placed monsters. Is it really necessary to have so many cyberdemons?x
Anonymous
It's about time I rated this classic, that not only inspired many later wads, but pretty much created a style of extreme difficulty and insane monster counts. Although the architecture may be considered simple by today's standards; what makes HR stand out is that the gameplay matches the difficulty and never lets up throughout. You may want to pull your hair out on some levels, but the addictive gameplay makes you keep coming back for more carnage. It gets a 5/5 from me. x

While the levels may not be the most visually appealing, they're certainly full of creative design quirks. definitely a fun mapset overall.x

Obviously one of the best megawads ever. It's very hard, of course, but if that bugs you, play on a lower skill level. Every fight is actually carefully planned out and fun as hell, even if it might seem impossible at first. Also, the maps are really good-looking and contain the old-school charm that I love so much in WADs. This is a must. 5/5x

shit wad! hard levels, not cool new graphics (except the hud bar, looks good). i give this 1/5 for effort but it could have been 2/5 but i don't care. sorry for people who liked it. for me it's not good as other megawads.x

The most inspiring and important pwad ever. Just look at the vast number of demos that have been recorded for it. People don't spend that long playing a wad and developing strategies for it unless it's something very special.x

Hallways filled with revenants are just plain bullshit. That's not hard, that's just cheap.x
Anonymous
By today's standards, HR is really not that difficult anymore. In my opinion, WADs like Alien Vendetta, Scythe 2, and its very own sequel HR2 managed to surpass this one in terms of toughness. The first 6 levels are quite easy even on HMP, and the whole WAD shouldn't be a problem for any experienced players on the easier difficulty settings. Although HR looks very aged now, it will always be a classic wad, since this is the one that "started it all" back in 1997.x
Anonymous
Aw. This wad has some cool levels, but there are much, much better wads out there. In each level, there are hundreds of monsters, and it's so difficult it makes the wad mediocre and boring to play. It's really TOO HARD. Maybe some other players might say i'm a wuss or a noob or something like that, but i don't care, it's my opinion. Get it only if you want a challenge. 3 stars cuz it has some good levels and cuz i don't to be too harsh. ~Rocky XIII, a French Doomerx

Definitely one of the best WADs ever created. I enjoyed it much better than Alien Vendetta. Yes, HR is extremely hard, nearly impossible at times, even on HMP difficulty, especially for common Doom-players, but otherwise, it's perfect in every way. For Doom veterans, it's a must-play, for average players, it's a great but fun challenge when played on lower difficulties. The gameplay is one of the best I've ever seen in any WAD, and same goes for the music. GO GET IT NOW! 5/5x

This is one of the best I've played. There's plenty of ammo and health around to keep the juices flowing. Puzzles galore, and I sure do wish there were more that are this good. BIG kudos!!x
Anonymous
There is a difference between making something hard and making something infuriatingly annoying and repetetive. Using only the BFG and SSG just to get the many thousands of higher level monsters out of the way of very important 64 unit-wide corridors full of revenants is like a chore. In fact, this has recemented my hatred for revenants and their astronomically unfair homing missiles that can trace you miles into a winding cave. The undodgeable arch-vile turrets suck ass as well.x

^Nah it's the wad that eats nubs alive by making them squeal and call for mommy. Players who deserve being called Doomers enjoy this masterpiece for its high difficulty combined with the need to think and play strategically.x
Anonymous
The kind of levels doomguy himself would make. Sure they arent the best in visuals (but this wad was made in the 90's) but it gets a 5/5 on sheer carnage alone. Playing post mortem with fast monsters kicked my ass, in a good way. What a gread WAD.x
Anonymous
Really, the difficulty is in putting thousands of higher level monsters in thick clumps in places where there is either architecture that restricts your movement or no architecture at all to defend yourself with.x

F***ing hard and f***ing awesome. Play this with score doom and its addon pack and you're set for hours, maybe even days of endless fun and challenges. 10/5 starsx

Gets better as it goes on, true to the fact that Donner and Niv refined their technique the more they mapped. Plus the challenge is INSANE! Play Map24 for insanity's sake... or Map23/26 for the fact that there isn't another vanilla level like either of 'em. Afterlife is one of the best levels I've ever played in my life. Top 10 for sure. This one is all win.x
Anonymous
I realise this is an old wad, but the architecture and detail is far too simplistc. The challenge is great, but every level is just boxes, with almost no surprise or intrigue. Memento mori 2, which i didn't even like that much, I found that more interesting and fun. I usually like all the big megawads made, but this one just doesn't do it for me. 3/5x

Although the first half of the wad involves a lot of boring SSGing of high hit-point demons to death (it's not hard, just tedious), later on you're given a lot more rocket crates and energy cells. But given how old the wad is, it deserves a 5 despite whatever small nitpicking critiques you can make. Truly a classic, and a fun play.x

Hell revealed is the greatest mega-wad ever, not Requium. -SS x
Anonymous
This is dated May 1997. It's a popular vintage megawad, famous for its "never mind the bollocks" design and its brutally hard gameplay. Even by modern standards it's tough. Against it, roughly the first dozen maps are mundane, and the last couple aren't great either; and the traps sometimes absolutely require foreknowledge, leading to a save-die-reload routine that's not to my taste. But when it works - Maps 13-26 inclusive, basically - it's incredible.x
Anonymous
dude this wad is frinkin insane! 18 years old and probably a massive single player of doom and quake the best FPSs in the world mind you lol but yeh the later levels were just mind blowing! i hav finished it now barely...but gonna fire up hell 2 just wish there was a third one coming out anywayz keep up the good work!x

A 5 is an absolute given for this one. What it lacks in atmosphere it certainly makes up with that "actioney" feeling through the maps. Besides, I really kinda doubt that Yonatan Donner designed these things with the atmospheric intent anyway. As I said, sure it's not strong in atmosphere, but it is cetainly fun-as-hell to play. 5/5 -Eisenfaustx

A legendary feature in the doom community, a consept wad that set the terms for alot of wads to come. Open grand scale architecture and a very distinct feel; thanks to features like the memmorable pink syk, the ROTT midi tracks and Donners knack for over the hill gameplay. Creativity mixed with simplicity borderlining cheapness, the Bob Dylan of doom megawads perhaps. A 5/5 in my heart, but it gets a 3/5 on paper. -Johnsenx

Pretty great classic playing. THE wad that inspired it's own style of Doom Playing, anyone who sees an HR-style map is paying tribute to this wad. I managed to survive on UV to Map24 before I had to give up. I should try HR2 again sometime to see how far I can get on UV there before giving up too. Regardless, automatic 5 stars for being legendary.x

For people who solely want to use it as a measure of how many CDs and AVs they can take down, not a problem. But for people who liked the original maps for their creepiness and tension, it's disappointing. Everything is bright, scares are done with numbers not atmosphere. If you die, you physically can't progress with just the pistol. Ok if you just want enemies and no fear, but bear in mind that although nothing succeeds like excess, boredom tends to set in pretty soon after that. 3/5 PS: Kill the musicx

Well, if you are asking about good hard Doom megawads, this one is surely one of the first to come up. While wads like AV, HR2, and maybe a few others have rivalled it in the 10 years since its release, this still remains as THE classic super-hard wad even today. The levels themselves, though? Well, though most are not extrodinary, they are still mostly pretty nice even for today, with some nice-looking areas, a few innovative areas, and some nice designs. A MUST play, unless you hate hard levels!x
Anonymous
Oh god, a brutal WAD. Probably the hardest one I've ever played, but still really fun. MAP24, Post Mortem has probably gone down as one of the hardest levels ever made (in a legitimate WAD). The maps are not spectacular looking but you won't notice because you'll be running around the whole goddamn time. Tons of monsters but copious helpings of ammo to go with them. 4/5.x

Extremely hard wad. I'm a hardcore player, and I've just completed it only on medium difficulty. And it's REAL hard. Not sure if I want to do it in Ultra-Violence. I guess I'll do, because if not this would be the only map that I can't beat on hard. Note: This megawad isn't beautiful or artistic: it's just about gameplay. There are very few level that are pretty to see. Even though, 26 it's beautiful! Favorite level: 22 5/5x

The action becomes really tense after the first third. The authors aimed for a specific theme - it uses tunes from ROTT (rather catchy) and keeps on a typical texture palette. Overall it looks unique, even fitting the THEMES section of id games. Levels are tough, but what's good is that they make use of thinking tactics too. 5/5. ICx

Just beautiful. I admired Levels 24 and on from afar for years before I was finally able to afford a modern computer and therefore play the whole thing without my processor choking on all the monsters or the savegame buffer crashing the whole thing.x

Hell revealed is a pretty unique megawad, for me. It's a pioneer of the extreme gameplay megawads, and in my opinion, and only AV manages to top it in that cathegory IMO, even if it sometimes gets too hard for me. The first 12 "warm up" maps have, actually a pretty normal gameplay, but after that it gets really hard and violent. Most of the maps are actually not too detailed (some of them seem to be more worked on, while some are pretty bare), but the levels are very atmosferic.x

A bit too hard for my tastes, but still good.x

Wow, they wern't joking when they said this wad is super tough. Map 13 is notable for looking very simple, but you'll spend almost an eternity fighting for your life as you grab each key. Also, there's a ball crushing archvile & revenant ambush right at the beginning that you don't want to run away from or else Archie will start respawing all those barons you killed. That was an awesome trap that makes for a spectacular teleport ambush. Highly recommended.x

One of the 5 all-time greatest, alongside the Memento Mori's, Alien Vendetta, and Requiem. Mostly wellknown for the insane difficulty of the later maps, but it has a lot more to offer. The architecture in some of the maps is nothing short of incredible and the gameplay is high quality. Most people should consider playing it on HMP skill, though. Especially if playing co/op. A classic. --5/5x

Well, maybe the design or architecture of some maps is not up to some other stuff, but there are quite a number of good levels here (some of which include 11, 18, 24, 26, 14, 13, etc.), but the gameplay in number one which all it's difficulty, balance, and endless challenges! Like it!x
