Hell Revealed is a case in study of bad map design, with most of the levels consisting of either claustrophobic rooms, endless corridors or huge rooms with massive fights ala serious sam. none of these are fun or interesting to play, and they are absolutely UGLY to boot! Worst of all is that this came out after wads like obituary and memento mori had outclassed it in playability, looks and difficulty. What a sorry attempt. 1/5||x|

Although the architecture may be considered simple by today's standards; what makes HR stand out is that the gameplay matches the difficulty and never lets up throughout.
You may want to pull your hair out on some levels, but the addictive gameplay makes you keep coming back for more carnage.
It gets a 5/5 from me.

Using only the BFG and SSG just to get the many thousands of higher level monsters out of the way of very important 64 unit-wide corridors full of revenants is like a chore. In fact, this has recemented my hatred for revenants and their astronomically unfair homing missiles that can trace you miles into a winding cave. The undodgeable arch-vile turrets suck ass as well.||x|

Against it, roughly the first dozen maps are mundane, and the last couple aren't great either; and the traps sometimes absolutely require foreknowledge, leading to a save-die-reload routine that's not to my taste. But when it works - Maps 13-26 inclusive, basically - it's incredible.||x|

While wads like AV, HR2, and maybe a few others have rivalled it in the 10 years since its release, this still remains as THE classic super-hard wad even today. The levels themselves, though? Well, though most are not extrodinary, they are still mostly pretty nice even for today, with some nice-looking areas, a few innovative areas, and some nice designs. A MUST play, unless you hate hard levels!||x|

Note: This megawad isn't beautiful or artistic: it's just about gameplay. There are very few level that are pretty to see. Even though, 26 it's beautiful!

It's a pioneer of the extreme gameplay megawads, and in my opinion, and only AV manages to top it in that cathegory IMO, even if it sometimes gets too hard for me. The first 12 "warm up" maps have, actually a pretty normal gameplay, but after that it gets really hard and violent. Most of the maps are actually not too detailed (some of them seem to be more worked on, while some are pretty bare), but the levels are very atmosferic.||x|

Map 13 is notable for looking very simple, but you'll spend almost an eternity fighting for your life as you grab each key. Also, there's a ball crushing archvile & revenant ambush right at the beginning that you don't want to run away from or else Archie will start respawing all those barons you killed. That was an awesome trap that makes for a spectacular teleport ambush.
