STRAIN is up there with the most legendary mappacks ever released for Doom. Constantly interesting to play, jam-packed with custom enemies and weapons, loaded with interesting level designs and action-packed fights, it hardly gets better than this. Like a fine wine, STRAIN has aged perfectly and is as much fun to play back then as it is today. For the ZDoom aficionados like me I recommend strainfix.pk3, a repackaged version that contains everything and works perfectly. 5/5x

The file on here was packed with some weird format, Winrar and other unarchivers wont open it. You can download the unsplit version from here http://www.doomwadst ation.net/main/strai n.html As far as mod itself, seems good, but I am not a huge fan of the UI (ammo counters and portrait etc replacements).x

I don't get that shit extracted, sorry. It always tells me the files are not in the directory to unpack and after a few tries I gave up at that shit. Just unpack it already before distributing. Thanks. - 0/5x

Shows its age, but by and large still playable and often enough enjoyable. Worth overall as an unofficial Classic Doom series game for its time.x

Really fricken good TC from back in the days. Recommended if you enjoy addictive fun gameplay...x

In terms of originality and fun, this classic wad has them in abundance. An absolute gem and a personal favourite of mine. The style and the new weapons and monsters were just so unique and ahead of it's time. This gets the full 5 stars easily. -TRRobin.x

How to install on Windows 7 with DOSBOX: Download and unzip the file. In a Windows command prompt type: copy /b strain.001 + strain.002 + strain.003 + strain.004 strain.exe Then copy the strain.exe to a DOSBOX folder. Run the strain.exe in DOSBOX (self extractor). Then run strain.bat, choose install, enter the path of doom2. Then choose Play. gg 5/5 dwrTagx

At its time, this was the biggest TC out there. Many may have even called it the unofficial next Doom game! Nowadays the level standard overall isn't quite up to MM2 or Requiem, but there's still some good stuff to be had in here, and I'd say without hestitation it's at least a must try.x

Shame on you, previous reviewers. http://doomedsda.us/ lmps/830/strain10.zi p Now, to the WAD. A few AMAZING maps mixed with so-so maps. I loved playing maps 21-27 or 22-27, so many good ones close together. Also MAP10, 14, 17 were very good. Many custom monsters, some of them are well-balanced, some of them not (the demon with 217 HP was my favourite change). 4/5 stars, vdggx

First off, this is not a total conversion, since it doesn't replace everything. Having said that, STRAIN is incredible, especially for its time. I remember playing this back in '97 when it came out, waiting for my slow computer to download the huge (at the time) file. But boy was it worth it! 5/5x

By far the biggest TC of its time, and still contains some nice stuff, even if a bit of a grab bag. Solid maps for '97.x

Very good TC, one of the best around I spend many hours playing this good wadx

STRAIN is better than REQUIEM whichis a far better stuff than original DOOM 2 itself. In simple words, it is the best wad I have ever tasted. Though presence of invisble holobot and absence of mancubus are pricking facts about it.x

JUST ONE WORD TO EXPLAIN STRAIN- BEST (5/5)x

Level design... You can get worse, but this isn't very good either, I got bored after playing the first two levels (level 2 is tedious...)The new weapons and enemies aren't very interesting too , but you've got to love that new machine gun enforcer !x

1997! Wow. 5/5!x

Really strong. You can tell they put so much attention into the gameplay, the entire WAD just has coherence that a lot of other WADs fail to match. The monster and weapon conversions are well done and offer a different experience than the norm. 5/5.x

It truly is a masterpiece from its time, defying the limits of what the Doom2.exe is made of. 5/5 -Baphometx

This is terrific and definitely a must play! The maps are all medium-sized, mildly complex and nicely detailed and textured. The more if you consider that this masterpiece is from 1997! Best of all are the new monsters. Expect to find hordes of cute turbo-imps, a mini Cyberdemon, flying, firing wheels and many more that I don't want to spoil now. The originality of maps, monsters, puzzles and ambiences is mind-blowing.x

Nearly as good as the real doom!x

I say it's greater than the original doom2.wad !x

A classic.The exit on map 07 doesn`t work though.x

Some of the new graphics are not impressive and the weapons are horribly unbalanced. The demon lord is cool though.x

Here is another link to the unpacked Strain PWAD. This .ZIP also contains 'Strain_Jive.wad' and 'StrainFix.wad', a recent port-fixed version. http://anjbi.com/doo m/winstonsmith6079/S trainFix.zip . I've recently played and completed Stain at skill 4. WOW! What a game! :-)) 5/5 of course. ---WinstonSmith6079x

My favorite megawad of all time. Nothing compares. Amazing music, new enemies, great level design. Just excellent all around. 5/5x

Certainly one of the greatest megawads of all.x

Best megaWAD ever! I haven't seen a better one yet. Though the music is an extreme high-point, all the other parts keep even-pace with it. Excellent in EVERY way. If you haven't played this, then you haven't played a megaWAD. I gave 5 stars; should get 7 or 8 or 10 out of 5 stars though.x

For anyone who has xp and can't extract these files extract the zip to C:strain then open your explore menu and go to C:strain. Click File-->New-->Text file then name it explore.txt. Next open it with notepad and type "unpack c:strain c:strain". Then name it explore.bat. Finally, double click it AND... strain is finally yours.x

Utterly fantastic total conversion. Among the most adventurous I've seen.x

To unpack the weird files in the zip, go to the directory they're in and run "copy /B strain.001+strain.002+strain.003+strain.004 strain.exe" and then run strain.exe to get the WAD and DEH.x

Like Memento Mori and Requiem, except with more new features. Since there are a number of levels I am not a huge fan of, it only gets a 4/5, but on the whole the quality is relatively good. If you want a TC megawad by many authors, this is a good one to download - however, if you just want 32 levels by various authors, I'd go for Requiem and MM2 first (although not necessarily MM1).x

An extremely good wad! You have to be stupid to hate it. It has tons of new enemies, sounds and music. x

This is one of the best megawads for doom,a must have. -denizenx
