    A new mapper has appeared!

    When I read "New Mapper" I thought this was literally the first works of someone, but I never saw this coming. This is something pretty incredible, I hope I can play some of those WADs someday. Meanwhile, I'm still practicing, started mapping since uh... 1 month ago maybe. So 7 years is a pretty nice streak lol

    a wad from the past

    Just started playing DOOM using zandronium with my 13 year old son. digging up my old copy of doom2.wad on an old archive drive, i stumbled across something i thought i'd lost. A copy of the doom level I made back in 1997. to rewind a little bit and explain the level, this was the year after me and a few of my friends graduated high school. We all were active in a local smaller mega-church, as leaders in the youth program, and most of us also worked as janitors there. As a result, we had keys and security codes to the building, as well as the full schedule of activities going on. Of course, we used this a few times in hich school to set up Lazer tag matches, Running thru the whole building a few times. as i said, thsi was a decent sized church. recently constructed, on flat land in the outer suburbs of chicago. As a result, this building was on one level, with the exception of the auditorium lofts in the gymnasium and the auditorium. This was a large building. something like 15-20 classrooms, a gymnasium big enough to hold two oversize basketball court, a bookstore, two sets of restrooms, a handicapped lift at the set of stairs in the main hallway. One day, after one of these illicit Lazer tag nights, we got to talking and the thought of a doom level came up. i remarked it'd be pretty easy to do, as the full set of blueprints for the church hung on the wall in the janitor's room, next to the gymnasium. after a round of "that'd be cool" from all, we played another round of lazer tag, then packed everythign up and went home. The idea stuck with me, and a day or two later, I downloaded Wadauther and started learning it. after about a month or so, We had a few lan parties, and it was a riot. I refined the level a little, and created a webpage, archived at: https://web.archive.org/web/20030626093537/http://www.elnet.com/~drealbob/rw/doom2/ i just uploaded the last version i had to: http://doomshack.org/uploads/ccc1-1.wad just to stress, this is a REAL building, modeled as best as possible in Doom2 textures and sprites. includes exterior grounds, two portable classrooms, the retention pond, the dumpsters, backstage areas, locker rooms, etc. it has had significant additions in the years since, but it is viewable on google maps at : https://www.google.com/maps/place/Christ+Community+Church/@41.9625619,-88.3400308,125a,35y,268.04h,45t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x880f1cdd3297f805:0xc60f69fcad3553ce!8m2!3d41.9629824!4d-88.3416253 if you look close you can recognize the original building and first addition that this map covers almost totally encased in the newer additions. So, i've put it out there, mostly so i don't lose it in the future, but i'd also get a kick out of it if somone out side of my old circle of friends played it and commented on it. anyway, enjoy!

    Ordered and downloaded. I will be blunt, very blunt: this is something big, really big and impressive! By the way, according to the text file, kb1 has been either a playtester or a technical contributor, or both, I guess.

    Thanks for linking that discord, I meant to ages ago and simply forgot.. Time Zone is the main reason I'm never there to DM at this point, the few times I've done it I really enjoyed it, especially with a fairly low ping connection.
  13. It will always say this when you're selecting a server hosted on your very own PC or network. Try checking from a device that is not on your network as a proper test to see if your server is actually displaying. The ZDaemon server window will also tell you if your server is blocked by NAT.

    just had a crash course in demos. are you saying you have a more precise setup than wasd? i dont understand how you move about with such precision. my doom guy (the hero) has a lot of oomph to him and falls right off. Enjoyable and clean replays, btw. I just dont understand exactly what I was witnessing. I dont move anything like that in Crispy. I mean, I started m3.. of sorts... and i walked the first few pillars, ran the next few, and strafe ran up to the seventh pillar. Am I just imprecise? I mean, I am imprecise, but I feel like I am missing something with the movement displayed here. protips appreciated. In my experiment, for example, I strafe ran and then did the opposite strafe-run while changing my view. So whereas the visual asserts that you gotta strafe run right-right; if you strafe run right, and then strafe run left but look 90* right, its a bit more manageable. Well, maybe not exactly 90*, but its pretty generous. Anyhow, I have never had as much fun staring down 24 Hell Knights and 24 Commandos as I did in map 01. And I never realized Eternal Doom was the prime gameplay design, but its so true. Map 01 makes you want to run past everything. I always felt like it was a guilty pleasure so your remarks help quite a bit in that direction, Ribbiks. Honestly, it reminds me of metal gear solid, but with former humans and revenants instead of genome soldiers. I assume after dying to so many levels i might win at something XD

    Good stuff! Not just the actual architecture, but the texturing choices really tie it together. 'Architexture' I've heard it called, and it's used to great effect here.

I've checked through several textures packs on Realm667 including Potpourri, but none of them really have what I'm looking for; sinks, chairs, ovens, beds, selves, the kind of things you'd find in a lived in environment. I know several mods I've played have these kind of things, like Blade of Agony and the Mars and Earth sections of Hell on Earth, but I'd rather avoid taking textures from them without asking. Is there a certain etiquette for borrowing textures? I new to doom modding so I don't know what constitutes being an asshole in this community.

  19. The mother demon stuff makes sense as a lot of D64 sprite replacement packs use her as the arch vile replacement.

    I've tried that, but its not working. According to this https://zdoom.org/wiki/Lump_filtering they should be named doom.id doom.id.doom1 doom.id.doom2 but renaming them doesn't fix the texture alignment issues, like it did when I ran AltDHTP in 2.4.0 I don't understand why it doesn't fix the issue, I am not an modder and completely in the dark here. I'm just trying to update the .pak so that it works right for me, and if somebody else can benefit from that too, all the better. If it can help Hidfan, that is all the better. A pack this amazing shouldn't be overlooked because of a few texture alignment errors. I like your texture pack too, but the textures are too high resolution for what I"m trying to do. :>( Look I don't demand anyone holds my hand here, but since all I know how to do is delete the textures that cause alignment issues, thats what I'm gonna do. Its kinda time intensive so I wish if there was a better way to do this someone would just tell me, but maybe I'm in the wrong forum. I'm gonna keep going through deleting textures as necessary. I'll spare the individual texture deletion posts. I would delete my old ones but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.

    You're correct. The issue is that you have to decide whether to use the old filters or the new ones. If you use the new ones, then anyone playing on an old version of GZDoom won't be able to use the mod as the filters will get ignored since they are newly added. If you use the old ones, though, there's a chance that future versions of GZDoom will ignore them, depending on Graf Zahl's plan for these filters. They have been marked for deprecation which means they shouldn't be used but there's some disagreement as to whether everyone should be switching over.

    By downloading AltDHTP you got specific information on all textures that are different. I'm not going to solve the problem for you, but I can suggest solutions. There are several. You can rename filter folders. You can overwrite the textures. You can change the texture names and add information about them. You can make a separate patch. What and how to do is up to you. For me it is not relevant at all. By the way my current Doom version is Zandronum 3.0. )
