    well I must be a filthy casual. no matter what difficulty you play on, No Chance's title pretty much checks out. the encounters make it so that you have no chance at something, if you screw up slightly, you won't have a chance of survival, but in all difficulty cases, there's not a hair to be unscathed here. get ready to run at the start, although by run I mean "get a better weapon than the shotguns" because you'll want to get both a rocket launcher and plasma gun. it's hard to tell which is the better option, the dangerous route over the actually damaging lava (oddly enough, the only damaging lava in-game is in that area) or the one next to the arch-vile to get the plasma gun? then make sure that one key is grabbed to get that BFG. oh, and practically every dead-end will trigger a nasty teleport trap. the longer hallways are rife with arch-viles and mancubi in each and every nook imaginable. also it may be just me but I expect this map to actually be a lot larger. I dunno why. now if you look at the thing placement, there's definitely room for the Doom gods on UV, just look at the DMMPST and the sudden rise of arch-viles and revenants between skills 3 and 4. oddly enough, there are no hitscanners unless you play UV (45 chaingunners), while the imp and cacodemon count lowers a bit (possibly to make room for more revenants), and only one spiderdemon shows up on UV. needless to say, prepare to get killed pretty much any second if you ever decide to touch this on UV. this is one of those maps you MUST play on a lower setting to ease into for the higher settings.

    This thread has been a lot of help, I'm now about halfway through a rough plan for my first full level in a long time. It's pretty simple, a simple outdoor area, a raised courtyard and a small base – but without these tips, the level would have just gone in a straight line!

  13. E2M2: I enjoyed the gameplay a bit more here as the level has a better adventurous feel that suck you more into the exploration. I agree with @Urthar for the most that the simpler Doom 1 bestiary works well for what the maps try to do and have this low key combats. Though moments like the long staircase with the spectres would work better if you had the SSG at hand and the things could have been spiced up more, as they are now they are plain and monotonous. I hope that the later maps won't be much larger than this one because hearing this kind of song over and over (and without the wider variery of the Doom 2 monsters) will get old very quickly, or that at least the game steps up. And speaking of the monotony one thing "irked" me. Again the attention to the details, the architecture and the texture usage is something very cool to admire, then the outdoor areas (some bits at the RK and the YK area) were the worst parts of the level. Just plain grey everywhere, extremely dull looking. It seems that it also a stylistic choice perhaps, looking at the other maps they use only mono-textured (mostly brown) for the outer envirnments. Last thing was the long backtracking, I don't have problems with it per se but here you have to through the same path for 3-4 times.

    Things about Doom you just found out

    Every outdoors area Episode 1 level uses high walls. The skybox is clearly not designed to be seen below the mountains, so I wouldn't be surprised if Raven never even noticed the mistake!

    E2M2 This is the map where the blue-floored "onion corridors" I mentioned previously make their appearance, a slowly descending switchback of delightful curves that the player must traverse on their way from the cargo-handling "core" of the level to the monster holding cells and grimy underworks of its northern nodes. Espi didn't supply names for any of these levels, and while there wasn't anything to suggest the presence of an "anomaly" in E2M1, there are definitely areas here that fit the existing Containment Area level name quite well, whether that's the small collection of crates and large warehouse door toward the beginning of the map, or the aforementioned monster holding cells found deeper within the complex. Doors (locked and otherwise), passages, and bottlenecks serve to divide the level into several clear substructures; there are clearly separate western, north-eastern, and south-eastern buildings within the greater complex, with the western structure being further subdivided first into northern and southern halves before its northern half is again bisected into two sections which must be approached from different directions. Particularly within the poured concrete and grimy GRAY* and ICK* textures of that north-western subnode of the map, there's a pronounced sense of mutually inaccessible areas being interwoven and coiled around each other, letting you see where you've been (or where you've yet to go) but offering only glimpses of how you might get there from where you currently are. The combat is pretty low-key with the greatest threat coming from carelessness or a lack of situational awareness in the presence of so many shotgun sergeants; I feel they're going to strip more health and armour off most players than the handful of cacodemons and Barons of Hell standing guard over the map's crucial spaces or the swarming spectres that infest the gloomy blue-and-metal hallways in the south-eastern corner of the map.

    I'd even say Doom 2016 is like Pong but you don't bounce the ball, but shoot the ball, and the ball is bullets, and the point isn't to miss the opponent, but hit them. I mean, so much anger in you that it kinda seems ridiculous. I very much dislike Doom 3 and I criticize it often and with passion, but there's a difference between critique and downright hate. Yeah, games are overcomplicated now, have too many systems, they're not that fun. I agree. Don't like it either? Play the unending stream of WADs. Or grab Project Warlock or Dusk or tons of other good games out there. Doom is a cashable brand. Don't expect the new games to be toned down. They're better than they had the right to be anyway. What's your goal? What do you achieve being this angry?
