    Back to the Arcade

    Kinsie

Shacknews reports from QuakeCon that Doom 2 is heading to Xbox Live Arcade, with online and splitscreen four player and, curiously, a "whole new episode". Whether this is one of the Final Doom episodes or something new is currently unknown. Keep 'em peeled!

Ugh it's probably gonna be some unfinished maps they scrapped for the final release like the "secret level" in the one that came with Doom 3.

I'm hoping that the existence of Wolfenstein 3-D on PSN means they'll consider releasing Doom and Doom II on there as well.

Extra episode.... This had better not be just them throwing Master Levels in (though that would be a nice addition.)

I seriously doubt they're actually going to make anything NEW. Either they're going to toss in some random maps (such as the Master Levels) or they're going to take a bunch of random crappy maps off the archives (like they did with those awful super secret maps in xbox Doom) and call it an episode.

But hey, here's hoping they actually make something new!

If they are using wads from the community, hopefully they use something worth while.

I love how in the textfile for the original download (what was it, SEWER.ZIP?) the authors go on about how they've made the map to a high standard, stopping short of directly saying "we are better than you". And it's really quite a crappy map.

As long as they write a new netcode for this version, instead of the re-using the original netcode (which they did for Doom on XBLA).
However, the promise of a new episode is interesting.

About time! Hopefully they make the achievements a bit more challenging/original. "Kill every monster on any level" GEE WHIZZ

That's what I was thinking, one can only dream.

A new episode? Weird. Nothing against Nerve... but a new episode would be better had it been made by select members of the community as opposed to them. Nobody understands Doom mapping to the extent of many members of this community... and I doubt Nerve can produce anything with the quality of a map by Espi, Vader, Kristus, Dutch Devil.... etc. That said... I'm sure it will be ok.

True, however, most of the people over there are absolutely clueless about the Doom community.

I'm still excited about Nerve doing the episode, though.

Yeah I'm sure it will be alright. Besides, you throw an Espi map in there or something and you'll undermine the main game with the quality offset :P

    Considering how resourceful the Doom community is (i.e. Kaiser's Doom64EX, PSX Doom resources and Doom 64 resources extracted and used), I'm positive it'll make it onto the PC one way or another. (;

I actually like the idea of them doing an episode themselves. It'll be interesting to see how an episode made by a semi-large studio such as Nerve software will fare against some of the stuff the Doom community has made.

$5 someone rips the game from the 360 hard drive/memory card and extracts the episode contents.

    That's pretty much what I meant :)

Spork, I have no doubt in my mind... they won't be able to produce a map that even comes close to your work.

Wait, what? I'm confused by this, as I live in the UK and managed to download both Doom and Wolfenstein 3D perfectly fine.

I'm pretty sure you can just register a second account in a different country. I've used that to download some region-specific demos before, and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work with arcade games as well.

I live in Iceland, but since Iceland is not supported by xbox live i had to create a UK account (my home is registered as Buckingham palace, lol!) instead. I can download all sorts of games and demos, but when i try to download at least these games that i know of:

    Doom
    Wolfenstein
    Duke Nukem 3D

Then i just get a error that says: This item is not available at this/your location or something like that. And yet i can download almost everything else. I downloaded and played Battlefield 2143 from Xbox live Arcade without any problems whatsoever.

If the guy above is using a UK account and can download the games even though i can't that it's probably just Microsoft giving Europe shitty xbox live support and the fault is there's.

I mean why is Iceland not on the list in the first place? The PS store has Iceland on there list.

Perdition's Gate or that other commercial addon (who's name escapes me) maybe?
