    Collector's Doom Box Art Revealed

    Linguica

I noticed that EBGames.com has posted an image of the Collector's Doom box art, although it's not yet up on their pre-order page. If you don't know, Collector's Doom is an upcoming compilation including Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom (so my original guess was right). On our current POTD page you can see what it looks like for yourself.

I still think they should've done a new levelset with that thing. How much could that possibly cost them -- certainly would ensure a few more sales...

If it's less that 10 bucks, sure. And it should also have, instead of a "compilation of the best user-made levels", a "compilation of the worst user-made levels". It could include some of UAC Resurrection, Deimos Anomaly, and a majority of the levels presented here. What I look forward to is a simple level editor that works, too. But at least I could update to an actual copy, and not just the pirated Dooms I have(j/k, just need material).

Why would anyone want a "compiliation of the worst user-made levels", dickface? I think it's a cool idea but maybe they should have some bad ass ports in there and maybe even one from ID Software themselves. Who knows, theyre full of surprises. heh

surely they can't have the old doom2.exe in there, many of the current crop of gamers won't be able to run it properly, or have missing sound/input devices etc.

doom95.exe might fare better but a bit of a joke still.

Shame they haven't taken the opportunity to make this an "updated doom" as we know it, say with Jdoom as port, and a bunch of community megawads to top it off (requiem etc).

If this is for the new gamers looking forward to "newdoom", they are gonna be dissapointed seeing it identical to the way it was in '93, whereas its so easy to make it look a lot better.

I was wondering about that. doom2.exe won't work on many current computers, doom95.exe was ported by some people at Microsoft based on like DirectX 2 (before the API was more or less solidified) and has many issues (mouse input and partial transparency comes to mind) -- plus nobody knows what happened to the source.

I wonder what they're doing with this release. Surely they haven't stamped at the bottom "requires MS-DOS 6.22" ... ?

I totally understand it, it has nothing to do with being older. Just think about it, who wants bad levels? The collectors edition is a good thing for the community, heh. Quit misunderstanding people dumb ass.

If anyone spends money for this they are crazy. Talk about crass commercialism. This isn't good for the Doom community, it is money grubbing at its worst. Man, the gaming bsuiness must be desperate if they have to go this low for a few bucks.

If ya wanna make money in the game business you don't do it this way. I don't know what the price of this thing will be, but I bet it won't be much compared to the price of a new game. Considering what it cost to distribute stuff I doubt any profits will amount to more than petty cash for id. Enough to stock the office with coffee and soda maybe :) This is clearly geared to increase interest in the new Doom game.

How can an ancient game engine be advertising for a game that won't be out for another two years? If that is the best id could do, I would hire a new advertising company.

This has nothing to do with the new Doom game. Think about this for a moment. How much money have they spent on this game? The cost of the cardboard box, that is all. That cost maybe .02 per box. There is nothing new in this game! Nobody has spent any development money on this.

Even if they sell it for 10.00 (my guess it will retail for 19.99), everyone will make a huge profit margin. Even if id only makes $1 per package, that is pure profit since they have invested NO development time. If they sell 10,000 copies they have made an easy 10,000 dollars.

Does id need the money? I doubt it.

So where is all rest of the money going? To the publisher and distributors. They haven't spent any development money on this either, so to them it is easy money as well.

No matter how you slice it, this is money grubbing. This is just a lame attempt to cash in on Doom's popularity and make an easy buck. Pretty sad in my book.

So, id, the creators of Doom are no longer allowed to make money from it? Just because they did all the work on it some eight years or so ago? They are after all a business right? If something they have is in demand it just makes good business sense to take advantage of that.

You also have to remember Doom games are scarce in stores atm. Every week there's at least a couple of people asking for warez on the forums simply because none of the games can easily be found to be purchased. Thirteen and fourteen year olds don't have credit cards so buying the game on-line simply isn't an option for most. With the recent increase in Doom's popularity, this is a good chance for those new to Doom to get in on the fun and find out what all the fuss is about. I happen to think that is good for the community.

You are spot on, I get several emails a week (okay, a month) from people who want to know where they can buy doom, I have no idea what to tell them. I suppose I could suggest they wait for Freedoom to become available but that doesnt help them now.

www.idsoftware.com, look under the "shopping maul" section ... this is the most consistent place to purchase copies of Doom from.

See, blackknight; you don't get it, you aren't completely developed mentally. Ever heard of "it's so bad it's good"? EVERYONE would wand a collection of the worst levels after loads of "good" levels; soo bad they're good.

The truth is that your idea of a good level is probably complete shit, so people would want to know what you idea of a bad level would be. Don't misunderstand, dumbass.

I'll just make one more comment on this. I think we all agree that id isn't going to make a ton of money on this. Most of the money will go to the middle men. (I checked the online ad and my guess was right; this will retail for 19.99).

I think we can also agree that no one is going to play with a vintage Doom engine (very few at least). Most will d/l ZDoom or Edge or whatever. So what you are buying here are the IWADS.

id has already released the source code for Doom under the GPL license. Why not make the IWADS available for download? Its not going to harm id's business. The IWADS are still copyrighted material and are protected under the copyright laws.

I am not disputing that everyone has a right to profit from their work, and id has profited mightily from Doom. However, making the IWADS available would not impact id at all financially.

I just feel that since id was the one to take the step to release Doom to the community (and that step hasn't hurt them at all), why not also release the IWADS as well?

    I've already answered that question.

The reason the IWADs aren't freeware is because apparently someone still feels there is money to be made from them (as evidenced by this Collector's Doom that is coming out). And since this is a capitalist society, giving something away that people are willing to pay money for doesn't make much economic sense. Its the same reason why stuff like music hits from the 60's aren't free. Sure they're old, but people are still willing to pay money for CD's of them.

And so what if ID Software is "Money grubbing" as Rick Clark put it. They own it, they can do whatever they want with it. And if it still puts food on the table, so much the better. Thats how a capitalist society works. If you want something else, head over to Cuba and give socialism a try.

Or have a revolution and put all the capitalists and their supporters against a wall and shoot them. Its much cheaper than going to Cuba

Oh yes, capitalism is such a wonderful institution. In the name of capitalism, the American Indians were murdered or herded like cattle into reservations while the capitalist stole their lands.

In the name of capitalism, children were chained to the factory lines and forced to work for a nickel a day.

In the name of capitalism, men, woman and children were stolen from their native lands, bought and sold like animals and forced to work for the capitalist.

In the name of capitalism, the miner was forced to work in unsafe conditions and died by the hundreds.

In the name of capitalism, thousands died building the railroads for pennies a day.

In the name of capitalism, the environment is being destoyed and the planet is becoming uninhabitable.

In the name of capitalism the senior citizen and the poor cannot get the drugs they need because the companies charge 1000% more for these items than they are allowed in other countries.

Oh, yes, capitalism has such a wonderful heritage. I'm sure you're quite proud to be a capitalist.

Hey, I wasnt joking about shooting them. Im a dyed in the wool communist/anarchist/atheist. I know that translates as evil to poorly educated/brainwashed americans but I know Im a good person (better than most of the god fearing so called christians) Well okay, shooting them is a bit extreme, an alternative would be to blind them (surgically, so it doesnt hurt)

No, saying you want to shoot all capitalists and that you're not joking translates as evil. You'd be killing many times more people than Hitler did.

Communism would be great if it actually worked. Unfortunately, however, the underlying principles of it go against basic human nature (i.e. look out for yourself, don't give a crap about anyone else).

Therefore you still have the extremely rich (members of the government as opposed to big businesses) and the extremely poor (who are even worse off in communism than they would be in a capitalist society).

Even worse, in many communist countries the citizens are in constant fear for their lives, due to the high crime rate. Those who dare speak out against their society, a government member, or whatever, strangely "disappear".

As I said, communism would be great if it works. Unfortunately, human greed gets in the way.

*wonders if he should mention how many millions have died or been enslaved at this point because of communist/socialist/fascist governments like Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia*

In the name of capitalism you'll have a 70 year lifespan and live with cars and computers and air conditioning and FREEDOM, so perhaps you should rethink your viewpoint if your argument is that capitalism does more harm than good.

It is true that communism does not work because human nature is selfish. It is false that this selfishness is in any way bad, wrong, or evil.

...but I fully support capitalism on moral (nonreligious) grounds and oppose communism INTELLIGENTLY and not lightly.

As for class disparity that capitalism supposedly causes, I'd like to point out that capitalism created the first middle class in history.

And now to break down all of Rick's points...

"In the name of capitalism, children were chained to the factory lines and forced to work for a nickel a day."

Being forced to do anything is an aspect of a government where rights do not exist, not a capitalist government where the rights to life, liberty, and property still exist.

"In the name of capitalism, men, woman and children were stolen from their native lands, bought and sold like animals and forced to work for the capitalist."

Once again, slavery is not an aspect of a right-protecting, capitalist government. Anyone who would live off of slave labor is NOT a capitalist.

"In the name of capitalism, the miner was forced to work in unsafe conditions and died by the hundreds. "

Forced as in "chose to because he wanted the money"? Interesting concept of force.

"In the name of capitalism, thousands died building the railroads for pennies a day."

In the name of communism, millions live as slaves to the government in places like China and Cuba.

"In the name of capitalism, the environment is being destoyed and the planet is becoming uninhabitable."

...except it isn't. Environmentalism is almost exclusively based on junk science and most qualified ecological scientists believe that humans are having no noticable impact on the environment. I'd also like to note that the environment is only of value to the extent that it aides human life and has no intrinsic value seperate from some sort of valuing entity.

"In the name of capitalism the senior citizen and the poor cannot get the drugs they need because the companies charge 1000% more for these items than they are allowed in other countries."

I've never found the drugs I've needed for allergies or illnesses to be very expensive, and I am by no means even remotely rich. Besides, if it is your drug, shouldn't you have the right to sell it at whatever price you wish? Granted if you overcharge nobody'll buy it, but my point remains.

The only rights looked after by a capitalist society are the rights of the property owning class, thats why we get Fascism when the middle class realize they are as unimportant as the working class. Instead of studying propaganda take a good look at the history of the 20th century. Capitalism is based on greed and exploitation, nothing more or less. Like Lenin said "the capitalist will sell you the rope to hang him with"
