    Doom 3 Beta Patch

    Linguica

Robert Duffy updated his .plan with the news that id has released a beta of the upcoming Doom 3 patch, exclusively on Fileshack (hey wasn't Shacknews the site that spearheaded an effort to stop companies from releasing files to certain file download sites on an exclusive basis? The ironing is killing me). Anyways I'll let it speak for itself:

We have released the first update for DOOM 3 as a beta and on a limited scale ( it is only available on the File Shack at www.shacknews.com ). We don't anticipate any issues with it but felt it best to get it into the hands of a few thousand people rather than the entire customer base in case we missed something. We will release the update through our update server for wide release once we have verified there are no problems with it.

We will be releasing another update in the near future that will include Punk Busters cheat protection functionality for DOOM III.

The SDK is also ready to go and as soon as the update is out in non beta form the SDK will be made available for download.

The Linux Dedicated server is also ready to go and will also be available as soon as the update is non beta.

The DOOM 3 demo is also coming in a few days, it is finishing the last stages of QA. It should give everyone waiting to buy the game a taste of what DOOM 3 is all about. It contains 3 levels of the game and is single player only.

So there you go, head on over if you want to snag the beta patch early. Oh and you can click on comments to see the list of changes, if you're too lazy to check the .plan yourself.

I just installed this patch, and it keeps asking for disc 1 over and over again (yes doom 3 disk 1 is indeed in the proper drive and the drive works fine).

If anyone encounters this and/or knows how to remedy this, plz to share thanks.

Actually, that's not quite right. The Shacknews staff had a problem with exclusive DEMOS. The reasoning was that your demo is supposed to show off your game to a maximum number of people. Restricting the distribution of a DEMO by making it exclusive is what makes no sense.

There's nothing wrong with exclusive betas, such as the ones often offered on Fileplanet. These require a smaller testing group and it makes sense to release them to a limited number of people first.

They should make the whole episode a demo and add 2 more episodes to the retail version. You know, back to their roots.

Woo. 3 Level demo is pretty sweet, considering the size of the levels in the game.

Unless the "3 levels" simply consists of the pre- and post-invasion versions of the first area & Mars City Underground.

I wonder if they fixed the bug where it won't start up due to certain legal software running on the host machine... </cynicism>

    That's not a bug, that's a feature.

That's most likely what they'll include. The later levels could contain spoilers, and will ********ly contain big bad monsters, too difficult for a demo.

Although it'd be cool if they included the Enpro map :p

Heh it broke my doom 3, so I copy pasted the doom3.exe on my cd back to my doom 3 directory, and now when I pick up shotgun ammo it says weird numbers instead of shotgun ammo. Woohoo! I'll wait for the real patch.
