    Doom 3 Speculation

    Arioch

Neil Abraham of TheTripleHelix.com sent word of an article they've written up with some speculation as to some recent and not-so-recent comments from id Software people, and how they might relate to Doom 3. It's an intriguing read, so head on over and see for yourself.

    Preach it, brother.

-Another thing, story is unimaginably important. That is why Half-Life is movie-quality. Doom 2 got boring after the first level.

You're right, I should add your point to my article.

BTW - I've written this article just for the fun of it. I hope that's ok especially with you. Since TheTripleHelix decided to pick it up and to translate my German english into something more readable why not?

I'd like to say it's a fun article to read for somebody who likes speculations and I can not remember naming it as an article based on hard but secret insider facts.
Every word of the article is nothing but pure fiction.

In the meantime I'll do the same like you do:
Knowing fuck about the inner workings of id software and waiting for the game:)

Wavelength, if it got boring after the first level why are we still all here today?

The article was indeed a good read but I was left decidedly frustrated by it hence the flippant post. No offence meant.
Speculation is both compelling and utterly irritating.

No problem - I was not offended.

One of the reasons I wrote the article was my personal frustration resulting from the lack of real information and the constant misinformation given by board trolls everywhere.

Sorry for the typos in the article - I think I'm holding the infamous world record for fatfingering words in an internet article now.

Besides the deep frustration (which is a sign of the deep wish to hold this game in your hands) did you like the article?

Nicely written article. I usually get a bit annoyed by too much tech "buzzword" speculation (where the writer has no clue).

How much translation was involved? It's sure a smooth read now.

Since I'm German I can not read all too good between the lines: Did I become a clueless prey of "buzzword speculation" or did I manage to avoid it as this was my intention (since I really don't have a clue).

    Actually no translation was involved.
I wrote this article as a quick take on Doom3 a while back and posted it on my website. TheTripleHelix stumbled into it and asked for permission to post it. So I spiced the article a little more up but I didn't have the time to spellcheck ("Jar dropping" :)). I thought TheTripleHelix would spellcheck it and correct the grammar, but they did a cut and paste (which is absolutely ok in this case).

Regardless the content I'm now very well known as a JeffK imitation... I can not remember an online article with more typos, missing letters or connected words.

Sorry about that - I'll fix later today on my site. BTW - I've written a less speculative Doom3FAQ which could be found here: http://www.dailydesaster.com/doom3/doom3_faq.htm

    Anyway - thanks for reading!

    1. You're not, I'm pretty sure half of these people are just the same person under 50 different names to increase hits to the site.
    2. Level Editors
    3. Episode one of Doom
    4. Anticipation of Doom 3, hopefully it will be what the first two tried and couldn't be what-so-ever.

ps- you spelled your name wrong

Precisely. That's what Linguica's been doing away from public scrutiny.

It's fun to predict the content of a video game just as it is a new film or maybe a novel.
It always amazes me how id software's next release is a major headline whilst there are some amazing things being produced elsewhere in the world that recieve relatively little attention. Testament to the company's impact on the game scene in recent years.

When Ridley Scott et al created Alien in 1979 they were streets ahead of the rest. Even Star Wars looked sterile in comparison.
One thing I am certain of is that the visuals in the new Doom game will resemble the look and feel of this film and I wouldn't be surprised if the content and atmosphere reflect this.

If I were involved in the design I'd restrict the weapons available and do away with the 'find the yellow key' bullshit and that's just for starters.

    I'm 110% with you.
That was exacetely my first thought when I saw the Macworld movie. I started PC gaming very late in life when the point of 3D acceleration was reached. All I was looking for was and still is: A good game to resemble the feel of Alien and another one to resemble to feel of Star Wars like space combats. The later one was considerably easier to find but Im still searching for the first one.

Basicly it's fun to see how even the slightest hint of noting by Carmack gets the web upset. Id had a big impact on the whole industry by bringing PC gaming to a next level and if they deliver with Doom3 more than an engine they sould be able to do it another time.

I think the special ting about id software is that you basicly know that they'll deliver. They might not deliver what you wanted them to, but they for sure as hell deliver.

It's been a nice discussion here!

A couple of interesting points that you raised in the article:
    o Webcams
o id's interest in using permanent internet connections whilst gaming
    o Voice over net

To anybody these are exciting features that present a wealth of possibilities.
To a game designer they are positively orgasmic.
To a game designer working with a team of renowned tech guru's this must simply be heaven.

I suspect that (judging by comments made by id employees) the game will make use of this technology to enhance the single player / co-op game and may even see a shift from the familiar multiplayer model.
ie. Multiplayer will actually be what we currently know as co-operative play with platoons of players teaming up to do battle with the enemy all communicating directly via webcam and pc microphone.

Sadly an option that would be impractical for a great many people.
We'll have to wait and see but wouldn't it be cool to walk into a EB store and by a UA-Corp headset for £59.99 that allows you to make use of these features?

That's exactely why I mentioned these points.

But stil keep in mind that an out-of-contextet compilation of ripped statements by id's employees like done with that article has the credibility like any other conspiracy theory.

Basicly the conclusions about id's statements of these points represent more the way I'd like to see them implemented than some acutal implementation. Besides any speculation - so why the hell is id interested whether we have a permanent internet connection or not?

If this is only a basic interest, Todd Hollenshead would have called the market research company of choice to order a report. Instead they did let Xian call his friend Steve Gibson to ask the audience they're aiming at.

Contrary to this poll there's a strong rumor floating around that the original Doom3 single player game could ship without any multiplayer support. As unlikely as it is for id it could still be true...
