    Doom: RoE Interview

    Cyb

If you just can't hear enough crap about the upcoming Doom 3 expansion pack Resurrection of Evil, then IGN has the interview for you. It's with id's designer guy Matt Hooper (who is also the executive producer of RoE), and goes into the basics of the expansion, comparisons to Half-Life 2 and the grav gun, inspiration from movies and other games and even some bits about the also upcoming Doom movie.

Well it looks like id's finally admitting two things: that Doom never really had much of a story (which isn't necessarily bad...excessive exposition may ruin a game, but that's another topic altogether) and that the Doom movie won't necessarily be like the game itself. Fair enough, and honest to boot.

Doom has a great story. People are confusing quality and quantity.

Heh, just because id admits something doesn't mean I agree with it. :P But your point is true.

Well, DOOM has a story, simple, but a story. Hellspawns are entering our reality from a failed experiment that opened a gate to hell. Marines must stop them, but they get killed, and just one (or a small group) survive the initial onslaught (by casual) and must do the task alone, for that it's necessary to fight the demons and the zombified humans that fell victims of them.

IMO the main element is "demons from hell are invading us from an axidentaly opened gate to hell". You can replace the martian stuff, and probably even the space marine stuff (with other armed force), but not the demonic elements if you want that to be DOOM.

Just out of curiosity, am I the only one who notices that Half-Life's story is very similar to doom's? (exept at the end with gman)

Doom has a simple storyline. I really like storylines being a major part of games, but doom is one of those fun games where it just doesn't matter.

"A scientific experimenting going wrong and resulting in an invasion of beings from another reality" has been around since the B-movies of the 1950's.
