    Hacx Finds New Host

    mewse

    Here's the email:

    A decision has been made!

Thanx to everyone who offered to host the Official Hacx site. I really appreciate the offers and it's nice to see that Hacx still has a following. I've decided to turn the reigns over to Bob Larkin. He's got oodles of bandwidth, disk space and, more importantly, time to treat Hacx right!

I've sent him a CD with just about every piece of material that Banjo ever created including all the Hacx2 3D and Crusher stuff so he'll probably be spending the next couple weeks sifting through this huge amount of material and deciding what to do with it.

So my congratulations to Bob and with that, I'm going to turn this notice over to him to say a few words. Take it away....

          -- Rich Johnston aka Nostromo

I want to give this piece of historic software the treatment it deserves and as many of you know, I'm not an html guru so I'd like to have a site building contest. I want some people who do have the skills to come up with a set of nice looking pages for HACX.

Beyond that - I have my work cut out for me with all the material I'll be receiving and expect to take several weeks sifting through the info, discarding the useless and saving the important. I will also be working on a smooth transition of the website from its current location to my hosts servers.

So, if you have some good web site building skills - lets figure out a format and some sort of reward for doing the work and get this site going.

          -- Bob Larkin (interleave1@earthlink.net)

This probably won't remain a top story for very long, because the /newstuff minions are in their dungeons working on #119 as I speak.

Yeah, I can hear the evil /newstuff goblins with their glowing eyes like embers hammering the WADs down there in their sooty halls amid the noxious vapors and the moans of the lost souls of poor newbie mappers.

Keeping on topic here, I'm sure glad that if HACX has to move it is to a site that is developing a reputation for hosting TCs and megawads. And yes, I wish I could get a copy of that CD too. Damn!

The nuke? IMO it needed splash damage :\

Well, let me put my two cents in.
I have already loaded the current site setup on my server but I'd really like to get a new look for it and of course take off extraneous information that doesn't have anything to do with Hacx.
I'd like to fit the new site for Hacx in with Doom Wad Station but not have it look like it - just fit it in so that people don't go into culture shock.
If anyone is interested in trying to do this - please email me at this address: interleave1@earthlink.net
and I'll send you the site files. I only want serious inquiries please. I don't want to be emailing the site files all over the world and have only 1 person turn something back in to me.
Some other stuff to keep in mind. I can read html and know how to manipulate it fairly well but I'm mostly a copy and paste type of guy and can't write html hardly at all so it needs to be a setup that I can easily update without screwing up the pages. That doesn't mean design it for a moron. I'm not a moron. Just don't throw in all kinds of java scripts and crap that I won't know what to do with. I also don't want frames unless there is a menu that might need to be updated occassionally, in which case perhaps a frames and non-frames set of pages need to be developed. Flash will be ok as long as people don't need to wait through it if they don't choose to.
I'm sure amongst all the stuff I have from my own site and stuff and the Hacx stuff we can probably work out some sort of reward for the work. Or maybe you site designers have some ideas. Just remember, this is basically a historic site since no new stuff is being created for it but perhaps once it is up and running people can create add-on wads for it which could be posted on those pages. Who knows - the sky is the limit.
Let me know if you're interested in taking on the task of trying to design this site.
I also have the pages loaded here: http://www.doomwadstation.suhost.com/hacx-home
You can get a look at the current site configuration to see what it looks like. Rich did say that he had some stuff (not much) that he didn't want changed which, of course, I will respect. I will send the text file with those requirements.
my email again is - interleave1@earthlink.net
I am leaving for Florida in a a few days so please let me know and I will start looking at stuff when I return.

IIRC it was just the BFG with new look.. disappointing indeed.

    Hooray for Brad_Tilf!!!

I might not agree in all his reviews, but this guy has definately done a major effort for the community!!!

Well, most of the weapons I think were really similar to the standard weapons, but the BFG is probably the least imaginative.

Sort-of-cool ones were the super shotgun replacement, plasma rifle replacement, and the double-shot pistol (not sure if you noticed this, it does fire two shots at once)
But I think it's easy to say the UZI is the coolest. Funny how just three or four reload frames can do that.

Especially considering that logically you don't need to reload every time you fire a shot, or that you conceivably hold down the trigger, firing off all your bullets without reloading once. Doom limitations. Go figure.

Yeah, the uzi was cool, it was just different than the regular assortment of Chainguns. the regular shotgun also dissapointed me.. it was a poorly drawn .... erm.. thing that shot green stuff. The BFG looked SO awesome.. and all it did was fire a BFG shot that looked like a nuclear waste container... *sigh* I had had such high hopes for the guns after playing the demo.

    Gooday Rich,

Thanks for having the foresight to not let the site just disappear into oblivion. Future generations of Doomers also thank you.

I already tried to do my best to make pub for this piece of art!
I made a thread at my host site to advise players that I made an entry on my "Best'Of" page on my own site "DLW" (Doom Legacy Wads).
I managed text files within the zipped file available to download, with all the needed infos to bring the authors and Nostromo at top!
Here is how I started the text file:

All this pack of files was made by Jive for DLW
    http://newdoom.com/hosted/dlw/
    dlw@newdoom.com
    on September 25, 2002.

Based on the great stuff at:

Nostromo's Place - The Official Hacx Website
                        http://www.sonic.net/~nostromo/

                         A huge "THANKS" to Nostromo
                                   and to
                              Banjo Software!!!

==================== What have made Jive ============================

    1) Strangely, I had to change, using Wintex, two sprites' offsets:
    TREDA0: 21:21 --> 21:56 and TBLUA0: 21:21 --> 21:61
to have them hanging normaly on the ceilings!

    2) I have included the dehacked file within the pwad.

    3) I have created this current file "Hacx.txt", using "README.txt",
and adding: all that is above "Happy Gaming!", and all that is uppon
    "HACX (tm) - Registered Version".

    4) I have created the files "Story.txt" and "Credits.txt", with the work
made by Nostromo on his great site dedicated to Hacx.
I just "cute & paste", without any other change!

I have made it for the Doom History:

all this great work must stay alive!!!

    Great thanks to Nostromo!

    That's all I have changed!!!

    You can have ot here:
    Hacx on my "Best'Of" page

I'm very happy to see that one of my very best friends, Bob Larkin, was the man charged to work for the Doom story, as far as Hacx is one of its greatest part!!!

Dude, I didn't know anyone had kept the HacX 2 stuff...cool. That means he has my awesome Quake engine version of the Oval Office that I spent about a month making...hehe.
