    Heil Doom 3

    Linguica

According to a pcgames.de article, Doom 3 ist das erste Spiel von id Software seit knapp 12 Jahren, das in Deutschland nicht indiziert wird! Er, and according to a Google translation, it appears that Doom 3 will not be "indexed" in Germany, which is interesting considering every id game since Wolf3D has been banned or restricted in some way. Apparently the lack of Splatterszenen helped. So German Doomers, rejoice I guess.

That's good news. Not that it was impossible to get all the other games here but this will make it considerably easier. :-)

And for all you outside Germany:

'Indiziert' means that the game may not be advertised in a way that is accessible to people under 18. A direct result is that it is impossible to display it openly on a shelf in a store (and which normally kills it commercially.) In no way it is forbidden to sell the game to adults if these rules are obeyed but it can make it very hard to get such games/movies, not to mention expensive and of course way too many games are censored to avoid such fate.

Germany has strict laws regarding censorship of violent games I'm pretty sure.

The themes in Wolf3D can't have encouraged the German censors to be lenient towards id's games as a whole. Still, their aversion to blood and guts in games does look odd alongside their lax attitude to extreme porn.

I dunno what porn you look at, but the porn I look at doesn't contain killings of the actors.

@ Graf Zahl: Am geilsten find ich noch, dass nun einem Test in Zeitschriften nichts mehr im Wege steht. Endlich mal ein id-Test in der Gamestar!

(I said above, that now Doom3 reviews will be allowed in print magazines - a thing that was forbidden with most previous id games)

As oppose to here in America where any amount of violence is OK, but if a nipple is shown....

And here in the UK, sex and violence are moderately tolerated, but lord help you if you use bad language (the top offensive phrase in Britain being "Jesus Christ!")

    What?

I think you are a little behind in your German...

    Die sind nicht Brüste!

    Or maybe it was

    Die sind Brüste nicht!

In any case, those both say "Those are not breasts!"

You said, verbatim, That icht no(negative!) a booby!

At best, half-assed Germarican translation could've been:

    "Das ist nicht ein booby/tit/breasts!"

    YOU FAIL IT.

God I love when people who don't know a word of German try and speak it. :P
Oh Yeah and Wolfenstein 3D was banned here in Germany which means you could not own it legally.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was okay becuase they removed the Swastikas.
So Doom 2 actually slipped through the cracks, because it is not okay to show swastikas in a Computer Game so I am really confused why Doom 2 was not also banned.

I believe there was a special German edition of Doom2 where maps 31 and 32 were omitted (and presumably the Nazi-themed resources too?).

Why? Heil is a perfectly acceptable word in common use.

Yes, and id released an official patch for the German version to re-include them!

Not in this context. It's too close to 'Heil Hitler!' and saying that can cause you a lot of trouble here.

But any one of 20 synonyms for Heil wouldn't cause a problem.....

No but to many Germans it may appear that Linguica did.

When I read something like "Heil Doom3" I know imediately that this has to come from an American. No German would ever find this funny. (But of course I know that it is supposed to be funny for you Americans and this is perfectly ok for me).

When I read something like "Heil Doom3" I know imediately that this has to be some news regarding Doom3 and Germany. That, and the fact it look very much like "hell" (Heck, they did that joke in Wolf3d!)
