    IGN Buys 3DGamers

    Linguica

    From 3DGamers:

BRISBANE, Calif. – February 9, 2005 -- IGN Entertainment, a leading Internet media company serving the games and entertainment enthusiast markets, today announced that it has acquired 3D Gamers (http://www.3dgamers.com), an online pioneer in the delivery of gaming news and file downloads. The acquisition increases the reach of IGN’s audience of game enthusiasts, and when added to IGN’s existing portfolio of successful free, subscription and pay-per-download services, further strengthens the web’s leading game file distribution network.

And so on. What will this mean for our beloved archives.3dgamers.com? Is Doom doomed? Will IGN consume us all? Stay tuned.

I have the feeling that 3d gamers has been
    consumed by coperate greed

I fear that 3d gamers will turn into another site where you have to pay in order to download your files (or wait in big ass lines in order to download your file if you refuse to pay your money)

I see sites growing into membership payments almost everyday (I remeber the days where you get to download free stuff out of IGN,Gamespot and other web sites in the early 90s but now they are all formed into sucky memberships and now it's almost impossible to downlaod for free nowadays because of big coperate companies are now taking over the Internet and not to metion
that most of the nude photography (their NOT porn sites) sites like Domai have turned into pay sites where now you have to join a stupid membership (and spending your money) in order to download all of the pictures...It's just insane and 3D gamers will be forced to jump to the same Bandwagan like the other web sites)

    Here ya go WW:

Questions and Answers about the acquisition of 3D Gamers

    Q. Why did we sell 3D Gamers?
    A. The gaming world has changed a lot in the nearly nine years since we launched 3D Gamers. We went through many changes and have grown a lot in that time, but to take the brand and web site to the next level we felt it would be best to achieve that as part of a larger family backed by more resources. IGN Entertainment came along at the right time with the right offer.

    Q. How much is IGN paying for 3D Gamers?
    A. The "three guys and a website" from way back in 1996 came out very well, thank you. We can’t disclose the transaction details but we feel that personally and from a business viewpoint it is a good deal.

    Q. Will 3D Gamers be redesigned into an IGN branded site?
    A. No, the 3D Gamers brand and web site will continue to exist. IGN acquired them because of their strength and growth potential, and it wouldn’t make sense to destroy that value by drastically changing them. Because 3D Gamers has become part of the IGN network you may see references to their other sites, but the site will remain the 3D Gamers you know and (hopefully) love.

    Q. Will registration or subscription be required for the web site?
    A. No, we remain committed to keeping the site freely accessible. However, some optional features or services are likely to be added in the future that may require registration or subscription. We would have explored those options sooner or later anyway, regardless of the acquisition by IGN, but the main features of the site will remain free.

    Q. Will our downloads continue to be free?
    A. Yes.

    Q. But the Indiana mirror was just shut down. Why?
    A. The owners of the Indiana mirror decided to retire it on January 1, but actually didn’t shut it down until late January. Consider it a parting gift. Shutting it down shortly before the acquisition was just a coincidence.

    Q. Does this mean that you're moving to a FilePlanet style system?
    A. No. FilePlanet and 3D Gamers each offer services in their own unique ways, reaching different audiences. We may share some things in the future when we find that there are opportunities in scalability, but there are no plans for turning 3D Gamers into a FilePlanet clone.

    Q. What will happen to the non-U.S. mirrors?
    A. We will re-evaluate all our mirrors and continue to provide services through those that offer the best user experience. We aim to improve our service for all our users, regardless of geographical location.

    Q. What will happen to the forums.3dgamers.com site?
    A. The forums will continue separate and unchanged, with the current moderating team.

    Q. I don’t believe you, 3D Gamers will disappear!
    A. Is that a question? Look at other sites that IGN has merged with or acquired, like GameSpy, Rotten Tomatoes and TeamXbox, and see how they are doing. 3D Gamers is here to stay.

    Q. Then what will be the most obvious effects of this acquisition?
    A. The web site will be better integrated with other IGN properties like Direct 2 Drive and GameSpy Arena, and the advertisements will change to those provided by IGN.

    Q. What are the former owners of 3D Gamers going to do?
    A. Frans P. de Vries and Piotr Kapiszewski will continue working in their current capacities, being responsible for, respectively, editorial content and business development at 3D Gamers within the IGN organization. John Van Essen is reducing his participation to part-time consulting and will be pursuing other non-gaming interests.

The only thing that gives you that message on the page is the link to a forum thread for feedback about the change, which must have been deleted. The questions and answers Chronoteeth spammed are at the bottom of the article Linguica linked above. Learn to browse the Internet!

No one's preventing you from doing so. Any good FTP tool should help you in minimizing the work required for it.

Grr, kinda reminds me of how EA Games is always buying out small companies, and how we will never see another c&c game, or a good James Bond game, or another Ultima, or, well you get the idea. They even own Free Radical so Timesplitters 3 probbably wont be any good either. I HATE EA! AHHH! Anyways we should all chant in unison so that they will never get thier hands on id.

If we'll never see another C&C game, how come EA recently announced that another C&C game is in development? Granted it doesn't stand much chance of being anywhere near as good as the old C&C games, but it's still being made.

As for good Bond games, I know a lot of people don't think much of Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, but Everything Or Nothing was well liked by the majority of reviewers and a large portion of the public.

Oh, and EA don't own Free Radical - they're simply publishing and distributing Timesplitters 3.

BTW several staffmembers of ID are multi-millionaires, so there isn't much chance of them being bought by anyone. They've had an exclusive distribution deal with Activion for a long time now, but the people who own ID are A. Carmack, J. Carmack, Cloud, Hollenshead and Willits.

Hasn't this happened before when ftp.cdrom.com went down? It wasn't a big deal then, so why is it a big deal now? There will always be someone willing to house doom stuff so long as their are people who are willing to download and play it.
