    Real-Time Cyb in 3057

    Cyb

Okay so that's not really what it stands for, but it should, damnit. Anyways Shaviro has notified me in the super-secret RTC-3057 IRC channel that he's posted a RTC 3057 hub1 progress report. It pretty much states that hub1 is nearly done and should be released once a certain French person makes some sounds and music for it. There's also other various infos about the project to read up on.

    Alright.

    a. you move like a guy wearing half a ton of armor.

Realism should never depreciate gameplay. I'm not saying that Halo is bad in this aspect, since I haven't played it, just stating that it's a bad argument.

    b. the story has plenty of originality and depth. you've just been playing DOOM too long.

Though I won't argue about Halo's story, since I don't know it, I don't see how playing DOOM for a long time would affect anyone's view of another game's story.

    c. you don't get the shotgun until two thirds of the way through the game, and even then the ammo isn't plentiful, which is why constant weapon swapping is required.

If you don't get the shotgun until two thirds into the game, that's worse than what sarge claimed, since it means for the most of the game you'll only have one decent weapon.

    e. it was as unlinear as a first person shooter like HALO needs to be.

"As unlinear as a FPS like Halo needs to be" doesn't say anything. How is the linearity of a game like Halo defined? Is the requirement that it's bad?

    f. ...yeah, but pretty nice to look at. and still FUN FUN FUN!

How can it be boring and fun at the same time?

    1. it IS slow and after jumping it takes about ten minutes to land again and there's absolutely no chance of circle-strafing while in flight. they should have upped the speed to something more like doom's

    2. the story IS weak, humans vs aliens, doom's "humans vs demons" plot is clearly vastly superior

    3. the weapons ARE terribly badly balanced, the sniper rifle taking out only one enemy at a time, heresy i say, they should have included a gun that can take out at least 20 in one go just by looking at them, a bit like doom's BFG

    4. i played it on console, which is a much better experience than using a mouse as it more closely emulates playing doom for the first time using only keys

    5. it IS linear, 1. enter area, 2. kill everything, 3. go to next area. i cant think of a single map in DOOM or any other FPS that's even similar to that level of linearity

    6. the map design is a bit repetitive in places especially the library levels, though i was busy trying to outfight the constant hordes of zombies to pay attention to such minor triva. much like the way that the fun of fighting and killing stuff in DOOM easily outweighs the decade-old graphics etc.

solution: play doom if you like doom. i liked halo and i liked half life and i liked quake and i liked quake 2. they're what we call "D I F F E R E N T" , look it up

as for the topic... i'm intrigued by the RTC-3057 project and will play it at 50% speed as the designers meant it to be, i might like it, i might hate it, if anyone else out there doesnt like it THEN DONT PLAY IT AND STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT

    sheesh

The driving sections would have been really cool if you had more freedom.

And the final levels were some of the worst copy and paste designs you'll ever see, fun the first time through but they rapidly become tedious. Imagine a doom wad like that, 9 levels that are basically the same with some monster changes here and there. Would you play it?

I really enjoyed HALO but it definately could have been better, fortunately the sequel adresses these issues.

    a. you move like a snail
    b. the "story" isn't worth the amount of integration it has into the game
    c. poor weapon balance (pistol and shotgun is all you need)
    d. incredibly weak max mouse sensitivity (and there's no config file to bump it more)
    e. linear as fuck
    f. boring map design

even still, i have to admit it's one of the better fpses i've played in recent years *sigh*

    g.Rediculous Computer Requirements.
    h.Poorly Optimized.
    i.The Deathmatch mode is BAD.

And speaking of RTC-3057, I don't mind the slowdown of footpace. The maps seem to be very complex.

Does ignoring problems make the world a better place?

A designer of an addon for a 10 year old game's decision to drop the player speed isn't really an "issue" that would have any effect on the world.

Maybe not on "the World" but apparently on Doomworld ;-P

I just played the one level RTC-3057 demo with a lower player speed. I don't see any problems changing the speed to 50%

change the imps to revenants, you'll want your speed back.

Im sure Shaviro, and all the other level makers will be aware of the speed problem and NOT turn it into Hell Revealed II (Great megawad btw) In fact im betting my money on that the gameplay will be quite good the demo is like a flashback to half life. The graphics, atmosphere, and scripting are unmatched.

Why would we want to place 50 revenants in a small room?
The final solution may very well be this: 60% player speed, no speed menu. 50% IS a little slow for walking/strafing, but 60% seem just right. If you want to play at 100%, just write -turbo 166 or whatever.

zdoom even allows you to set turbo in console so you can set it on a whim if the speed decrease (for the wad you haven't played yet) really annoys you. The levels, of course, will (obviously) be balanced for the speed decrease; so that's a truly idiotic statement to make. Throwing six revenants at the player is not an option when he moves much slower. One revenant, however, will present a much greater challenge than he does now. :)

anyone who ups the speed and says it's too easy will be ignored :P

I was ilustrating a point to Dron, it all depends on how you balance the difficulty. Being slow against an opponent thats designed to challenge a much faster player is pretty tricky. And your not going to realise the full impact playing against imps.

Well duh! Of course lowering the speed makes it more challenging - that's the freakin' point.

    to summarise:

    10 PRINT "SLOWER PLAYER MAKES GAME MORE CHALLENGING!";

    20 PRINT "BUT IT COULD BE FRUSTRATING FOR THE PLAYER!";

    30 GOTO 10

So you're going to drop the idea because a couple of people didn't like it?!
