    Ruined Doom 3

    kristus

In the wake of the Hexen Doom 3 TC's first release, another Doom 3 TC has surfaced. The Ruiner Doom 3 TC has had its first official release in the form of a beta version. The beta features 5 maps and an estimated 1 to 1-1/2 hours of game play.

Ruiner is a dark, nightmarish, fast paced third person action modification for Doom3. the player fights hordes of the damned using unique weapons, abilities and spells.

Ruiner is made by the same people that brought us Doom 3 and Quake 4 TCs like Hardquore 1 and 2, Fraggin Free, and Zombie Slayer.

Hmm... that should be "HardQore" and "Fragging Free". [/nitpickybastard]

But I enjoyed FF -- Might check this out seeing how I need to reinstall D3 for the Hexen mod anyway.

What is it with Doom 3 TCs having releases all of a sudden?

    I smell conspiracy. o_O

I guess it's a pretty good timing before the incoming release of new Id technologies and games, such as Rage :)

You'll need some good grasp of your keyboard and mouse controls, otherwise the monsters will eat you alive and you'll die (and restart) often. Also, use the levitation ability, it's much more usable than the grabber in RoE.

Finally, if at new game the view is still first person, press ctrl-alt-` to get the console and type the command "pm_thirdperson 1".

EDIT: On this mod it's also the first time my Doom 3 frame rate has lowered a bit :-/

I got up to the glowing blue demon and hit him with around 80 arrows before I got tired of the tedious mother fucker and called it quits. The bow is incredibly useless. Even on lesser enemies it's more effective just to run up and hack them apart with the sword. The fact that the crosshairs are slightly off doesn't help either. Also I had to try loading the game up twice because the first time I loaded it the camera was upside down.

Also the levitation ability is actually pretty annoying since my character has this annoying habit of dropping her weapon to use it, and again, the crosshairs are off so it's kind of useless.

Change weapon mode for the bow and it effectively becomes a rocket launcher.

Well, level 4 does indeed have a blatantly copy-pasted room. Generally, I like that they (probably like many others) made the player faster, jump good and removed the reloading. I gotta ask them at Doom3world if this is only a demo or are these all the levels.

Anyway, I'm at least thankful the mod survived enough to get a beta release, unlike notable others (Hell on Earth for example).

Strange, DownThemAll! doesn't seem to like ModDB. Any chance of anyone here putting up a mirror? :)

Stop bandwidth hammering and you can download it!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who was a bit dismayed by the product of the beta in stark contrast to the ZOMG AWESOEM MEDIA RELESES!1 Also, where is the background? What is the point of this game? With all of the reskinned Doom 3 monsters running around I honestly thought it was like the mother (or father) of all prequels with the protagonist fighting the same horde of demons in some sort of quasi- Van Helsing universe complete with retro modern (firearms AND steampunk themed medieval weaponry?) Painkiller style weapons.

Also, the framerate stayed at a comfortable, nay, lazy 15 frames a second, getting up only to grab a beer from the fridge and fall back asleep on the couch after drunkenly rubbing one out to the 3 AM adult infomercials. Way to make my 512 megs of GDDR2 hustle those GPU cycles! The first time I asked it to 'reload' the game (from the system tab, after disabling the stupid 8x AF that seems to be default in EVERY mod even though it can also be disabled by default), it responded by going into cardiac arrest / fap fury again and crashing Doom 3, increasing the desktop brightness by over 9,000 and dropping a turd on my keyboard. After restarting Doom 3, waiting, strangely enough, only 15 seconds for the first map to load (like last time) and watching the map load in, I got the same or worse 10 - 15 FPS and some door that when I touched I magically just glitched through it, as though I was playing mp through a dedicated server on the moon.

Final say, or tl;dr, I would say the demo is largely unimpressive just by token of how AWESOME it was hyped to be and then how much of a letdown it turned out to be.

Ninja edit - good to be back guys :)

Most of your complaints were about the story and how the game lagged because your computer is old.
