    The Dark Inside Me

    covaro

Ola has gone and done a whole page revamp. News, bug lists, add-on sections and more. It's all purty and techno like now too. =D

ENOUGH! Enough eulogies. Everything appears to be Darkening E2 right now. Of course it is one set of absolutely kickass levels and one of the few that actually has mood (which is more important that gameplay for me). Problems is that all this praise and glory and bow and scrape might actually stun the community. It's like if it isn't Darkening then it's nothing. Either you are Ola or you are None. Of course it isn't that bad already, but it could be. Therefore i will recommend, No more hyping. Just sit down an Play those goddamn levels. Maybe we could then have a discussion about what exactly made those levels so great, which would be much more fruitful. The other thing just scares people away.

Too many imps in level 1... I hate Imps. Very nice page redesign.

I think I get where Little Faith is coming from. There's a lot of elitism in the community right now. Just look at Ola's sig--it basically says "I'm Ola Bjorling, so kiss my ass." It's not too far of a stretch to see the same attitude coming from the crews on the working projects and the news sites (not to mention #doomroom ops).
It's [i]very possible[i] that we could get to the point where if someone isn't made by the current top authors (Afterglow, Ola, Nick Baker, etc.), or at least copies their work, or is hyped on DW, then nobody is going to take a look at it. That'll be a sad day but I can already see it coming :.

Levendis: That signature was a JOKE, and as you can tell, I've changed it. I did that long ago actually.

If someone feels there is elitism, then please go ahead and say so. I don't agree with that bullshit about how only the #doomroom OPs count. If someone does something nice it will get the publicity it deserves.

IMO it looked way better before. And I doubt that the HTML guru runs their pc in 800x600 res, because in my netscape window there is a huge gray box, about half the size of the screen. Make it more like TiC's page, with cool textures and shite! And I've been trying to make demos, but jesus... that thing crashes a LOT. gonna wait 'till it's been rejected.

If it's not made by an "elite" author, or not hyped on DW, it's not our fault that no one plays it... what, are we responsible for making sure that everyone plays everything? Go to CDROM.COM and download whatever you want from whoever you want, we certainly aren't stopping you.

Xenocide: If you haven't already emailed Ola w/ the problems could you elaborate on where you got crashes? Are you using a source port? The levels should run fine and we found a VPO in map4. Other then that + the savegame buffer in map9 nothing should crash the game. Reject probably wouldn't change anything regarding the game crashing.

That's already happened in the Quake community. I made a Quake III level that broke the mold of gothic/space crud and most sites that reviewed it gave it bad marks. I don't mind a poor review, as I can learn from it, but since my name isn't Iikka Keranen or Weibo de Wit my level sucks right away.

I find it difficult to believe that you, Covaro, and Mordeth don't understand your position within this community. If you guys report on a site update or a new project, people will go check it out; if you suppress it, nobody is going to find out about it. Whatever happened to the /newstuff Chronicles? You aren't stopping people from checking out new things but if you don't endorse it lots of people are going to figure it's not worth the download.

Let's take a quick straw poll here...how many people here have actually gotten and played some stuff from cdrom.com recently? Think to yourself: without going there, can you think of any of the new stuff in /newstuff? Do you ever go there if someone on DW or DN doesn't tell you about a new wad that's up?

No offense but it seems to me that you're hiding behind that "we're not forcing people to not look at things" defense. DW is arguably the most prominent site in the Doom community, and you think your recommendations don't have an effect on what gets played? How niave do you think we are?

I never go to cdrom.com, unless it's a direct link off DoomWorld or DoomNation.

I go there about every second day...

Reason being that so many cool wads by well known authors seem to go through there and they never get covered on any news sites. Then I read people whinging that no wads ever get released. Hmmm.

If someone was willing to send me an email every week detailing the good new stuff in /newstuff, I would post it every week so people knew what there was. Personally I don't check out CDROM.COM much anymore unless I know what I'm looking for.

Get used to it...I don't see that changing any time soon. The only reason why you consider guys like Ola and Afterglow to be "elite" is because they really ARE. I challenge you to show me some guy who has made better levels than Afterglow, Ola, and others who is an unknown. Their names are big because they have made them big.

Let me write to you the one and only Confucian hymn:

    Superiority in a person
    Should better not
    Nor should it worsen.

    It should consider everything
    From pussycat to honored king.

    Inferior people
    Need a steeple
    To climb and shout
    Their views about.

Meaning. . .yeah, Ola makes the best textures around, and Afterglow's levels are beyond compare. Mordeth, Linguica, and Covaro have built the best Doom news site in existence. That doesn't mean that these guys' word should be law in the community. Ideally, all it means is that they have talent and drive and enjoy sharing the results with other people.

But what the hell do I know anyway?

I can give evidence both ways on the subject - First, you don't have to be big to be someone. My Twice Risen site was put up on a high-school server tucked far away in the corner of the world, and I got e-mails when news sites started popping up asking if I wanted webspace. I had very little released then (and still don't) and I got recognized. Things hyped up after the Twice Risen pre-release, giving me a higher "status" if you will, but I still never see my name / levels in the top lists. When I started Operation: Save Twice Risen, I got about 70 pro-TR e-mails.

But I guess I can also say that I'm a victim of it, too... I don't have time to check CDROM.COM newstuff or even all the newssites and I do rely on DOOMWORLD to bring me the news of the latest, greatest, and worthwhile.

so yeah... what happened to /newstuff chronicles anyway?

Seriously...I'm not saying your levels are the best...I'm saying that we KNOW the people who have made better. We've heard of Malcolm Sailor. :)

Of course I have heard of him. But I am not the biggest downloader of levels and I don't think I have ever played or seen anything by him.
