    The /newstuff Chronicles #101

    deathz0r

Apologies for my lateness, but some certain family member insisted on taking over the computer for the rest of the day, making me late (well, it is Monday here) for your weekly dose of /newstuff. Anyway, I have five wads to delete from my HD, so I'll review them while they're still there. Oh yes, since Ling had a little cry about not having monsters in screenshots, I'll be putting them in this time. Oh yeah, I'm also rushing my ass off here because I'm very late, so I won't be going into that much detail as I usually do.

    • Abandoned Mines II by Kim "Torn" Bach - - This is a first map job by Torn, and it is a very good one at that. Designed for the FreeDoom project, this map replaces map26, and it is a very faithful tribute to the original Abandoned Mines. However, the only problem I really have with it is the amount of monsters crammed into this otherwise decent map. It says in the text file that the FreeDoom textures are required, but you still can check it out without them.
    • Blind Alley P., The Boardwalk by Gene Bird - - The second map in some mini series that I've never heard of before. Still, like Abandoned Mines II, it's overloaded with monsters, but unlike AMII, the detailing looks like a half-assed job which was finished in under 20 minutes. I believe it's supposed to resemble a neighbourhood, but it doesn't look like anything really noticable.
    • Doom Aesthetics Mod by WildWeasel - - Some Immoral Conduct wannabe that has the most ugliest Super Shotgun graphics that I've ever seen. It replaces all sounds, all weapon graphics and the former human enemies with mostly stolen graphics/sounds. It also has a dehacked patch inside, mostly to do with text changes and weapon attacks. Requires ZDoom.
    • NES Sounds V2 by The Unknown Comic/The Unknown Doomer - If your dialup couldn't handle the size of the original NES Sounds wad, then this is for you. However, the sounds sound really choppy, but that's the price you pay when you resample sounds from 44khz to 11khz. Also, I dunno why the hell s/he put two nicks in. I guess s/he's retarded or something.
    • Wheat Thin Fortress by DarkWolf - - DM level that requires a port that "loads flats from a PWAD", even though doom2.exe can do that if you rename the flat start and end lumps to FF_START and F_END. Anyway, I tested this level with ACBot, and the layout of the level is actually quite good for a 1-on-1. But, his weapon placement is very unbalanced, and his detailing is below-average. I might be a bit biased when saying this, but the most commonly used weapon in DM is the Super Shotgun, and the only way to grab it is going through the teleporter. If I made the map, I would of placed a BFG there and replaced all the other weapons with Super Shotguns and a few Rocket launchers. If he made the weapon placement good, I would of played this on ZDaemon.

as for the wads he chose, well the dm wads are top notch... but the single-player wads are sub par (besides Alm's and AV; and I haven't played Archvile46's). but that is just my opinion.

i've never played any of Erik's SP maps. only his Capture the Skull maps (teamplay that works within doom2.exe's limitations) and eadm4. speaking of which, eadm4 is another one to put in my list of maps that i like.

My only problem this week was that the reviews were hurried, which will hopefully be fixed in future releases...

of course it will be fixed.

BTW Torn I just played your map and I liked it. (I play through the /newstuff chronicles backwords...)

Btw, do you know that this map is my first one over 5sectors... :D
But thanks for comment, I like to know that others like my map... :)

Torn: you are taking my comments out of context... I bet your map is similar to Alex Parsons' work... some detail and attention to texturing and monster placement, but is only for one type of player.
However, I have not even seen it, I am just assuming (that is, I don't think your map is the 1337-type at all).

Well, I know it maybe are a little bit hard sometimes (maybe too many monsters). Well, my maps or others map can never be so good as maps in av and or other megawad, because the mappers have used alot of time on one map, not just a week like me... :)

    btw, who is alex parsons?-

Wow, does that suggest some releases are imminent?

Nice one Torn, I really liked that. It was over all too quick but very enjoyable! (That's an odd set of keys btw.)
Too many monsters in Abandoned Mines and Blind AlleyP, wtf?

Well, Maybe it was too high, at least in the area with the lift and the "mines". I don't know, heh. :)
And I know it is a quick one, like map26.

And now I serious need to start building my ccmap. :)

    in no particular order...

1337.wad, dwango6.wad, dogtag3.wad, Alien Vendetta, vex-doom.wad, supar1337.wad, tlsdm.wad, sopwith.wad, NESDoom, UDM series (excluding the maps i made), satarena.wad, Scientist, mockery 2, some of the wolfendoom wads, mountkng.wad, moo1m.wad, dwangot1.wad, knortdm.wad, judas22.wad, finalfrg.wad, doommall.wad, Doom: The Arcade Game, d2tourn.wad (the dehacked patch), Erik Alm's Capture the Skull wads, Skulltag, Toke's CTS wads, Abandoned Mines II, nuts.wad, Archvile46's Doom 1 SP wad, dc-xtra.wad (it's so horrible that it really cracks me up).

Well, at least none of my wads are in there. (which I'm mildly surprised at, as there are some pretty good wads in there - notably Scientist, Alien Vendetta and dome1m3 by Archvile 46 - that one's a bit big, but very detailed and realistic)

On a more on-topic note, I quite enjoyed both SP wads this week. Blind Alley was enjoyable (that wooden outdoor bit was quite tough!) and Abandoned Mines was authentic, rock hard and so tight on ammo that I had to berserk some Hell Knights/Barons to get 100% kills! (it's been a while since I did that...)

Hmm, I'd better watch out when I eventually release my wad. But still, he hasn't listed any of my wads on his list of hated wads (which is certainly a good sign), and I haven't actually heard his opinion on any of my wads yet.

EDIT: Rich Sham's latest map was good, but I couldn't find an exit.

The exit is outside of the castle in the small wood shed where everything started. :) It becomes available just prior to the last big battle.

Some authors who also write review columns sometimes bring in a reputable guest reviewer to review their own work when it is released. Either that or just state that it is out, give the bare factual details, and invite comments from readers.

Unless I misunderstood, that was a list of wads deathz0r liked. Either way, there are some pretty odd choices in there. If my credentials as a wad reviewer were being questioned, I don't think I'd list 1337 and supar1337 among my preferred wads (even if I did get some enjoyment out of them).

oops, I should have noticed that... (doh!)

The guest reviewer thing might be worth trying. Provided that I can find one....

(I'll think about it nearer the time)

Torn: http://www.doomworld.com/sda/op_846.zip is what I think of your map. :)
good secrets. no plasma?... not even cells?
pretty cool though... if you had to name one map that it is similar to, I think you'd name Map26.
good job. I think it deserves more praise than it has received. must download, IMO.
    I'm off to idunno.wad... mmm, Cyb-map good...

No, the monster count was fine. It was the same reason I enjoyed Blind Alley O, lots of carnage and pretty tough, too.

(there was a DooM 1 map called Io Anomaly that also had a high monster count, and that made it more enjoyable)

Poor deathz0r for having to share the computer with other family members!!!

The reviews hardly make a difference

Yeah, I think that the aim of the review is just to give someone an idea about a map, to make the person decide if he is gonna dl it or not. At times when the reviewer said a map is good, I found it crappy. And the contrary.

hah. Deathzor: yeah, looks pretty dumb the way I edited my post.
I meant to say that it was similar to Map26, so he did his job well... but I took that part out. %-)
OMG, it is almost Sunday again. :-o

Missed like 6 Chronicles here in like the past 2-3 weeks. Looks like those have vanished in the goddamn abyss, eh?

Not quite. You can check out Newstuff #100 - the best week for wads in a long time.

You can probably access #98 and #99 as well, by going to the Doomworld News forum and displaying older threads.
