    The /newstuff Chronicles #42

    AndrewB

Ten new WAD files uploaded in the past week, all brought together in our weekly presentation of the new things found in Newstuff.

    • Xenon Station II by Alex Adolphsen - One deathmatch map for Doom 2. Overall, this one is of pretty good quality. It has typical deathmatch map design. Fortunately, it's not a dull, redundant map. It is reasonably colorful, but slightly moody. There are hallways with crates, well-lit rooms, a large storage area. There's also a music replacement. It's not exactly melodic, but at least it's somewhat original.
    • Zsound by Zach Anderson - Twenty-seven music replacements for DOOM. E1M1 to E3M9. This is a garbled collection of semi-random MIDI files, most of them mediocre, none of them really appropriate for any DOOM level.
    • Come To A Head by Deadnail - One map for Doom 2. A single-player map, with a mostly linear design. Square rooms, not many angled lines. Rooms and hallways which are mostly empty. A couple of outdoor areas. Health and ammo balance is nothing spectacular, both of them somewhat on the stingy side. That's really about all there is to say.
    • Omni-Directional Cluster by Deadnail - One deathmatch map for Doom 2. Small, dark, a four-way mirror design. Wood with metal trim is the entire texture theme. There is also a music replacement from Duke Nukem 3D.
    • Oversimplified Complexity by Deadnail - Another very small deathmatch map for Doom 2. This has a labyrinth theme to it, with some green stone. A few weapons, and a gentle, moody music replacement.
    • Last Blood by Deadnail - A single deathmatch map for Doom 2. This map is a little larger, and a little more diverse. An outdoor area, a couple of indoor areas. The same music replacement as Oversimplified Complexity. It's getting better.
    • 8 Grams Of Lead by Deadnail - Now we're getting somewhere! Well, sort of. One deathmatch map for Doom 2, again. This one has significantly better detail, lighting, prettiness. More height variations. The weapon placement is also adequate. It comes with a pretty good MOD music replacement as well. Requires ZDoom.
    • Post Mortem Experiment by Various Authors - Six deathmatch maps for Doom 2. "Last Blood" and "8 Grams of Lead" is also included in this WAD. As for the other four maps, they show some amazing creativity. A castle level in a sea of lava is my favorite of the bunch. There are many "secret" ledges, platforms, lifts, tricky hops. There are other maps as well which show some quality. A lot of very dark areas. There are also various MOD music replacements, which can really help you get into the "groove." Requires ZDoom.
    • Dt-ssg3 by Don Tello - A very simple modification this time. The super-shotgun is replaced with the weapon from the game Serious Sam. Enhanced DOOM port recommended.
    • Mines by Bryant Robinson - One deathmatch map for Doom 2. This one does take on sort of a "mine" feel to it. Weapons are placed appropriately in their own areas. There are a few new textures in this map, and a music replacement which is an imitation of a track from Goldeneye 64. There are a few new sounds as well. Enhanced DOOM port recommended.

Being the artist who drew the hissy sprite I can assure you he's not just a miniature cacodemon :-> I tried to make him look like the real thing.

Hey, has anyone noticed that in the Skulltag beta, if you add the Linguica bot, he will talk to Hissy even when Hissy isn't there? That's getting on my nerves.
