    The /newstuff Chronicles #50

    AndrewB

There are eleven new DOOM modifications this week, all brought together in our weekly issue presenting the new things found in Newstuff.

    • Cave Of The Heretic by Martin Koch - An impressive map for Heretic. Although not very difficult, this map feels just like the real thing. It has a very well-defined Heretic atmosphere. Fountains, caves, some furnished indoor areas. It should be enjoyable for anyone craving some fresh medieval action.
    • Lemming Player Skin by Mark - The title speaks clearly, a skin for ZDoom/Legacy. The Doom space marine is replaced with a tiny 4x11 miniature person image. This would obviously make things interesting in Deathmatch. It makes some high-pitched sounds as well, and it has an interesting death frame. Enhanced DOOM port required.
    • Wet by Andy Mckie - A single player / deathmatch map for Doom 2. This is Andy's usual theme, space base textures, with lots of underwater areas and rooms over rooms. It can be quite a bit difficult in single player, and somewhat large for Deathmatch. Requires Doom Legacy.
    • Momesrus by Mike Fredericks - A simple yet interesting map for Doom 2, running on Map07. One Cyberdemon in a round arena. A blood-filled pool and some torches help add a spooky atmosphere to this map. No weapons other than berserk and chainsaw are provided, depending on the difficulty level. As well as single player, this is of course playable in cooperative mode and even deathmatch. You can also download the low detail version, fully playable with doom2.exe. Enhanced DOOM port recommended.
    • Phobia by Kristian Käll - Yes, it is the map that everyone is looking forward to. Believe me, it doesn't disappoint. That is, unless you have anything less than a Voodoo3 and a P3 550, in which case it may be quite hard to play. No, this is not just another pretty face. In fact, it is perhaps one of the most thrilling, creepy adventures in Doom add-on history. You must find special objects, take them to where they need to be taken. There are even some short cinematics and truly breathtaking areas. And no, the map is not unplayable difficult. It's just right. Requires Doom Legacy.
    • Hell's Arena by Simon Broadhead - One map for Doom 2. It starts out with little to no monsters. You'll eventually have to wade your way out of a slew of carnage to finish the level. It was intended to be a challenge, but for many it would nothing short of impossible. Not too much detail, and most of the health and ammo is provided in the area of carnage.
    • Angel by Prower - One single-player map for Doom 2. It has an interesting spacey metal and brick design, and lots of monsters. Lots and lots of carnage. Staying alive is quite a challenge, although ammo supplies aren't likely to run out. You will constantly find yourself bitten in the neck by monsters, so the battle can get quite frantic. This map doesn't go overboard with detail, yet it still looks quite nice. A few puzzles as well. Be careful how you proceed, or you may find yourself hopelessly stuck.
    • Nexus by Brad Spencer - Another single-player map for Doom 2. This one simulated five levels in one actual map. Each time you find your way through each small area, it is marked clearly on the wall. This map prides itself on being very challenging. You do find yourself constantly swarmed with monsters, but the right strategies will keep you alive. This is the kind of map that is best played while constantly saving.
    • Bloodsport by Virgil - A six-level Capture The Flag modification for Skulltag. These six maps each take on a space base atmospheric universe theme, if that makes sense to you. Each map is extremely large, with lots of huge outdoor and indoor areas. Map02 is perhaps the most interesting, with very low gravity, allowing for huge leaps and bounds across the map. Lava filled maps, water-filled maps, metal-filled maps, quite a variety of themes. There are six very pleasant MOD music replacements as well. Requires Skulltag.
    • Hell's Maw 2 by D-Man - A single-player map for Heretic. Too many monsters, enough to slow down your internal clock. Not much detail in this map, a few basic really large square rooms. However, if you want to slap on "quicken" and take a run through this map, it just might be enough to give you a healthy case of brain fog, if you're into that sort of thing.
    • Oda Calone ECT by Josef Griffiths - Five maps for Ultimate DOOM, E1M1 to E1M5. This is one of those WADs where you blast away swarm after swarm of monsters. Not much detail in any of the maps. Very plain textures and no proper alignments, but the playability seems decent. Not overwhelmingly difficult. There seems to be just enough health and ammo to get you through the maps. There is the odd tricky spot to get by, and there's lots of height variation. Enhanced DOOM port required.

Nexus is near impossible.. on UV anyway.
"Intended to be played with doom2.exe -- Ports alter gameplay, and gameplay is paramount."
It's nice to hear that from someone else...

    Ebola's the man.

Well, at least Nexus is near impossible in a good sort of way. A well thought out way. Too many maps are impossible in a "Ooh, this is a tough map. Good luck! Oop, running out of ammo? BAM YOU'RE DEAD!! AAAHAHAHAHHAHAAA LOSER!!" sort of way. It's why I look upon many difficult maps in a negative sense.

Are you with telewest(blueyonder). They have been dodgy all week, after about ten minutes everything just stops working, I better hurry this up or I wont have time to finish.

Heh Nexus was cool. Hell Revealed, go away. :p

Although I would rather get the plasmagun to get the real Arcade feel cause the Sshotgun isn't very arcady. ;) I didn't get past the second level :p I suck.

I agree with AndrewB, but I reckon you will be nocking out some great wads before long, my own early wads are a total embarrasment to me now (although I do use them as templates for new wads). Dont let the lack of praise get you down, for a first effort these levels are fine. I have to admit I ran through with monsters turned off. The best tip I can think of is download and study some of the better known wads like GothicDM or the Darkening and let them inspire you to greater things.

Bloodsport is a pretty cool set of maps. Probably the most amazing ctf maps I've ever seen done for Doom. They are huge . . . I am only halfway through exploring them. Who has ST servers running?

I am working on a Skulltag map... UAC_Bridge...

Hey and you guys, stop complaining about maps being too hard; that's because you are playing them in ultra-violence. Maps are meant to be played on I'm Too Young to Die, playing them on Ultra is a waste. Then again you seem to have some testes-problem about "showing off you skills"... It's all right, it's single player... No one is around to see you fail... that's what I always tell myself...

Well, it doesn't matter in my levels because I never set items for specific difficulties. All the same on every skill.
Next five level wad I release is gonna be a deathmatch one, and for DooM II.
    <font size=1><samp>or maybe Ultimate DooM...</samp></font>

I think levels today should be challenging for the average doomer on ITYTD, and really hard to beat for the more skilled players on UV and above. The reason why you set different skill levels is that more people can enjoy playing them. So when a level is too hard on UV, switch to a lower skill level and try again. Unless you are already Anders Johnsen or Adam Hegyi or some other Compet-N god (no, AndrewB, PL01 does not count) there are definitely people that are more skilled than you, for which the higher skill levels may be perfect. So don't whine about levels being too hard before trying them on all difficulty settings.

Are you describing Alien Vendetta? That's a bitch on ITYTD, well... the two levels I played anyway.

Yeah his old levels were stinky and you can still find them at Doom Heaven. 8)

But we all do stinky levels to start with, except me off course.

If I do new versions of the crappy ones will you take them off the page? it bothers me that people are still downloading them. It might put them off trying the newer ones.

Hey thanks, Opulent. I'm working on another one, but with more thinking and puzzles. It'll still have the large-arena feel though.

You have to use DOOM Legacy to play it. And DON'T tell me you don't know what Legacy is. :)
