    The /newstuff Chronicles #85

    Liam

Thank you for shopping at /newstuff, that'll be four PWADS please.

    • Foul Ruin by Alex Parsons - - Alex Parsons releases yet another map this week, the most challenging one in his series so far. Replacing Doom 2 Map01, Foul Ruin takes place in a dank stone labyrinth filled with demons, traps, and obstacles. Much more varied and interesting than previous Parsons maps, which were consistent almost to the point of being boring, you're never quite sure what Foul Ruin will force on you next. It's a great challenge on UV; play with the 'run through the map like a madman and shoot stuff' attitude and you'll break your quickload key. The map looks great without detailing to the point of slowing Zdoom down to 3 FPS, and the gameplay is fresh, exciting and balanced... a worthy download without a doubt. Advanced Doom port required.
    • MAD STUFF FOR DOOM 2 by Paul Corfiatis - - Paul Corfiatis creates this 6-map wad for Doom 2 almost 9 years after its release to demonstrate the shocking and widely-unkown fact that the doom monsters are stupid and can kill each other. Consisting of six (probably) intentionally terrible-looking maps and offbeat sound/music replacement, it warns 'serious doomers' in the text file that this 'may not be worth the download'. Unless you get a kick out of seeing your favorite doom monsters perform various entertaining feats such as 'hurt themselves' and 'hurt other demons', I really recommend that you not waste seconds of precious download time that you could be using to play Map20 or something...
    • Into the Breach by Philip Renshaw - - Here we have a simple but fun single-player Doom 2 map replacing Map01. Breach.wad takes place in a fortress of stone and wood, vaguely similar in theme to some of the later Doom 2 originals (although much brighter). There's very little in the way of detail. It's obvious the author was focused was on gameplay... Into the Breach provides a considerable challenge on Ultra-Violence, even for the seasoned Doomer. The map is small but the time it takes to clear each room without killing yourself ensures that it'll be a long road out of Hell regardless. Nothing too exciting but worth the download if Foul Ruin wasn't enough for you.
    • Complex 867 by Simon "Volte-Face" Broadhead - - I'm finishing this week off with yet another single-player map running on Doom 2 Map01. Complex 867 has good looking rooms and bad looking rooms, gameplay highs and gameplay lows alike. It covers more than one theme, as you teleport from tech base to marble fortress and back. This one doesn't take up a lot of space on the automap but, like Into the Breach, there's enough opposition to make sure it doesn't end too quick. There's a ton of secrets to be found (17 total), some obvious, some cryptic, and some just useless. The ammo/health balance is good enough and there's a good variety of cramped, claustrophobic rooms and hallways and gigantic outdoor battlefields to keep the gameplay interesting. Safe to ignore but a fun experience anyway. Advanced Doom port recommended.

    Recommended Comments

Hey guys, this is Phil Renshaw here, author of Into the Breach. I would appreciate any comment (both good or bad) on my Wad. I whipped up Into the Breach in three days simply as a devertion to my Exam Studies but now that they are over (yah!) I plan on making a new wad which will be hopefully bigger and better than my previous attempts. So any feedback on what you liked and disliked about my level would be greatly appreciated and will help me make better maps.

I thought it was really good. It was really challenging. It
took me about 55 minutes to make it all the way through. Health and
    ammo balance are perfect.

It's got Hell Revealed-esque difficulty, though it's laid out so that
it's acutally possible. Though it's not overly detailed or artistically
    brilliant, it is "fun".

I recommend it to everyone, but only play it if you have about an
hour and a half of free time.

    On another note: Complex-867; comments?

Well, I thought this was a pretty good level, especially for 3 days work. Architecture could stand to be a bit more detailed, but that's about all that could be improved. The health and ammo balance was pretty damn good, although you could stand to lose some of the health I think. I finished with 100% health and a bunch of 25% kits still laying around the level (I was playing on Ultra Violence, anything less just isn't fun) and 200% blue armor. I only had about 16 shells left, cuz I love to use the shotgun, but I had 400 bullets left, mainly because of all the chaingunners you use. I also had 2 rockets and no cells left. I finished it in about 25-30 minutes (had to back track a bit because I reloaded a few times). I think my favorite room was probably the 'library', I had quite a few good battles with the Barons in that room. I also liked the last major battle, after you hit the swith at the top of the narrow stairway and you go back down into the circular room, that was a pretty good fire fight there. I lured alot of the Barons into other rooms though, mainly so I could actually maneuver around them. All in all this is a pretty good level, mainly because of it's wonderful gameplay, never a dull moment! Really the only improvements are aesthetic, just a bit more variation in the architecture and it'd be a really good level. Well, hope I was at least somewhat helpful, and now back to doom!

Thanks for your comments so far. I'll do my best to improve my architecture, but hey, I think i'm the only person in the history of my high school to fail grade 7 art. So it may very well be easier said than done...

On another note I've already emailed the author of the wad Complex 867 but I'll say it again here.

Overall I thought this was a good level. My initial feeling was that it was a 'better' version of my own level. Like my level it has a lot of good fights, it has more inventive traps and a better level of detail (but certainly the detail could be improved)

There is one major bug that I have found however. Don't try to run through any windows around the yellow key are, you may find yourself stuck behind a red door.

If anyone played Shadowcaster (my Heretic episode) last week, I would appreciate your opinions/comments on it, so I can take them on board when I start my next wad project (which will be a 9 level Ultimate DooM episode)

As for this weeks wads, I've just downloaded them so I'll play them today and post a review of them later tonight (I'm 8 hours ahead of you)

Heh, just got through blasting through Breach.wad. It was quite fun. I like the Zimmer, Wood, and Metal layout of the level, and it had some reasonably good architecture (like the starting room). One thing that made me mad though, was near the end, when all the revenants and chaingunners come out to play; the revenants bombarded me with rockets and I was cut down with chaingun fire by the chaingunners! God that made me mad! Oh well. It was a very good level.

Foul Ruin by Alex Parsons - Quite large and very nicely done.

That one is going to take some work for me. There are a lot of bad guys in it in UV, and they are tough on someone who is just getting into the map. I am sure I will do better when I learn the map better.

    A very worthy download.

Breach: this is a tough one. Great traps and monsters (especially the library and caged outdoor area), and also the low amount of rockets and cells really made a difference to the gameplay, forcing you to rely on the supershotgun a lot. Perhaps a bit too many bullets and shells, but the low amounts of rockets and cells partially balances that. Detail could be improved in some areas (although the start room is nice) but the gameplay is spot on, more of the same please.

Complex 867: similar to above. A bit too many bullets and shells, but low rockets and cells again made for more interesting and challenging gameplay. I also liked the environments and the way they changed throughout (green marble to hi-tech blue to outdoor base).

Foul Ruin: very, very, very hard. In every way possible. (monsters, ammo, weapons, health) It took me about 40 minutes to complete, but is pretty good looking in some places, and more secrets than I have ever seen in a level. Pretty good.

Mad stuff for DooM 2: mad.

I am downloading it now. Can't wait to play it.Those screenshots look
great! I love wads that have gothic/medevil settings in them. Also can I help you with that Ultimate doom project of yours? I'm bored.

"The Breach" was... okay, I guess. The architecture was very, very simplistic. Now, I'm no detail whore who insists every level have 5 billion sidedefs or anything, but some detail would be nice. The gameplay was pretty good, the only part I disliked was the area with the bookshelves. The "pull the switch and spent a minute taking out the barons with your SSG" gameplay got boring there fast. Other than that, good gameplay.

Well, one of its levels will be a Phobos level, another one will be a TFC-type gothic level, so you could give me some ideas/tips on how to make good looking levels of those types. (I'm sure you can help there, as you love gothic levels)

(by the way one of its levels will have a triple 3D bridge in it, as I have successfully created one in a test wad)

About The Breach- I liked it. Personally, I don't care if anything has good architecture or not, because I don't think that really matters much in a game such as Doom2. As for gameplay, I liked it; a bit too many goats for my standard, but I still really enjoyed it. A good level...

I enjoyed it very much, a really nice clean challenge, with plenty of Barons! (/me likes)

I got killed four times on ultraviolence, each time by a chaingunner. Please create some more nice maps for us all.

I also like the latest wad from Alex, very long-playing and challenging, well done.

I'm currently in the earliest stages of my next map. Unfortunatley I can already tell that this is going to take me A LOT longer since I'm trying to add more detail this time around (but it definatley won't push the doom2.exe to its limits.......)

Unfortunatley I don't have heretic so I can't comment on ShadowCaster but if it is anything like the last effort of Ultimate Doomer that I played (Frag Port) I'm sure that it will play just fine! I'm also looking forward to looking at that tripple bridge you have planned ;)

I also just played through Foul Ruin and I must say that this is a very good map which everyone should download and play. The gameplay is great and it is well detailed as well.
