    The TEKWALL flaws are barely visible in 320x200 with lowest gamma correction on a misconfigured 1993 CRT monitor, the only true way to experience the game.

    So, I had a thought about the TAS route for Doom ep2. It should save ~4 seconds to kill the cyberdemon with only plasma (not just due to the higher damage rate, but also avoiding the weapon-switching delay). Playing normally (without SR50 or slowmotion), it takes ~4 seconds to pick up the plasma gun and cell pack near the exit on E2M2, which gives more than enough extra ammo. Assuming that this can be optimized to ~3 seconds with TAS, there's a chance to save a second. Another (split-)second could potentially be saved by skipping the plasma on either E2M3 or E2M4 (not sure if the one on E2M3 can be skipped, since it comes with an extra energy cell). These are just rough estimates, and would need to be tested by an expert.

    By the way, I always thought the same thing about the E1M1 secret switch. John Romero totally went George Lucas on that one. Ditto about the addition of the Nightmare! difficulty level, which makes it harder (but on the other hand, more important) for Doomguy to shoot first.

    E1M7 E2M2 MAP11 MAP29 easy peasy lemon squeezy Pretty strong top 8, though I'm disappointed that MAP08 didn't make it.

    The good ideas of Map14 have been executed better in later wads. E1M7 is still the pinnacle in its genre.

    The current metal textures are too noisy. Proposed replacements: I don't really like the pipes on rw33_3; not a big deal though, as it's a rarely-used texture. Some alternate metal surfaces that could be useful for other textures (not necessarily freedoom): Edit: original versions (slightly too dark)

    I'm wondering if the right thingy couldn't be removed entirely. It's... unbalanced. A smaller control panel somewhere in the middle ought to suffice to add visual interest.

    Nice! I thought of it as being a round blob with four tentacles on it, pretty much. I guess it also needs a weapon. It could be fitted with a cybernetic structure -- one huge gun on each side of the "head", perhaps connecting to a large metallic implant on the back side. Something like this (viewed from the side):

  20. I appreciate stairs. Running up stairs is more fun than waiting for elevators, both in real life and in Doom. I understand the need to put elevators in maps (to accommodate wheelchair-bound space marines), but when they are necessary, it's good to have an alternative route that doesn't require stopping (is there anyone who prefers taking the middle path on E1M4?). If the elevator is the only way up, then I appreciate when it at least has the decency to lower itself automatically to minimize the waiting time.

    Just how many Doom WADs or mods are there?

    I don't recall writing such a program, but it should be a trivial programming exercise: just add the area of all subsectors. Though you might have to worry a bit about weirdness resulting from mapping tricks, broken maps, or broken node builder output...

    Clumsy with the command line perhaps, but not so clumsy running :D You did seem to get stuck on the last shotgun guy in map04 for a split second; I couldn't tell if the SSG reload animation was the problem, but assuming it was, could you kill him faster by switching to the regular shotgun (first killing the chaingunner with one regular shotgun hit)?
