  5. So, here I am.

This has been a difficult 24 hours, to say the least. I recognize that moderating decisions haven’t been very popular here as of late. I also realize what’s been flying around has been a lot of misinformation and vitriol. So here’s what I’ll address.

    1. I have always been as transparent as I can be about my own moderating decisions. If I ask someone to message me, it’s usually because there’s little sense in continuing to derail the thread the moderating decision was made in. I will always refer people to a second opinion or an admin if they do not find my decision was agreeable.

    2. I don’t have control of what other moderators do. I will address a non-public decision (i.e. a warning) as best I can but I won’t always have the answer, unfortunately. We mods talk a lot to each other but we don’t talk about every single action we take.

    3. I realize that it is not great that there is no FAQ, public staff page, or rules. This was something that was an issue long before I came on board and there have obviously been some attempts to address this. We’ve been working as hard as we can on it but rule-making on such a widely diverse public forum can be difficult, to say the least. I have said many times in moderating discussion that I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for people to receive warnings and sometimes not know what actions they could take to prevent being warned in the first place. This is something that will be addressed as soon as humanly possible. It will not happen overnight.

    4. I tend to take as hands-off a moderating approach as I possibly can, but that does not mean there will be no consequences for shit-posting or shit-headery. Some people seem to think that any moderation action is a bad thing, and that approach simply does not work for this forum, due to the volume and diversity of members.

Lastly, Endless, I’m going to address you, by saying that despite what has happened, I dearly loved and appreciated the Wadazine and its efforts. I loved contributing to it. I loved watching you grow into an avid reviewer and mapper. And that hasn’t changed. I hope you continue to do well for yourself, wherever your journey goes. And I mean that, sincerely. I can’t say I’m not disappointed at what has happened, but I will never regret the past year of contributions and fun we had.

My door is open for anyone to talk to me, leave me constructive feedback about moderating, how to improve the site, etc. I’ve fielded all kinds of feedback from all sorts of places and people since I’ve become a mod and I appreciate the love and passion that you guys still put into this site and its longevity. But most importantly, I just want to know if something is a problem before it blows up. I don’t want anyone sitting here feeling like they can’t touch me, can’t talk to me, can’t look in my direction because I’ll ban them if they do it wrong- that has never been my M.O. I’m empathetic to a fault and I’ll always do my best to level with people. Just talk to me. I’ll answer, in kind.

@roadworx I just wanted to say that your point doesn't make a whole lot sense. Mappers banned from Doomworld "don't have anywhere else to go" apart from DB? Why do they need a forum to make and publish maps? Even major collaborative mapsets like BTSX have been coordinated in private and published without needing Doomworld threads to do it. Plus there are no shortage of Doom-related Discord servers that people can join nowadays to get involved with things. Or make your own forum. Or contact the Doomworld admins, and ask if there's a possibility that the ban might be lifted. There are plenty of options. This idea that "if you're banned from Doomworld then your only option to participate in the community is to hang out with a forum full of toxic pieces of shit" is complete nonsense.

  8. This weekend I put together designs for these backdrops for displaying my Doom miniatures. These are just some initial prototypes but the basic idea works. I wrote a Python script that does perspective transformations from a Doom screenshot to generate floor and curved wall patterns. When assembled and viewed from the right angle it looks like the figures are "inside" the screenshot.

I'm seeking feedback for my Vanilla Doom Smooth Weapons mod which I think is now close to ready to release. Instructions are in the included text file; please take a look and let me know what you think. If you encounter bugs please let me know, and for the record, vanilla demo desyncs count as bugs. The only bug I'm currently aware of is that the chainsaw jumps about on ZDoom-based ports.

You might be right - I haven't seen truecolor rendering in action so I don't have a strong opinion. But the screenshots _bruce_ posted in that thread were interesting. In some ways I feel like it's potentially less disruptive than higher res/uncapped framerate.

I think you mentioned experiencing motion sickness :) To be absolutely clear: I'm nowhere near as hardline about higher resolution as I might seem. As mentioned, on balance I think a "despecialized edition" should have a limited increased resolution. I mostly just want to make people think about these things: what's the qualitative effect that a change like this has? It's easy to take it for granted.

Also to be clear: these aren't Chocolate Doom things. Hi-res and uncapped framerate don't belong in Chocolate Doom. But I'm interested in the idea of a limited spinoff port/project that potentially would incorporate them, along with other non-code related changes. My current shortlist for "Despecialized Doom" would probably be:

      • Minor Sprite fixes
      • Minor Dehacked tweaks (there's one associated with the sprite fixes project which fixes some firing frames)
      • Perkristian's hi-res sounds
      • SC-55 music packs
      • Smooth weapons
      • Limited higher resolution, and widescreen support. Maybe pick some kind of standard doubled widescreen resolution and then do the Chocolate-style resampling.
      • Hi-color / 32-bit color depth - _bruce_'s work was very interesting in this regard.
      • Maaaaaaybe uncapped framerate. I'm not sure.

"lel". Stuff like that is usually an indication that someone's been reading 4chan for too long, so apologies if I inferred too much.

Yes, using Chocolate Doom to develop, but testing across several ports. You raise a very good point about additional fidelity, or to put it another way: if there was a "Doom: Despecialized Edition", which things should it include or not include?

Certain things are black and white: it should certainly include the fixed sprites, and should certainly not include any fancy gameplay changes like new monsters, new weapons and whatnot. But for me at least, higher resolution and unlocked framerate are something of a grey area. I'm not sure whether they should be in there, and I have some complicated thoughts about it.

I remember reading a review of something a while back - I forget exactly what, it may have been the remastered episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, or maybe it was something about old Doctor Who episodes. Anyway, the point it made was, "all this higher fidelity is great, but the downside is that now you can see how cheap all the sets are, and that spoils the magic a bit".

I kind of feel the same about Doom. The textures, sprites and also the level geometries are all pretty low resolution, but if you're playing at 320x200 you don't notice because the screen itself is low res enough that it's hard to discern that level of detail anyway. But bump the resolution and frame rate up and suddenly everything can start to look very flat and boring indeed.

On balance I'd say that a "Despecialized Edition" should probably increase the resolution to 640x400 (but no more) and keep the original 35fps frame rate. But that's just me, and I'm well aware that it's an entirely subjective thing that a lot of other people will have different opinions about.

You can't use -merge twice. Maybe that's why? The second -merge will be ignored, so the -deh will probably cause a crash because of missing sprites.

Yep. I've been stacking a bunch of them up to quite nice effect: Chocolate Doom + this + hi-res sound pack + sprfix19 + DMXOPL makes for a very nice combo.
