    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

Same here, it comes with the territory of being 'good'. In the context of this thread though I think that the way to approach them is to include WADs that require SR50 (for example) rather than assume that people will learn it for skips on other maps.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

My thoughts exactly. If it was about speed then map difficulty could be measured by glide / rj difficulty rather than standard play. That's why all the playthroughs I've linked are UV max runs.

UV Continuous Play vs HMP All Pistol Start

As a (semi) side note - looking down at anyone for however they play Doom is silly. If they're playing Doom then it's all good, who cares. I know nobody has tried to gatekeep (bar the jokey poll option) in this thread but I feel like it is a sentiment that some people may hold.

UV Continuous Play vs HMP All Pistol Start

'Built for continuous play' often boils down to 'medikits at map exit'.

UV Continuous Play vs HMP All Pistol Start

Pistol start by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, All day. I only play continuous when I'm farting around or if I'm playing early 90s wads. If I die in, say, a '95 wad I'll do a pistol start for that map then keep playing continuous.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

Very true. There is certainly a much more efficient way to improve rather than playing every map on this list. I wonder how we can reconcile speed and accessibility. I like the idea of having a smooth gradient so anybody at any skill level can find somewhere manageable (and possibly new) to start. Actually, I'll edit the post with your suggestions, that's the best way IMO. Btw I was hoping you'd share your 2 cents so thanks. All very good points. I had to learn the hard way that saveless on every WAD definitely helps you improve but boy does it take a while (my first hr run was almost 17hr). Edit: I'll add Vanguard to the list later today and will add a third note outlining the 3 wad progression you've explained. Edit 2: @Deadwing I'll add AA and Valiant just below Sunder. AA > Valiant > Sunder. Later today I'm going to go through and add a bunch of other WADs like Dimensions and other hard WADs. The hard end of the spectrum will get really fleshed out.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

Thanks for all the input everyone. I've added TNT and SIGIL and I'm going to carve out some time this weekend to add a whole slew of WADs. I'll have more time to reply to individual people and get more feedback too. Thanks again.

    Perception of Doom

Playing on -fast adds tremendously adds to the fear. Pinkies go from docile yet annoying to the scariest motherfuckers out there. A CP built around -fast would be cool.

Nihility is great. But dude, 5 posts in a row lol - you can edit your post to add info instead.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

I'm going through the backlog of mentioned WADs and adding them currently. There's many that I haven't played through properly so if you see any errors in either the order or the description text please let me know. I'll be adding a lot more over this weekend so keep 'em coming. Edit: I'm particularly interested in people's feelings on me placing Rush fairly low on the difficulty scale. I personally found it a lot easier than HR but I'm not sure what other people's experiences are.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

I've lumped in E4 with the rest of doom.wad with an addendum stating that it is harder in parts. I've added Rush and No Chance as well. I'll add more when I get home from work. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! @Armaetus This brings up an interesting issue - WADs with generally similar difficulties. I originally didn't want to include Fava as I also would place in the same spot as doom.wad. However, having 2 possible wads per 'difficulty' could be useful so as to add a bit of diversity and offer further practice if the jump to the next wad is too hard for the player. I'll add Ganymede just above doom2.wad. I haven't played 2002 ADO so I'll have to defer to other's opinions though I might play it tonight. Thanks again. Edit: @noisebloom Yep, I'll definitely be adding SIGIL tonight as well as TNT.

    A impossible upcoming megawad..

This thread is going nowhere. @Jeremixh if you're deadset on making a megawad, sweet, go for it. Personally, I'd say it's not a good idea for a novice mapper but if you really want to then go ahead. I'll play what you release but to be brutally honest I have exceptionally low expectations. I'd be stoked for you to prove me wrong.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

Does anyone agree with @GarrettChan's view that Doom 2 is harder than Thy Flesh? Interesting point. Map30s can have such a sudden spike in difficulty that it may prove difficult to normalize - we'll see what happens as it crops up and deal with them one at a time. It can be mentioned as a note on the WAD itself if the difficulty between map30 and the rest of the WAD is very dramatic.

    PrBoom+ name bikeshedding

I agree with ProBoom aka PrBoom to alleviate trademark concerns. @Bauul raise a good point. PrBoom+ ?

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

@Armaetus Can you (and any future posters) say where you'd place the WADs in relation to the existing list? I can place Fava and Ganymede but it makes it a lot easier if you include that with your suggestions.

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

@Nine Inch Heels Yeah, the reason I put everything on a sliding scale from easiest to hardest is because the difficulty is relative to the player. I'd consider HR hard however I played through with no saves so really had to grind. I've played No Chance and that'll definitely be at the far end of the spectrum. Rush will be in the middle, after AV. Sunlust I'd also put towards the far hard end. How would you place Dimensions, AA (I've only cooped it), Cryogenics etc?

    WAD Progression for Skill Improvement

@DuckReconMajor I'd put MM1 + MM2 between Plutonia and Scythe. I'll put HR after AV and Sunder after that. I haven't played enough Scythe 2, HR2 or DV to be able to confidently say where they'd sit in the list (though I have a good idea). I'll add these later on today. I'm not sure about STRAIN either, if anyone else can comment on that that'd be appreciated.

    A impossible upcoming megawad..

Don't make a megawad. Make a map first. Then a bunch more. Then think about doing something bigger. If you start with a megawad you'll have to throw out all of your old maps several times over as your skill and knowledge increases.

    Perception of Doom

I would definitely recommend Nihility for that. The lack of music works really well for putting you on edge. I also agree with @Woolie Wool, playing in 320x200 at 35fps adds hugely to the atmosphere. If you want to play GZDoom wads like that I'd recommend adding Vanilla Essence to the mix.

    Chernobyl [HBO Mini-series]

I just finished watching the last, out of five, episode of Cherobyl. If you haven't seen it, holy shit, it's so good. I highly, highly recommend it. It's contained within five 60 minute episodes (bit longer with credits) and follows what happened during (and after) the disaster at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986. I'm normally not one for dramatic shows but this really hit the spot. It's not overly long and or complicated which makes for easily digestible yet gripping viewing. The way the show treats the material - especially at the very end - really makes it for me. It's also now the highest rated show on imdb beating out Planet Earth 2 and Band of Brothers. So yeah, it's dope as fuck, def recommend watching it if you haven't.

Oh. Snap. This a very welcome surprise!

The DWIronman League dies to: SIGIL

I recorded a run all hyped up in May after playing through once. I fell into a tiny inescapable pit in map3 (I think) and have deleted it since. Sigh.

    An Idea for the Coders

You could do weapon and item randomizers easily through DECORATE too. For the textures (and presumably, sounds) it can be accomplished via zscript. You could take a look at the fireblu mod and play around with that. I haven't done anything with zscript but I imagine there's a way to randomize the textures and flats rather than replace with specific ones. I think the real feat would be in making it visually cohesive in some way. Rather than a totally random texture maybe any instance of STARTAN on the map is replaced with (CEMENT* or MARBLE* or PANEL*). That way it would have a consistent (albeit probably psycho) style through each map.

Is switch doom 2016 just as good as ps4 doom 2016?

I've got the PC version and Switch versions. The switch port is worth getting just to marvel at IMO. It plays well enough and it's cool to be able to carry Doom around with you wherever you are. I wouldn't ever play it over the PC version but if you've got some cash to spare and want a cool Switch game it's worth picking up.
