    I'm reading the first Doom novel at the moment and I can confirm it's a decent and definitely cheesy read. For me, it's not really a page turner but it's definitely cool to check out. I do like collecting stuff but I'm more of a digital hoard. I might need to butcher these books to get good scans but in the end it'll be worth it.
  4. SKILL PROGRESSION Concept I'm looking to make a generally agreed upon list of WADs for players to improve their skill. I've been doing this in my own head for a little while now while trying to improve and figured we could work together and create some sort of framework for progression for players at any skill level. I think each entry should be a reasonable increase in difficulty from the previous one, we don't need to try to rate all WADs due to tiny increments in perceived difficulty. I'll edit this post as people provide input (I've added just a few wads to get it started). How to Play The list assumes that you aren't save scumming. Save scumming involves quicksaving very often (especially during fights) allowing you to rely on RNG/luck to survive rather than actual skill. Saves can be useful when practicing a map if you intend to do a saveless run afterwards. If the mapset is roughly on par with your skill level then playing it saveless and blind 'can be a good way to improve nerves, reactions, on-the-fly strategy, 'reading' an area to anticipate what fights might happen, and so on.' (Thanks @rdwpa)  I recommend playing all maps from a pistol start - essentially all maps are balanced around pistol starts. Continuous play will make maps either too easy or too hard, depending on which state you finished the previous map in.     How often are you trying to explain Doom modding/mapping to outsiders that we need to replace the term entirely? Just call them entities for that one conversation you had and it's fine.

    I agree with the Doom novel, I'm reading through it currently after being on a big Lovecraft kick. I'm also wanting to digitize copies of these books and place them on archive.org. I've ordered all the books from the editing section on doomwiki (bar the japanese one) as well as The Lost Episodes of Doom book (fuck, I love that cover). I'm not sure what the best method is to actually digitize them, I understand archive.org has some pretty robust rigs for this purpose which I obviously have no access to. I'm going to talk to some friends who are still at Auckland Uni or have connections there to see if they can be any assistance. I fully agree. Assuming all the books turn up (shipping from the US to New Zealand) I'll be digitizing them one way or another. They need to be preserved and shared - whether or not the links will be able to be shared on Doomworld forums is another question.

    Pardon the thread Necro but I'd like clarification on this. Is this still the official DW stance? I've just got a copy of 'Tricks of the Doom Gurus' and I've got a physical copy of 'The Doom Construction Kit' coming in the mail. Since these books are OOP and I'm interested in preserving them am I able to post links to pdfs?

    I had a look at Series 1000 earlier today but unfortunately couldn't find links to the various gunshots. I had a look at other popular libraries from around that time and none of those matched. Also, God damn these sounds are expensive... I get that a library would be expensive but some sites want $5 USD for a single gunshot sounds.

    This is a cute 94 midi pack that replaces every E1 track with a different classical piece. They actually sound decent so the midis could be used for a map. It's definitely cool to see these early Doom mods.

    The pistol fire sound effect from Doom 64 / PSX didn't originate from either of those games. It was used in ELEMENTS.WAD in 1994 which is several years before either of the games were released.

    I've had the exact same thought as you @Euden! I'm in the process of getting everything sorted so I can make a 90s style wad with authentic tools. I've actually just written up a quick guide on how to get DMapEdit running and able to produce maps. The best bet in my experience is to use DOS 6.22 in a VM (VirtualBox) with maybe Win98 over the top for easier file transfer to the host machine. I'll send you a PM.

    Sorting Doom WADs by Difficulty (Charts are fun)

    That's an issue I ran into in my thread too. The same goes for wads with large and contained spikes in difficulty - wads with a handful of very tough maps but the rest are a (relative) breeze are the worst for this. My solution is to weigh it all and add notes to specific entires (i.e map24, 27 and 29 have large spikes in difficulty). I like that you've made this thread. Having such a broad and inclusive list was out of scope for my thread but it does need to be made IMO.

    Is there any way to change the scale of the pro PrBoom+ hud (new hud, not original doom status bar)? It's too small for me on 1600x900.
