I have to correct myself here, i had the box opened in pretty low light. The Box have the prints on the sides, but they are really dark.

  2. I think it was a rushed release in germany. Back then german resellers (like CDV or Pearl), who mostly operated per mail order processing just had a short amount of time to sell certain games before they landed  on the infamous index. Once a game was "indexed" it was more or less dead for the seller, due to the restrictions which came with the index.

I remember my copy of DN3D came without a proper handbook, because the final handbook wasn't ready at release. Certainly for the same reason they released the game as it was.

This was the one, which came with the game.

And this is the coupon for the final handbook:

Anyone else annoyed by this or is it just me not allowing any fun?

To be honest i am tired of all Doom 64 videos or topics, when anybody call the lasergun "unmaker", because it is not the unmaker. It works completely different than what was described in the doom bible, there are even some serious doubts that the guys at Midway even knew about the concept of the unmaker, or any of the other stuff described in the doom bible which never made it into the game.

Not related to the comments or conversation about QSS vs IW or anything in general, but...

HOLY CRAP GUYS THE LIMITEDRUNGAMES QUAKE BOX I ORDERED A LOOOONG TIME AGO FINALLY SHOWED UP!

I will never order anything from that outfit again, the price didn't feel right and the long delay with no explanation to shipping time extensions certainly left a bad taste in my mouth too...  The product is cute though!  I absolutely adore the steelbook case that the game software came in, reminds me of seeing the bargain-bin game my parents brought home after taking a sibling to an appointment - little did I realize how big an impact ol' Quake would have on me as a child.

My order arrived today. I have ordered quite some titles from LRG, and the reasons for the long delivery, as someone else here explained have reasons. Ordering from them is nothing for impatient people.

I ordered all three editions for the Switch, the standard edition is okay, as always. $30 for a simple physical release. The deluxe edition is a bit pricey, at $80. But i like those extras like the steelbook, the keychain, etc.

But the ultimate edition is really underwhelming. The box is really big, but does not look like the one in the promo. Only the upper side of the box have the print of that promo box, all other sides are plain black. The pin is really a pixelated mess, and the ring of shadows is a tiny bit of china junk. The shambler figure is okay, and i haven't had a deeper look at that rotating quad damage thing. I don't really know what it is why i feel like it isn't worth the $180, but the $130 Doom collectors edition gave me a far better feeling. Even though i had to physically destroy the game carts, and have to wait now for the patched replacements.

Hell, you can even download the entire /idgames archive in one go without any manual intervention.

Not only this, you can do that even in a script using a command line application like ftp.exe in Windows.

I didn’t know you were involved in the development of Absolution! Any fun tidbits from the development worth sharing? Since it was the first way I played D64, I’ve always been fascinated with it.

I think beside Kaiser there is nobody active on DW who was involved in the Absolution TC. You can try to ask Elbryan, who hosted the forums for the development, he isn't active here anymore, i think. But he have an Youtube-channel.

But he haven't uploaded anything in years.

In other words, Doom heralded so many important things, whereas Duke didn't herald anything of note at all.

Perhaps Dukes influence wasn't as big as Dooms, but one thing was started by DN3D, the comments. Back then it was copied by the other Build games like Shadow Warrior and Blood, but even today there are games where the figure you play give some random comments. This gave the heros in first person shooters a bit of personality, which even Half-Life didn't achieve, while it excelled in so many other fields.

  8. Unreal was announced as the "Quake Killer" when the first screenshots was released, i remember 3D Realms talked about Prey in the same manner. For the  younger guys here at DW, Prey was 3D Realms first "DNF", and Unreal was impressive graphics wise, but arrived in stores in times when it could be more of a "Quake II Killer". But that was all about the graphics, at the time when Quake hit the shelves, no game could compete in this field. At least DN3D gave quake a good fight, it was huge back then.

I loved both, DN3D for all the crazy stuff and Quake for the dark and gritty atmosphere.

I Love this shit. So they used the NXDoom port (Which was quite a capable port for DC) and just made Strain an illegal but standalone game.

Russians were endlessly creative in this and not only made illegal mods, but also wholly new games using illegal/custom source code:

    • Counter Strike for DC
    • They Hunger Trilogy for DC
    • Operation Trondheim: Special Forces - PC - Quake 3 Engine - Standalone RTCW mod by Sheppard - 2002.

    • Operation Trondheim 2: Red Alert - PC - Quake 3 Engine - Standalone RTCW mod by Sheppard - 2002.

    • Operation Trondheim 3: Iron Cross -  PC - Quake 3 Engine - Standalone RTCW mod by Sheppard - 2003.

    • Soldier Of Empire/Soldier Of The Empire - PC - 2004 - Quake 2 Evolved Engine (Quake2Evolved) (From Quake 2 Evolved)  - Soldat Imperii, Fragmaker, Russobit M, Games Factory Interactive - Visually has some Doom 3 visuals, stencil shadows, limited normal mapping, self shadows - Still requires only Pentium 2 400 and 32 MB VRAM. - Russobit-M published it.

    • Snake Pit - PC - 2004 - Cube Engine - Bilby Games Studio - Also known as Zmeinoe Gnezdo [Ru]

    • Castle On Eczema - PC - 2005 - Quake 2 Evolved Engine - Also known as Exeter Castle, Medieval FPS but with Evolved UI - Zamok na Ehkze in Russian, Game Factory Interactive, Fragmaker - Russobit-M published it.

    • Lendlease - PC - 2004 - Quake 2 Max Engine - (Quake2Max Engine) - Russobit-M published it.

    • Specnaz Antiterror - PC - 2004 - modified Quake 2 Engine (Stencil shadows)

    • Specnaz Antiterror: The Mission In The Balkans - PC - 2005 - modified Quake 2 Engine (Stencil shadows)

    • Specnaz Antiterror: Afghanistan - PC - 2005 - modified Quake 2 Engine (Stencil shadows and smoothing)

    • Specnaz 2

Behind many of those releases where a russian bootleg label called Fargus Mutlimedia. They often took mods from various modders and sold them on CDs. I own maybe a dozen of those RtCW stuff. They aren't exactly standalone mods, they contain complete copies of the game and the mod.

  10. It is fiction first, and science second. The science in SciFi is just as the mythology etc. in fantasy, it is just a vehicle to transport a story. Best scifi always cared about a good solid story and great characters first, and the science stuff second. The realism, or better call it believability could improve the story, and depending on what you're gonna tell your audience may be even essential.

Daikatana has coop? Does that mean that the companions are controlled by other players rather than the AI?

Yes. I played it with two other guys nearly 20 years ago, and we had a pretty good time blasting through it. Like in soloplay especially episode 2 and 3 are great.

What exactly are the differences between Boomer Shooters (Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, etc.) and the more modern shooters like Half-Life 1 and Halo: CE?

The earlier shooters had an arcade like design, with stage after stage, some boss fights and a lot of creative freedom. While more modern shooters like HL had a more story driven approach, which mad it necessary to streamline the overall design to more linear maps.

Not that the studios didn't tried to make map design non-linear later, but these attempts failed in  the market. One of these is Medal of Honor: Airborne. While it certainly had some modern bullshit, like weapon upgrades, it's overall design worked pretty well in my opinion.  Basically every mission takes place in a small town, with a handful of mission objectives. The player is a paratrooper, jumping out of an airplane at the beginning of each mission, and can land everywhere on the map. With this approach, it is up to the player to decide the  order in which he want to accomplish the objectives. but as i said, unfortunately it wasn't very successful, so EA  abandoned this approach after MoH: Vanguard.

Xp has support for full screen in dos. Windows 7 and it's predecessor Vista lost that.

Windows NT and all OSs based on NT does not contain DOS. Every DOS executable runs in the NTVDM (virtual dos machine), which was designed for running DOS business applications. If you want to play games, prepare for many problems, i.e. missing sound.
