    Cheese tactics!

Very difficult to answer because there is no short answer, I think. I would say that do not make any 'extremely stupid things'. If I try to describe it as short as possible, it is something like this: 1. Try to avoid using the most effective tactic, but use it if absolutely necessary, as you do not want to die/lose. So, use it only for a safespace in a panic/bad situation. 2. Use sub-optimal decision, while keeping all options open. And that 2. 'step' is very important and difficult to explain, but in short: mobility/dexterity/options are the king in any game and situation. When you have many options to pick from, it means you can adapt, and your opponent(monsters in this case) cannot corner you into any inescapeable situation. Do not force a situation, so that you only have one option available. Recognizing such situations/decision points is very important, but also difficult. Also, this paragraph does not apply for everthing. There are always exceptions to rules. In Doom, effective HP (=health/armor) is the most important factor on the available options (ammo being the 2nd), as in the end it is all about staying alive. If you are low on health, you either have to get more hp immediately OR you have to do some extremely safe dodging. This means, you do not have that many options to choose from, so there's almost nothing else to learn except to finetune the 'extremely slow, CoD stylish gameplay', described earlier. With high effective HP you have more freedom to do things. With experience you know what options are still available, and which options are the only options that can keep you alive through the whole situation(map, big fight, small fight), not just through an immediate threat. I personally like to look at effective HP versus damage in this way: as long as I cannot die one hit, I am safe. And again, this rule does not apply for every situation, but the question in the quote is in a way asking "How do you define freedom?", which means that the answer for it is quite self-destructive when describing with a set of rules. Just don't follow any rule like a fanatic, ever. Use your own head. Try something new. I do not know how to answer "how to try something new/how to be free", and I feel like this whole post is becoming more and more meaningless the more I think about the subject. Empty reply would do the same (=make you think). I was considering of deleting this whole reply, but I am gonna leave some kind of a puke of a thought process here.

    Cheese tactics!

I actually disagree. If one always plays the 'best tactic out there', he never learns to be better/faster/more safe/whatever. However, it is good to be aware of the best possible tactic and get good with it. I have noticed though, that the fastest way to learn is by playing 'worse', as there is more freedom to find some niche/cheesy tactics that are actually the best tactics/strategies in a very narrow range of situations. Though one way to look at your statement is simply "Use your head."

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

I know, and that's what I did. It is missing the .dll as there is no such file in Crispydoom 5.6, 5.7 nor 5.8.

Seems like it is missing something. zlib1.dll is missing -> it wont run.

Any info about this feature? Is it low priority? Was the request too confusing/made no sense?

I want to start speedrunning The Ultimate Doom

UV-Speed is: exit as fast as possible on ultra-violence UV-Fast is: Kill all monsters and get all the secrets with the -fast parameter. -fast parameter makes the monsters a lot faster.

I want to start speedrunning The Ultimate Doom

Good. Now try to locate Doom.wad or Doom2.wad in your steam folder, and copy it into your CrispyDoom or PrBoom+ folder.

I want to start speedrunning The Ultimate Doom

    1. Download crispydoom if you like the original MAPS. Download Prboom+/Glboom+ if you like original maps + custom gameplay. 2. Once you have downloaded either CrispyDoom or Prboom+/Glboom+, then you have to move Doom.wad or Doom2.wad to the main directory of your sourceport. For example C:\crispydoom\ *drop WAD here* 3. Now, make a shortcut out of your crispydoom.exe or prboom+/glboom+.exe 4. RIGHT CLICK on the shortcut. Click Properties. Target is something like: C:\Crispydoom\crispy-doom.exe 5. Now modify the Target to look something like this: C:\Crispydoom\crispy-doom.exe -iwad doom.wad -skill 4 -record mydemoname -nomusic Here the "-iwad doom.wad" uses Doom1 as the maingame (instead of Doom2, which has additional monsters + supershotgun). -skill 4 = ultraviolence. -record mydemo records a demo. -warp 2 2 = warps into E2M2. Warp 22 = warp into Map20 (no episodes present). You get Doom.wad or Doom2.wad by purchasing the game. Do not buy the BFG version, though.
  11. That is incorrect. Wallrunning at: Frame: 138 Thingrunning (no different from wallrunning) at: Frames: 62, 63, 170, 171

    TAS Practice Runs

How to distinguish the amount of players in a co-op run? That's something that I've been confused about.

    New category ideas

uv -fast with -turbo 144 is my favourite category now :) but I really dislike uv-fast with -turbo 132 !!! Joking aside, I think there are 3 turbo cateogries (that are taken somewhat serious): -turbo 10 (or such) for extremely slow speed, -turbo 50(?) for stroller and turbo255 for maximum speed. Not sure of the exact values as I haven't played them.
  14. Now have you tried to speedrun the map with -nomonsters parameter ":D" Then it's fun and addictive.... 29 seconds ore die trying!

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

Awesome stuff as always! Installed it as soon as I saw the update. Really appreciate the effort and all the fine-tuning. About this request: I think this kind of thing could just show the "last time USE key was pressed" into the AdvancedHUD. For example: K 5/10 I 0/38 S 0/3 T 3.97 (this would only refresh everytime the use key is pressed) However if someone presses the use key down for 10 frames in a row, it would only show the time from the 1st frame the use key was pressed down. Only non consecutive "use commands" could refresh the timer again.
  16. I'm using XDRE v2.06 or 2.09
  17. The trick is called "quick start". It accounts for the first 1-7 frames of the demo or so. It is slighly dependant on your computer and heavily dependant on the source port. Each source port has a different kind of quick start. The best quick start at the moment is in Crispy Doom with the in-game restart button. You can get it angled with an insane S50 start. I think an in-game restart button would make it even better for prboom+, too. It will, if you turn on the very first frame, though :-) Under Prboom+, the quick start looks SOMETHING like this: Frame 1: MF50 SL40 (MF50 = W/forward. SL40 = A/strafe left) Frame 2: MF50 SL40 TR38 (TR38 = turn 38 'tics' to the right) Frame 3: MF50 SL40 Frame 4: MF50 SL40 Frame 5: MF50 SL40 Frame 6: MF50 SL40 Frame 7: MF50 SL40 Frame 8: MF50 SL50 (the first frame where the game feels like it is not stuck in the melting screen anymore, but player can turn with the mouse, for example) In CrispyDoom it is something like this: Frame 1: MF50 TR31 Frame 2: MF50 TR7 Frame 3: MF50 SL40 Frame 4: MF50 SL40 Frame 5: MF50 SL40 Frame 6: MF50 SL40 Frame 7: MF50 SL40 Frame 8: MF50 SL50 (again the first frame where player gets the normal control back, similar to prboom+) And with in-game restart button in CrispyDoom it looks like this: Frame 1: MF50 SL40 TR38 Frame 2: MF50 SL50 Frame 3: MF50 SL40 Frame 4: MF50 SL40 Frame 5: MF50 SL40 Frame 6: MF50 SL50 Frame 7: MF50 SL50 Frame 8: MF50 SL50 (full control gained around here) And in DOSbox + original exe it looks something like this: Frame 1: MF50 TR31 Frame 2: MF50 Frame 3: MF50 Frame 4: MF50 Frame 5: MF50 Frame 6: MF50 Frame 7: MF50 SL40 TR7 Frame 8: MF50 SL50 (full control gained around here) And in original exe under DOS environment it looks something like this: Frame 1: MF50 SL40 TR38 Frame 2: MF50 SL40 Frame 3: MF50 SL40 Frame 4: MF50 SL40 Frame 5: MF50 SL40 Frame 6: MF50 SL40 Frame 7: MF50 SL40 Frame 8: MF50 SL50 (full control gained around here)

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

One tiny request regarding IDDT cheat code: it is very useful in speedrunning even though it is not allowed in a real attempt. So I use it when the run fails (iddt twice) to check where some missing enemies were. The problem: I have the IDDT cheat code enabled even after I have hit the in-game demo restart button. I think it should reset the cheat code back to normal state, so that the user doesn't have to remember to do it every time. It is not a big problem for sure, but a bit on the fuzzy side how legit demos are produced in this way. I personally don't give a damn about it, but I want to be fair/clear about it, though. Please, don't completely disable it though as it is useful in speedrunning. Thank you very much!

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

The demo timer widget shows the accumulated number of recorded in tics which is a bit confusing for newer players: For example, 10.34 is often confused 10.34 seconds, even though it is actually 10.97. I think the demo timer should show 10'34 or 10 (34), so people don't confuse it with centiseconds. Or make it a toggleable: as a default, it should show the time as centiseconds though, but maybe someone prefers tics.

[PB] E2M6 nomo (00:49) any suggestions?

The running was allright, only one tiny bump. However, when you do the void glide, you should use only one angle, an angle that works quite often. So go pratice the void glide with save/load a couple times, try to memorize the good angle somehow. For example, by looking at the textures in the wall when hugging the corner. Hitting the exit switch is about hitting the very left side of the exit switch, so try to aim there. If you can't hit it, it means you HAVE TO move a tiny bit, and try again to hit the very left side of the exit switch. One time, you will hit the exit switch without having to reposition yourself :-)

Possible void glide skip for Map31?

Don't worry, the void glide can be quite annoying at times... and there's the speed-up feature in Prboom+ :-)

    Nomonster speedrunning

Doom E2M1 nomo in 31.71. Notice that a time of 31.89 was mentioned as a notable 2019 demo, hence the wall of text included in the text file. I have never seen a run between 31.89 and 31.71, and I never fucking will. 31.71 baby. Till the day I fucking die. n2m13171.zip

Possible void glide skip for Map31?

Check my Map31 TAS from year 2014 :-) This means, it is slower route. This trick falls into the same category as the E2M6 void glide. The moment that was discovered is the moment every iwad map with such geometry was discovered.
  24. A demo from the past :-) Doom 2 UV-Speed in 20:30, back when 20:32 was the WR. After this came the 19:59 by Zero-Master. 30uv2030.zip

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

I think you have to learn how to do the quick start. Try moving your mouse before the meltin effect, reduce the amount of black screen (it's the additional wait time or such, if the black screen is too long). In-game restart button should 'fix' the black screen in _any_ case.
