What Are Your Guilty Pleasure Songs?

    Porting Disasters Thread

I won't sit here and try to claim that Jesper Kyd's work on games like Sub-Terrania and Red Zone wasn't banging, just to give an example, but a lot of Western games fell back on the godawful GEMS sound driver which only a few developers knew how to get anything out of, such as Jean Baudlot (RIP) and Raphael Gesqua's work on Flashback.

    Porting Disasters Thread

The Mega Drive port of Rock'n'Roll Racing. Playable, yes, but the music was absolutely BUTCHERED in the porting process and is a prime example of just how incompetent Western developers could be when it came to programming the YM2612. In a game whose entire selling point is the goddamn soundtrack. Place it alongside something like Thunder Force IV which demonstrated that the MD could easily handle a metal soundtrack and it just comes off as insulting. I quickly discovered WHY it only cost me £3.

    What Was Your Last Purchase?

Also protip: if you live in Europe, NEVER order a Dreamcast game online. Not unless you want to find bits of the jewel case lying in the bottom of the envelope.

Have you ever changed your opinion on a game?

Burnout 3: Takedown. Liked it at the time, now there are just too many things that absolutely infuriate me. The Aftertouch camera actively avoids showing you where the other racers are, and even when it doesn't you end up shooting vertically into the air during a crash so you can't make use of it anyway. Preview/burning laps have bullshit-anaemic time limits where even a perfect run only nets you silver. Crash Mode was completely ruined with the addition of multiplier tokens, meaning you end up aiming for those instead of the crash junction. Rubberbanding is completely one-sided. THEY GIMPED THE GODDAMN HOTROD!! On reflection, Point of Impact really was the only good one (that game's Crash Mode still gets busted out a parties in my gaff), although I enjoyed Traffic Attack from Revenge.
  7. Not to mention that horrendous border on the NES and SNES games.

What fictional dystopia would you want to live in?

Starship Troopers isn't really a dystopia IMO - despite Verhoeven's best efforts, it comes off more like a liberalist utopia with a fascist coat of paint. Yes, the Terran Federation is a globalist one-world government, but they didn't have the authority to stop the Mormon separatists from setting up shop on a hostile world. All they could do was strongly advise against it. They do control the media, but when you rewatch the film you can see that it is actually completely transparent in its reporting (just look at the corpses). In fact the only two things it censored were the cow getting shredded by the Arachnid and the Brainbug getting a probe shoved up its arse. Service is entirely voluntary and open to absolutely anyone, but it is actively discouraged, which is why it's so brutal. You can quit at any time during your 2 years, but you only ever get one shot at Citizenship. Civilians otherwise have full rights, even so far as to openly criticise the government (and Johnny Rico's parents are effing LOADED), they just don't get the opportunity to do anything about it. Suffrage has to be earned, the reasoning being that when you earn something, you're more likely to care about it. As Raszcak said, "that which is given has no value". As for my choice, I really want to say Ankh-Morpork. Dunno if it counts as a full-on dystopia, but it definitely is a shitehouse.

    Twitch has been hacked!

Password changed, not that I use Twitch much since TB passed away. Interesting how the leaks made reference to a potential Steam competitor. Fantastic, ANOTHER bloody PC client, only this time you run the risk of losing access to all of your purchases if you say something too "gamer". No thanks.

    PS3 question

Your download list is guaranteed post-shutdown. For now, at least...

    Corn on pizza

Not something I would order, but voting yes purely on principle because it's not pineapple.

How do you like your Burgers?

Bacon, egg, mushrooms and onions. NO CHEESE.
  13. Aye, right enough, considering the amount of Square stuff they did manage to get.
  14. So the sensible money won out in the end. Glad to hear that fans got what they were hoping for. Personally I would have loved to have seen Sakurai show up in the game himself - make him like Mokujin from Tekken and just give him everyone else's moves. And that Slayer costume is adorable <3

Obscure Game Consoles, and rip-off consoles discussion thread.

I'm old enough to remember the Bad Influence episode mentioned in this video. I also remember the TV Boy from a magazine ad. That said the only console I have that would qualify as a knockoff is the CyberGadget RetroFreak. It's basically a Retron5 only not as shit.
