  2. No, this isn't a blog about how I landed a job in a chocolate factory. This is about my victory over Doom E1 in Chocolate Doom (UV Mode).

E1M1 - Easy shit. Hit the switch, grab blue armor, kill shit, get secret shotgun, exit.

E1M2 - Got all the secrets without IDCLIP for the first time, but only because I did IDBEHOLDA (Allmap). First Soulsphere and Chainsaw.

E1M3 - I knew the route to the secret level like the back of my hand. Proceed to E1M9.

E1M9 - Found some more shit during this run.

E1M4 - This is where the game started getting harder. I've had to pistol start this level because I didn't want to bother going all the way back to E1M3 then E1M9 just because I forgot to save.

E1M5 - Ha Ha finally remembered to save!

E1M6 - I wonder why I never remember these mazes. Another pistol start.

E1M7 - I must have tried at least ten times, but during these attempts I found out that I have a talent with the Rocket Launcher.

E1M8 - Specters ruined my battle against the Bruiser Brothers (Two Barons of Hell, according to the Doom Bible), but after three attempts, this was completed.

Next stop, The Shores of Hell!

Try not loading a mouse driver by default with your autoxec/config.sys and then we're talking :-p

For me mouse control was optional and a curiosity, at best, because I didn't think of the WASD configuration in time, and arrows + mouse without novert = shit :-p

That's the default controls for Boom.

Also, there's really no need for "Ninja ALT skillz" for circle strafing because by default you can strafe using "," and ".", but it's very awkward. If anything, the turning and strafing should be swapped (Left/Right arrows to Strafe and </> to turn, and Autorun enabled and you have a decent control)

But because I'm so used to it, I set up WASD for movement and strafing, enabled the mouse, disabled vertical movement, constantly hold Shift to run, either LMB or CTRL to fire and either Space or RMB to open doors and hit switches.

I would set it up like this on Skulltag, but I know some WADs require Altfire, Invuse, and jumping in ZDoom/ST, so I keep my setup just the way I like it.

  3. I figured I'd keep you Doomers updated to my project every Sunday. In the last few days, this project has undergone some changes, but is still not ready for release.

    Changes:
    The project will require TNT.WAD
    Map32 moved to Map07
    Map08 finished
    Map09 in progress
Map04 and Map05 are completely going to change because they're shit looking back.
Some textures may change between maps just to abuse TNT's textures.

Development is at a snail pace because of other priorities (or because I have a life outside of editing) and because I'm not a speedmapper.

    Screens of MAP04:

Thanks for the advice, Khorus. I'm working more on the map today. But the reason I put this in blogs is because I wanted an excuse to fill my Doomworld blog.

Every forum user has a blog that's updated when he makes a thread in this section, so that's the technology I'm using on this forum.

  5. This isn't a 'looking for advice' blog or a 'feel sorry for me' blog. This is a 'ugh I'm frustrated and I need to vent to random internet strangers my problems' blog.

A while ago there was a girl I'd met who was very odd. She didn't quite work the same way other people did. her thoughts were ... jumbled ... but not impaired at all. But she could keep her priorities straight and she was very intelligent, despite being very difficult to interact with. She liked me, but I had no interest in her, I was mainly scared away by her crazy randomness and odd personality. I dated her for about a week, but I ended it quickly and afterwards I wouldn't even give her the time of day for a year. Now I've spent more time to understand who she is and what kind of person she is, and I've come to find her very attractive and I'm very much in love. I've learned to not be afraid of her eccentricity and admire it because she's so damn different. problem being that a friend of mine insists she's with someone else and is now just toying with my head.

what's even worse is that she now knows how I feel about her and remains entirely ambiguous as to her feelings about it. I can't tell if she's just trying to avoid hurting my feelings, or if it merely has to do with her airheadedness. This is driving me nuts.

it's entirely my fault for not realizing what i had and not taking the time to understand her. i brought this upon myself, but it certainly isn't helping me get over the major depression I've had since I quit smoking. If anything this has furthered my self-loathing to a new level. I might just have to join TimeOfDeath in his self-imposed isolation :P

The depression is pretty terrible right now, and I think that simply venting helps to alleviate some of this. Then again, what's the worst that could happen? I'm emotionally destroyed? I can live with that.

EDIT: on the bright side, its times when I'm bent up about women that I get the most work on my mods done. I should focus this frustration on ironing out more bugs.

  6. Today I got a chain letter on my school e-mail. I wish I could ignore chain letters in my e-mail but I just feel the need to point out how stupid they really are.

    1) "daddy it hurts"
A poem written in the perspective of an abused three-year-old. The same shit I got today. It hasn't emotionally affected me, so apparently I'm heartless and need to be abused. This is stupid for these reasons:

*I have not been abused as a child nor do I know any child who's being abused so it's not in my place to speak up against child abuse.

*People who abuse children are heartless animals who won't listen to reason.

    *Child abuse is already illegal.

    2) "send this to 25 people and you will be kissed by your crush. if you don't you will die"

Apparently e-mail has this magical property that if you send a certain letter to XX people you'll be kissed by someone you have a crush on, and if you neglect to send the e-mails to others, you'll die in some mysterious way.

    3) "send this to XX people or the ghost of this dead girl or some shit will kill you"

Commonly found on YouTube and other sites you can post comments on. Same as 2.

  8. Sometimes I feel as though I'm on a pointless journey here. I've been searching for years for a decent gamepad to use on my PC, and with every single option I've tried so far I've been met with nothing but annoyances. Is it really so much to ask for a good wireless controller that doesn't feel like it's made of cheap plastic and have a fully functioning d-pad and analog sticks?

So here's what I've tried so far:

    • Built for PC gamepads. I've tried several gamepads made specifically for PC over the years, and all of them have suffered from at least one crippling issue. The most common being a badly constructed d-pad that doesn't function properly (you wanna go right, huh? well, good luck doing that without also going diagonally too!) If the d-pad is tolerable, it's the analog sticks that are a problem. For the love of god, who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to build round analog sticks into a SQUARE hole? Not to mention that in comparison with most first party console controllers, PC gamepads almost always feel like they're made of cheap plastic.

    • Playstation 2 to USB Adapters. Theoretically a fantastic idea. Sony's Playstation controllers are probably the most well designed and functional controllers I've ever used. Unfortunately, I've tried a couple of different PS2-USB adapters and both of them were anything but useful. Both of the adapters I picked up had problems with the controller ports, where one of them would intermittently work, or if you decided you wanted to use two controllers at the same time one of the controller ports would decide to crap out on you, so you'd only be able to use one controller at a time.

    • XBOX 360 Controller. This is what EVERYONE recommends I do. I've tried it, and I've gotta tell you it's great aside from one crippling flaw. The XBOX 360 controller has THE WORST d-pad ever to grace a 1st party game controller. What the fuck were they thinking? Sometimes I feel as though the d-pad in that controller has a mechanism inside of it that triggers random directions whenever you touch it, just to fuck with you. Now, there's several guides on the interwebs about how you can remedy this issue, but I don't think I want to risk wasting $50 tearing apart a controller and using some sandpaper on a d-pad only to end up breaking it in the process.

    • Playstation 3 Dualshock Drivers. This is my most recent (and most successful endeavor). Being that Sony sucks all kind of ass with their proprietary hardware that only works with other Sony hardware, they couldn't be bothered to write a simple driver to use the Playstation 3 Dualshock controller in Windows. So of course that means that there's some shoddily developed drivers floating around the internet developed by a third party. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get them to work, especially since I'm running Windows 7 x64, which doesn't play too nicely with unsigned drivers. I did eventually manage to get my PS3 controllers to work, but of course there's a couple of really annoying downsides. First and foremost, I couldn't get bluetooth connection to work so I had to go out and buy a 15-foot long USB male A to male mini-B cable. Beyond that, when I'm done using the controller and decide to unplug it, it'll turn my PS3 on and sync with that, which means that I'd either have to unplug my PS3 when I'm using the controller on my PC or get up and turn the damn thing off constantly.
So yeah, I've tried just about every option available to me (that I'm aware of). If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, it'd be greatly appreciated.

For one I couldn't care less about analog sticks in square holes as long as they're functional. Maybe if the hole was rotated by 45 degrees then it'd be good design, but I don't give a fuck about analog sticks either because A) I mostly use gamepads for emulation, B) if I wanted to use a gamepad in ZDoom I wouldn't bother with the analog sticks and try to play it like Saturn Quake. Logitech Dual Action controller serves me well. As with the XBox controller: just use the XBox 1 controller (it is possible to make a USB plug for it) with the XBCD driver.

The reason people use gamepads over arcade sticks is:
      A) They're comfortable with gamepads after 20 years of playing Mario with a controller you can hold in your hands
      B) They take up a lot less space than an arcade stick (compare having a Gauntlet party with four arcade sticks as opposed to four gamepads).
      C) They're cheaper.

Durability isn't everything in gaming peripherals. Just go with experience.

These things are less clunky and more diverse:
Wanna play SF with a Genesis 6-button pad? You're good!
Wanna play Doom with a Genesis 6-button pad? Just like Wolf!
      Heretic? Why the hell not?

Wanna play Street Fighter with an SNES pad? Good luck pulling off a strong Dragon Punch/Fireball.

  11. My dad picked up a bolt-action 12 gauge for $25, it's a little rough, but I am gonna fixed it up to gain some skills in practical gunsmithing. It's a J.C. Higgins, sold by Sears and Roebuck anywhere from 1940-something to the mid-1950s. Pretty neat gun.

The end of the barrel was cut off crudely (it's 21 inches though, 18 is the min. length) so I have to fix that by grinding it relatively straight, filing it then giving it a good buffing. The jerk that did it (the guy my dad bought it off of) got metal shavings in the barrel and action, so I need to give it a really good cleaning and oiling (which I was gonna do anyway, but that makes it more urgent). I am going to silver solder a bead so it has a front sight bead again. I am going to install a new recoil pad because that one is red, cracked and from the 1950s. So yeah, it'll be a fun experience, for sure, but once I am done, I'll end up with a solid work-horse.

Apperently, I was far from alone in YouTube-Land to celebrate New Year's Day with elevator rides, but I was the earliest, at 12:03am.

Getting away from my crazy neighborhood for the night (I like to sleep after 2am), I spoiled myself with a night at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, about 1.5 miles from "Crazy Town".
