    Overpowered Weapons Mod(s)

What are some good overpowered weapons mods? I saw a pretty cool looking one titled "Russian Overkill" on youtube, but the author never released it because he borrowed resources (though he later released two or three of the individual weapons on realm667 I think).
  2. As you may or may not know, Vanilla Doom has some tricks and glitches that can be used to add some pretty cool effects to maps. I thought that I'd make a thread that explained a few, and I ask people to add more to the list. Keep in mind that many of these tricks won't work in OpenGL, and will be reported as errors by wad editors (because after all, they do use glitches). I know that there's ways to make windows that block bullets, sliding and swinging doors, invisible platforms, 3D lifts, reverse stair building, solid looking 3D bridges that can be walked over and under (using dummy sectors and quick raising lifts). There's also the sky paradox which can be used to make horizons that appear to extend infinitely and some fake room above room (or window above window, I should say). I don't understand how to do any of those tricks so I won't try to explain them. So please, feel free to add to this list. The things you add don't have to be glitches that do amazing things like room over room effects, they can just be fun and creative things to do in vanilla mapping in general. It'd also be cool if someone made an example map to demonstrate all of these. --- Edit: Quite a few example wads can be found here. One there that hasn't been mentioned yet is the ceiling fan. -- Instant Death Trap: This is the simplest one. Teleport the player into a voodoo doll (a second player 1 start). Instant telefrag. Instant Raising Lift: Set a linedef to perform action number 36. Set the target sector to be below the starting point. It will cause the lift to raise instantly. Harmless Pain Elementals: In vanilla Doom, there's a limit to 21 lost souls (for the Pain Elemental). If you trap that many in a room, it will make them harmless. There's a number of things that you could accomplish by doing this. One is to have a bunch of them floating around harmlessly, and then have a crusher kill the lost souls so that they begin attacking. Pretty sure that this was done in some old megawad. Monsters hidden in floor: Just sink a pit into the ground and leave its sides untextured. Make sure that you raise the floor to release the monster, because if the player falls into the pit it will look terrible, and the player will be trapped. Force Field: Create an animated middle texture that looks like a force field. Place it in a map, and put a small damaging sector around it. Using dummy sectors you can make the force field "deactivate" but again I don't know how to do this so someone else will have to explain it. Deep Water: NOTICE: see Spleen's post later down the page for a better way to do this. My method will work, but only on very small areas, in certain situations and from certain angles. 1. Create a sector sunken into the floor, and apply textures to the sides. 2. Add a small sector inside this one as close to the sides of the larger sector as possible. 3. Sink the inside texture to the depth that you want the water to be at (the "water" has to be shallow, the player cannot completely submerge itself or he will be able to see HOM). Give this sector some sort of liquid flat. 4. Make sure that the inside of the pit is untextured, and it should work. This works the same way as the pit above. There's a way to do this to where you can travel under the water without experiencing HOM, but I don't know how to do that. Self Destruct Button: Take a look at Doom 2 map 30. When the Icon of Sin is killed, the textures that make up the boss face are covered in explosions. Replace these textures with something else, and build a room or something that's going to explode using them. Replace the Icon of Sin's sounds with something else that gives the effect that you want. Now, create a switch that activates a crusher to crush the Icon of Sin, or replace the Icon of Sin's sprites with something that looks like a reactor so that you can shoot at it, place it behind a wall, or whatever. Be creative. When the Icon of Sin dies, you'll see explosions appear everyone, its a great effect when used properly. Large Flats/Textures: Large flats and texture can be made by combining smaller ones, take another look at map 30 again and you'll see a good example. "Transferred" Lighting: Create sector and make it brighter that the surrounding ones. Move the floor down as little as possible, and leave the sides untextured. The lighting will now appear on the ceiling but not on the floor. You can do the reverse if you wan the lights to appear on the floor instead. Works best in small areas. If you want to do it for a larger area, you can use self referencing sectors (see Spleen's post further down the page). Some General Tips: You obviously can't have to much sector based detail in vanilla, so new textures and middle textures can go a long way. Stacking middle textures can create the illusion of a solid structure. Take a look at Suspended in Dusk and other, similar vanilla wads. A lot of them use the tricks described here.

    Putting this Palette in Doom

I've been trying to get this palette into a wad using DeepSea but I keep getting the "PLAYPAL.bmp is not a 256 color image" error. I also want to generate a colormap using the program from the original Doom utilities source, but I have no idea how to compile them. Is there a download out there that I can just run in a DOS emulator?

    Putting this Palette in Doom

Thanks, didn't know that SLADE had that feature Forgot to link to the palette. I'll see if it works in SLADE

    Any Doom-related dreams?

When I first started playing Doom I had a dream that I was in this place with giant hills of dirt and a dark, overcast sky. There was a huge complex of trenches and tunnels in the area and a bunch of soldiers. I was there with the soldiers trying to fight off a demon invasion, the only thing I remember is shooting a shotgun at a pinky that hopped into one of the trenches.

Didn't we just have a Shooting?

Shiites and Sunnis are both Muslim. Sikhs aren't even close (not that it would be any better if he'd attacked Muslims). Since he was a white supremacist I'm guessing he just wanted a place where some non-whites would group together. A Sikh temple fit the bill... I can't tell if you're joking or not. Sikhs have been immigrating to America for at least 100 years IIRC. Also Sikhs come from India and probably wouldn't have experienced the same kind of attacks that Muslims experienced even if they had once called India their home.

No facebook? You're a mass murderer

The words of a true sociopath. I can sort of see the correlation but if employers actually take having or not having a Facebook into account when hiring then that's just sad. If you have one, then you might post something that will be taken out of context years from now and affect your employment even though it has nothing to do with your work performance. If you don't, then apparently you're an antisocial psycho now. Oh, should I be posting this online?

    honestly, honesty?

I had to complete similar questionnaires to apply to places like Wal-Mart and McDonalds online, seriously. It was absolutely pointless. I never got anything weird about animals in pain but most of them were (or appeared to be) completely irrelevant to the mind-numbingly easy job I was applying for.

    Return of the Triad!

I guess what I meant to say was annoying not cheesy. The voices in the original Duke Nukem were okay but from what I heard in the trailer (which admittedly isn't much) I'm not a big fan of the voice acting. I had to disable the voices in Serious Sam and I don't want every game developer to start thinking classic FPS=Duke Nukem voice :P

Other alternative names for the Demon?

When I first started playing I thought that they were called hellhounds as well. For some reason I remember them being called that in game.

    Return of the Triad!

One thing wrong: what's with the player's Duke Nukem-esque sayings? Doesn't fit with the original and seems sort of cheesy to me.

    Return of the Triad!

I am speechless. I simply can't believe that something this awesome is being made again.
  15. I could have sworn that there was a thread in Wads and Mods specifically for posts about not being able to find some old level but I can't find it now. Anyways, I'm looking for a level that was either part of the Demon Gate:666 shovelware CD or the Master Levels (I'm hoping it's the latter so that there's a chance someone will know what the hell I'm talking about lol). It was a DM map (or a map with no monsters) that took place on the moon. I remember there definitely being a vending machine next to a lift and there might have been an ad that read "Drink Caco-Cola". The lift led up to a computer area. There was an "airlock" and some radiation suits. The floors in the outdoor area caused damage. The sky texture had been replaced with stars.

    Bloodletting

The Steam version has them. Look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common or C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common (depending on your OS).

    Bloodletting

Yes, it's possible but it would be copyright infringement. I don't think that it'd be a big deal if it was just a few textures but since the entire mod is gothic themed it'd be easier to mod Heretic or Hexen instead of Doom. Do you have a copy of either game's iwad?

    Wrack

I really have no idea how you could misinterpret the text on the preorder page... it does say that "Wrack is ON SALE" but that's right after the list that tells you exactly what you're getting so I don't think anyone's convinced that the full game is on sale.

    [Solved] Virtual Floppy Drive Help

Yay! I tried some other programs. The compression method/format/whatever is exclusive to WinImage apparently, so I was able to get the files out using WinImage. Problem solved, thanks Bucket.
  20. I have some old files stored in self-extracting archives that will only go to a floppy disk. Since I don't have a floppy drive I created a 2.88 MB .IMG file using MagicISO and mounted it using Virtual Floppy Drive. So, yay, I have a floppy drive now. The "disk" is formatted as FAT. However, when I run the programs I get the message "The current image format is not supported by the disk drive". It took me an entire day to get this thing to work on my system and now I'm stumped. I'm guessing that I need to format the image but I don't know which filesystem to use or how to go about formatting it. Is there some other way to obtain these files? I have a feeling that there's an easy, obvious way that I'm missing lol.

    [Solved] Virtual Floppy Drive Help

Ooooh, I can see the files and info using 7-Zip but it can't extract them because the "compression method isn't supported". Good to know that they're still there. at least. I don't need it to be bootable or anything, I just want the files. I only bothered with the virtual floppy thing because I thought running the self-extracting .exe was the only way to get the files out.

Are you a Doom player, mapper or programmer?

All three, though I'm not particularly good at mapping.
  23. Cutscenes. Ironically they pretty much kill the sense of immersion for me, unless they're the interactive kind. I don't like losing control of the player character. I also hate it when the player doesn't have freedom to do things, like kill NPCs. I don't care if 10,000 guards run out and kill me right afterwards, I'd just like a reaction out of the NPC instead of having them be bulletproof and oblivious. Lack of freedom in general really irks me, and it should be easy to fix with modern game engines but no one really seems to care about it.

    Has anyone done this?

The first level of Doom 3 was interesting for me. Of course by the time that I played it I understood that game map sizes were limited, but I kept getting curious and using the noclip cheat to fly through windows and stuff to the areas I inexplicably wasn't allowed to enter. I also cheated and gave my self weapons to see what would happen if I killed the marines. They dissolved just like the demons. O_o Unfortunately I didn't play a lot of video games before I was 13 so I don't have a lot of older memories. I do however remember Episode One of Doom being particularly good at convincing me that there was whole worlds beyond the edge of the map... I'm almost upset that I know all of the secrets now.
