  1. I just won a title bout dominating all four rounds. It was a rematch against a much more muscular boxer (who actually competed for Golden Gloves before) that I fought to a draw before. His muscles were useless against me!

  2. This should come as a shock to nobody, but I have decided to become a Master Gunsmith. I have sent for an info packet to a gunsmithing school in Pennsylvania. Pretty sweet deal. In sixteen months, I'd be a certified Master Gunsmith, capable of operating my own shop and teaching apprentices. I'll be learning the basics of firearm operation, to the most esoteric of operations. By the end, I will literally be able to start with nothing but metal and wood and with the aid of some machines, create an entire firearm from scratch.

Yeah, it's a pretty odd career choice, but it's what I really, really want to do with my life. Fuck working for some corporate asshole, I can be my own boss.

After I am done with that, I plan on attending a two year college and getting a degree in small business management, so I can better learn how to properly run a business, should I start one.

  7. I'll be visiting New York City in a little over a week from now. Anyone have any tips for fun things to see or do?

No need to point out the obvious things; I've got plenty of information/guide books and am staying with a friend who knows the city well and has quite an itinerary already drafted out. I'm just thinking of little things like a cool cafe near such-and-such, or little shops full of tech/gadgets/game-related stuff, or some other such "unknown" places that fall under the normal tourist radar.

I've lived a little under 100 miles away in PA and I think I've been there just 4 times.

  9. The dream of every -well- SOME Doomers is to set up a decent oldskool system, right? Well, mine practically came true :-)

Today I received an old Pentium 133 with Windows 98 that had been catching dust in some office for the last 2 years (but was actively used until recently).

Anyway, the specs are something like:

    Pentium-S 133 MHz
    S3 Virge PCI graphics
    Mixed 4 ISA + 4 PCI slots!
Seagate 1.7 GB HD + a smaller 330 MB HD (took out)
Battered (2x? 4x?) SOny CDROM, scrapped and plugged a TEAC 40x.
    16 MB 72-pin DIMM RAM + 1 SDRAM socket!
A PCI Microtek Base-T 10 Mbps network adapter -> junked
An ISA ESS Audioforce -> junked

I plugged in a a 64 MB SDRAM DIMM scraped from a dead Pentium 2, and voila', a booming 80 MB of RAM! I could try Windows XP on it, but the CPU and lack of CD Boot make that hard...so I went first with DOS 6.2 then Windows 98, with DOS acting as a "carrying string". Suprisingly, some crappy backup floppies I had (DD floppies "upgraded" to HD and then diskcopied from the original) worked perfectly 10 years after they were made!

I then plugged in an ISA SB16 PnP...and it just worked!

Vanilla Doom plays like a charm, the FM sound was a blast to the past (however, when using the MIDI layer with Doom 95 it sounded shite)

And the obvious question...does it play ZDoom? Surprisingly, YES (in software mode, ofc, at least 640 * 480 played smoothly), but the OPL3 MIDI sounds crap because it uses MIDI mapper instead of direct hardware access, and no way I'm going to emulate an OPL3 on a Pentium 133 when there's the real thing in the box ;-)

Just wanted to share this thing with you, fellow Doomers :-)

I ran into this tonight at the grocery store. I really don't understand why linux isn't used for applications like this. The inkjet cartridge refilling machines at Walgreens use Windows as well.

  11. Recently this month, I just completed my two year course and will be picking up my degree in Information Technology later this month.

I didn't decide to walk on stage and do all this other stupid crap just to get a piece of paper. It was actually worth skipping that as I had more time to focus on other things like work and sleep.. and more work.

To be honest, I never really wanted to study IT. In fact, I hate that career. Too bad the school tricked me into signing up for the course though, as I really wanted to study in Computer Science but the school dropped the course and switched me over to IT just right as I signed up... heh.

Despite of that, I did gain some experience out of it.. like you will always receive angry phone calls from people who don't know how to turn on a monitor. Maintaining a network sounds a lot of fun too, especially when it goes down and you got 50 or so people bitching day and night about it.

I am not even going to bother thinking about applying for IT jobs that thousands of other people with 4-year degrees are applying for...
I really hate this competitive bs..

  14. Just ordered a new laptop from Dell to replace my Acer Aspire and desktop PC. I'll hopefully have it in a week or two.

    Specs as follows:

    Core Duo 7100
    2GB DDR2 RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS
    250GB SATA HDD
    Slotloading DVD Writer
    Usual Wireless/Ethernet networking
    Usual Bundled shitware with Vista

I also ordered the 9 cell battery, rather than the 6 cell to give me more travel time (my acer battery only lasts 40 minutes). I had the option to switch to a 64GB solidstate drive, but the cost was well over my budget, despite the benefits of having a non mechanical drive.

The reviews I've read have all been rather positive, most expressing surprise over the performance of an ultra portable laptop. The Toshiba R100's we have at work are complete rubbish compared to this puppy.

I'm going to remove Vista and install XP when I get it. I did find out after I ordered that there are no XP drivers for the Nvidia chip, only Vista drivers. Apparently Nvidia don't add the necessary entries to their INF file for their mobile gfx chips - effectively forcing you to use the vendors drivers (which are rarely updated and in this case don't work with XP), so I have to load in a thirdparty inf file. A slight annoyance, but it does answer the question why I couldn't switch to XP like their other offerings.

  15. ...or not.

Anyway, I woke up around 1am this morning. I was vaguely aware that the side of my head was stinging - I confirmed this by sticking my finger where it hurt and was promptly became wide awake. Rather disconcerted, I got up and had a look in the mirror:

I have not idea how I managed to cut/scrape myself like that while asleep, but I guess either I slept walked/fell out of bed or there was something sharp on my pillow or some shit.

The other oddity was that there was no blood what so ever - though that explains why it stung so much.

  16. It's taken me three months to actually do something with this domain I bought three or so months ago.

My intention is to index flash games that are playable on the Nintendo Wii (omg fanboi).Yesterday I setup a mysql DB and created a few basic PHP scripts that run the majority of the website - it's the first time I've ever worked with PHP and MySQL, so Im pretty proud of what I have achieved. I want to add a rating system next, but Im not sure whether it's worth the hassle.

The design of the site is thanks to Open Source Web Design - straight forward xhtml+css. I do have to make some changes to the Title and header links because it isn't terribly clear when viewing it on the Wii (even with the zoom function) - something along the lines of wiitube.com.

  17. I just heard that there was a book coming out based on Command and Conquer. I however, am not really looking forward to it's release. Why? Because it's written by "Keith R. A. DeCandido". I can't say I'm a big fan of his work. I've found a lot of the stuff he writes kind of cheesey. He wrote the book Resident Evil "Apocolyspe" which was even worse then the movie. He had tried to add some stuff to the already horrible plot that seemed like something out of Scary Movie

    Examples:
    - There was one part in the book where a female Umbrella soldier gets bit in the neck by a zombie. She puts her hand on the wound, pulls it away, looks at the blood for a couple of seconds, and then screams "Fuck!" before sticking the barrel of her baretta in her mouth and pulling the trigger.

    - I just found this kind of disturbing. Keith went into deep detail as to how every single kid in the Racoon City school were killed and eaten by zombies. Just looking at the description gave me the feeling that Keith had a haunting childhood

    - Remember the part where the extremely stereotypical black guy walked into the gunshop and all of those police officers aimed their guns at him? The author added some rather lengthy and pointless dialouge. As if that wasn't bad enough, ALL of the police officers and the black guy were using cheesey gangster slang. Also, instead of the black guy saying "Nigga please, my shit is custom!", the police officer said that.

Anywho, the twist in this thread is that *YOU get to decide how I spend it!

    The choices are:

    a) Drunken' Guitar hero. Always a blast, cost almost nothing but I may end up doing it alone on account of some of my so-called 'friends' thinking Guitar hero is lame :(

    b) Mexican themed restaurant I've wanted to take a look at, but haven't really had a reason to. looks decent. Can by Budweisers (I'm Australian) but will probably cost a bit. but a little lass sad then option A

  19. On January 8th, 2002 the president to much fanfare signed the No Child Left Behind Act, however careful inspection of the law reveals much more about the state of opinion on education than anything else. The law stresses accountability and places a great amount of weight on standardized testing. The two core elements of the NCLB that most of the bill is centered around have been proven, time and again to be completely ineffective at measuring the value and worth of student intelligence.

Accountability boils down to the “whose fault is it” mentality that the nation has fallen into. Rather than digging deep and realizing the root causes of our failures in the education system, accountability and the NCLB act try to find fault with teachers, students, school districts and anything else other than the real problems. The real problems facing education are the lack of parental involvement, which can be heavily attributed to the increased workloads of parents trying harder to meet the fiscal needs and lacking time to help their children. Accountability not only fails to pinpoint the problems, but it fails to work in implementation. NCLB gives states the power to give teachers bonuses for higher test performances in their classes, and there are so many flaws in this it’s staggering. Teaching bonuses don’t factor in if a teacher is given rowdier students than another, or if the teacher is teaching alternative methods to testing, like group learning. Accountability reeks of blame, and a self serving society who are always looking to pass the buck.

Standardized testing measures only “academic” performance in the areas of reading, language and math, and is not proven to even be a reflection of student capabilities in these areas. Standardized testing fails to measure the level of creativity or problem solving a student may be capable. This is important because the categories of “gifted” students by the United States Office of Education include not only intellectual and academic “giftedness” as only standardized testing accounts for, but the U.S.O.E. also has categories for students gifted in creativity, leadership, and visual and performing arts. Robert Sternberg’s research on talent development education shows that students may learn and develop “gifted” talents based on their interaction with their environments and teachings. Standardized testing focuses solely on developing a child’s short-term memory and traditional academia. Not to mention that standardized testing is incredibly biased towards schools of middle and upper class schools with the money and resources available to teach test oriented class material. Even more unfortunate is that the schools found in poorer areas are most commonly the school primarily attended by African American students or students who speak English as a second language. While NCLB doesn’t advocate specifically reducing funding to schools “In need of improvement”, it does little to address the problem of a lack of funding to these poorer districts that will only continually perform worse and worse each progressive year until something else is done to help these under funded schools besides administering a warning or curriculum ultimatum.

  20. I am so sick of hearing people say stuff along the lines of "The South seceeded from the Union because the North wasn't respecting thier states rights and was taking advantage of them econimically" or "The Civil War wasn't about slavery!"

The Civil War was all about slavery. The Confederate constitution included slavery articles. Secession Documents cited a threat to slavery as a reason for splitting off.

Sorry, this stuff just pisses me off. I am sick of reading treatises from some idiot who trys to play the "The MAN was putting us down!" card.

So I was scrolling along a random thread, reading, and suddenly, a fucking pop-up shows up. The thing with this one is, it was also for the Grudge 2, not sure if any of you have seen it. It's kind of like a shock website in some way because it just suddenly pops-up out of nowhere. My initial reaction, however, to seeing the ad, led me to punch my monitor. What hurts me the most is that you all seem like nice people, when you're not acting the way, well...people act. There is so much hatred of people who are simply wired differently from others. I really can't understand it. People allude to it and I guess that's fine, but it still hurts just the same.

Even though I'm not really "coming out" I still feel a little bit better being able to admit it on this forum, in some small way.
