you know, i got in touch with a great old friend/co-worker I haven't seen much since our company closed a few years ago. he moved somewhere an hour away, we're always busy, etc. but we reestablished contact and finally both found a time when it looked like we could just hang out like the old days, something that would do us both a lot of good at this point. and he tells me "come on up, I'm supposed to go see Project X and you're welcome to come with" and I said "nah I'm busy this week, I'll try to catch you some other time"

    Brutal Doom version 18a

This runs * looks great on Skulltag for me (even when toning down the visuals for performance), but when using my controller on Skulltag I always run & +speed slows me down, instead of the right way around. I just got the latest version of GZDoom which controls just fine, but my notebook igp can't handle the Brutal Doom flare effects. all the health pickups & barrels flicker when I move around. maybe it will all work out for me one of these days...

maybe we should see if romero will issue a declaration of indiependence. then anyone who thinks Doom isn't an indie game can have a revolutionary deathmatch vs. his people. that will settle it once and for all.

Is this innovative? or 30,000 variations on the exit room of E1M1? it's a philosophical kind of thing. how much Doom can you take out of Doom before it isn't? yet afterwards, what have you remaining but Doom?

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

I wonder about that engine.. was it something the "sound dork" previously created that id decided to license, or did id hire him to come in and build something while allowing him to retain the rights? either way, you're right. I guess anybody using licensed software to build a game is just purchasing goods & services, same as when they bought their computers and the other things Maes went on about which probably have their own end user license (although in the US the validity of those changes depending on the lunar phase). raw materials & tools - you need them to do anything. i hate the pseudo-intellectual title of "indie" as well. I keep putting it inside quotation marks. Apparently this expresses my reluctance to count it as a real word, or something. on the subject of the large studios like EA, and where to draw the line... I don't know if there is an answer, but if I was a studio head trying to distance myself from any perceived "indie" roots, I might start by executing 30 or 40 hostile takeovers.

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

that isn't true at all, though. Don't try to tell me Valve Corporation invented Havok physics. and the Steam release was simultaneous with the disc releases, like the one I have on my desk. the Vivendi/Sierra and ATI logos are not just decoration. It doesn't matter if the developer is larger than the publisher(s) & other partners or vice versa: they license technology and work with publishers because they lack the ability to do everything independently in a cost-effective manner. but if you check out this baby: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/524287-doom/images/box-28413 there's only one bull in that rodeo.

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

Doom was built, published, and initially sold all by id Software, right? not financed by or using licensed tech from another company or chopped up, edited & rushed out the door to meet the publisher's demands. I don't know how much more "indie" you can get. they worked with softdisk and apogee previously, then they were able to release Doom independently. \

I don't usually check spoilers, but is the secret exit on map15 or somewhere else? i'm reminded of a text parser game, "69105 Keys" After a series of adventures too mind-boggling to put into words, you finally arrive at the antechamber to the Count's treasure vault! Oh my, oh me... VAULT ANTECHAMBER Wowzers. The Count opted for simplicity and vague elegance in his treasure vault antechamber, choosing to dress the walls, floor, and ceiling alike in money-green marble tiles delicately flecked with gold. Apart from yourself and the stupendously locked vault door to the south, there's nothing here. Except for... THE KEYS. >examine door The heavy vault door is closed and locked. Very locked. Your keen adventurer eyes espy the following inscription: "One of these keys is not like the others. One of these keys just isn't the same. That one unique key unlocks my vault. Perhaps it would help if you tried my name. -- Count Keys" >count keys You see 69,105 keys here. >shit! That's not a verb I recognize.

    Brutal Doom version 18a

Smart autoaim - monsters only could be kind of a workaround for that. I was just playing Skulltag Brutal Doom without freelook & that option set; didn't have any trouble firing over the piles of corpses and squished bits. I was just running around E1M1 and Map01 though.

    Brutal Doom version 18a

I downloaded 15a from the Skulltag link on the first post, but it does not come with the Readme text, only changelogs & the pk3. is that available? downloading an old version to get it would take me a long time..
