    30,000 Levels

you know, i got in touch with a great old friend/co-worker I haven't seen much since our company closed a few years ago. he moved somewhere an hour away, we're always busy, etc. but we reestablished contact and finally both found a time when it looked like we could just hang out like the old days, something that would do us both a lot of good at this point. and he tells me "come on up, I'm supposed to go see Project X and you're welcome to come with" and I said "nah I'm busy this week, I'll try to catch you some other time"

    Brutal Doom version 18a

This runs * looks great on Skulltag for me (even when toning down the visuals for performance), but when using my controller on Skulltag I always run & +speed slows me down, instead of the right way around. I just got the latest version of GZDoom which controls just fine, but my notebook igp can't handle the Brutal Doom flare effects. all the health pickups & barrels flicker when I move around. maybe it will all work out for me one of these days...

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

maybe we should see if romero will issue a declaration of indiependence. then anyone who thinks Doom isn't an indie game can have a revolutionary deathmatch vs. his people. that will settle it once and for all.

Is this innovative? or 30,000 variations on the exit room of E1M1? it's a philosophical kind of thing. how much Doom can you take out of Doom before it isn't? yet afterwards, what have you remaining but Doom?

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

I wonder about that engine.. was it something the "sound dork" previously created that id decided to license, or did id hire him to come in and build something while allowing him to retain the rights? either way, you're right. I guess anybody using licensed software to build a game is just purchasing goods & services, same as when they bought their computers and the other things Maes went on about which probably have their own end user license (although in the US the validity of those changes depending on the lunar phase). raw materials & tools - you need them to do anything. i hate the pseudo-intellectual title of "indie" as well. I keep putting it inside quotation marks. Apparently this expresses my reluctance to count it as a real word, or something. on the subject of the large studios like EA, and where to draw the line... I don't know if there is an answer, but if I was a studio head trying to distance myself from any perceived "indie" roots, I might start by executing 30 or 40 hostile takeovers.

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

that isn't true at all, though. Don't try to tell me Valve Corporation invented Havok physics. and the Steam release was simultaneous with the disc releases, like the one I have on my desk. the Vivendi/Sierra and ATI logos are not just decoration. It doesn't matter if the developer is larger than the publisher(s) & other partners or vice versa: they license technology and work with publishers because they lack the ability to do everything independently in a cost-effective manner. but if you check out this baby: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/524287-doom/images/box-28413 there's only one bull in that rodeo.

I've just realized that Doom 1 was an indie game

Doom was built, published, and initially sold all by id Software, right? not financed by or using licensed tech from another company or chopped up, edited & rushed out the door to meet the publisher's demands. I don't know how much more "indie" you can get. they worked with softdisk and apogee previously, then they were able to release Doom independently. \

    30,000 Levels

I don't usually check spoilers, but is the secret exit on map15 or somewhere else? i'm reminded of a text parser game, "69105 Keys" After a series of adventures too mind-boggling to put into words, you finally arrive at the antechamber to the Count's treasure vault! Oh my, oh me... VAULT ANTECHAMBER Wowzers. The Count opted for simplicity and vague elegance in his treasure vault antechamber, choosing to dress the walls, floor, and ceiling alike in money-green marble tiles delicately flecked with gold. Apart from yourself and the stupendously locked vault door to the south, there's nothing here. Except for... THE KEYS. >examine door The heavy vault door is closed and locked. Very locked. Your keen adventurer eyes espy the following inscription: "One of these keys is not like the others. One of these keys just isn't the same. That one unique key unlocks my vault. Perhaps it would help if you tried my name. -- Count Keys" >count keys You see 69,105 keys here. >shit! That's not a verb I recognize.

    Brutal Doom version 18a

Smart autoaim - monsters only could be kind of a workaround for that. I was just playing Skulltag Brutal Doom without freelook & that option set; didn't have any trouble firing over the piles of corpses and squished bits. I was just running around E1M1 and Map01 though.

    Brutal Doom version 18a

I downloaded 15a from the Skulltag link on the first post, but it does not come with the Readme text, only changelogs & the pk3. is that available? downloading an old version to get it would take me a long time..

    doomwiki has a virus?

@Nitro hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Doom Wiki didn't have any "viruses" or malicious scripts that could infect visitors. if you just visited the wiki from your bookmarks or typed in doomwiki.org to get there, you couldn't have been affected. I don't know the precise functions of all the code Quasar found hidden in the .htaccess (I never made or ran a website & I took like 1 web design class during my 5 year long assosciates degree education), but it seems that people who were referred to doomwiki from various sources (wordpress, twitter, flickr, linkedin, google, yahoo, bing are listed there at the top) were getting sent to a different site under certain circumstances, where the malware attacks could begin.

    .

Probably not a very high amount of hours.. but I feel like 1 hour of Doom = at least 4 hours of most other games I play. It's the sheer speed & the lack of built-in breaks. combat heavy levels without a lot of exploration & tricks are not far from being a bullet hell shoot em up.

    Super Shotgun Dilemma

again, science gives us the explanation: the Periodic Table of Femininity. different females have different properties related to how far they are from the Period. additionally, each of them displays varying rates of psychobitchive decay: as time passes, they gradually but inevitably approach psychobitchivity. It may take dozens of years in some exceptionally stable cases, and the process can sometimes be temporarily retarded or reversed with certain chemical elements, minerals, or other substances (such as chocolate, gold, diamonds, and chlorpromazine) but the laws of nature will not be denied.

boom! the old linebreak zerg trick. anyway, speaking of google exploits, I read yesterday they were handing out $20-60k prizes for anyone who can mess with Chrome. I thought that could have backfired somehow... getting attention from the wrong people, etc

    doomwiki has a virus?

well this is just really confusing. if there's fake links, they're really good. if i google doomwiki.org, the top link is to doomwiki.org, but that link sets off alarms. more experimenting: it does this exactly once, then it keeps bringing me to doomwiki. but i restart my browser (clears all my cookies & cache) and it happens again. I've got hella slow internet, so I took time to read the messages in the status bar. instead of "sending request to doomwiki.org" it redirects to "sending request to ####.kingoftheaquarium.com", thats 4 varying numbers up front. stopped loading before I received enough data to set off my antivirus. I close the tab and open the same link again, it takes me to Doomwiki. so I'm still thinking it could be the htaccess thing.

    doomwiki has a virus?

well I saw it happen twice, & neither of them was the home page link. one of those pop.- links did it to me (I specifically tried it because it looked suspicious), but if I type the URL into my browser it loads the wiki page. I dunno what that prefix is all about. I avoided the crummy wikia site as well. EDIT: ok my pop link didn't end with .info, now that smells like a fake. but typing pop.doomwiki.org in a browser just drops the pop & loads the home page for me. anyway I sent a PM to Quasar earlier. not that I know anyone here but the wiki said he's a maintainer of the server =) he's probably sleeping like normal people though, so if somebody's in direct contact with an admin.... and I guess we can stop testing links to see if we get infected or not. enough lemmings have taken that dive to confirm the rocks down there are nasty.

    doomwiki has a virus?

could this be due to a compromised .htaccess file at the doomwiki? Thats probably the leading cause of traffic inbound from a search engine being redirected to some circle of hell... but web design & security is mostly voodoo to me, I just work on PCs.

    doomwiki has a virus?

I clicked a couple google links to the wiki earlier when the thread was new & didn't have any problems.. just tried it again and got the same malicious redirect as you from 2 different ones, shut down by my browser & antivirus (though i'm gonna do some scans & monitor my processes/network activity closely) but afterwards the links worked properly. edit: I was in a hurry to sever my connection & make double sure my comp is clean. posted about things I should probably research first.

    Super Shotgun Dilemma

that's similar to my explanation.. the UAC probably gets their weird shotguns wherever the Black Mesa security team & Marines from Half-Life get those quantum mechanical shotguns that shoot 2 rounds at a time in one chamber. Obviously a normal shotgun has either 1 shell or 0 shells in the chamber, but a quantum shotgun chamber can simultaneously contain any quantum superposition of the total magazine capacity (8). but the triple blast dislocated everybody's arm so they just use 2. as far as I can tell by watching Through The Wormhole w/ Morgan Freeman (Gordon's great uncle), quantum physics is generally equivalent to wizards doing stuff.
